Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although modern English and Irish poetry arises from the different cultures of the two countries these poets have shared - throughout this century - the same editors and publishers, competed for the same prizes, and been judged, ostensibly, by the same standards. This book examines contexts for these exchanges over four decades - tracing the lineages of Yeats and Hardy from their meeting in 1912 through WWI, the 30s, the 60s, and the 90s, - to see what influences and ideas are exchanged and how poetic value accrues.

Book The Irish Revolution 1912 23

Download or read book The Irish Revolution 1912 23 written by Pat McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on an impressive array of sources, author Pat McCarthy has produced the first comprehensive history of County Waterford during the turbulent and extraordinary years of the Irish Revolution. He reveals what life was like for the ordinary men, women, and children of city and county during a period that witnessed world war and domestic political and social strife. As the home constituency of John Redmond, leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, Waterford city shared in his apparent triumph between 1912 and 1914 when he was on the cusp of achieving home rule. The city faithfully supported his wartime policies and benefited from the consequent economic boom. On Redmond's death, that loyalty was transferred to his son amid bitter political violence. After the general election of 1918, Captain William Redmond described his Waterford city constituency, the only one outside Ulster to return an Irish Party MP, as 'an oasis in the political desert that is Ireland.' Waterford city's allegiance to the Redmonds, its support for the British war effort, and a strong labor movement combined to make the city a social and political battleground. By contrast, County Waterford reflected the nationwide trend and was swept along by the rising Sinn Fein tide. It also participated actively in the War of Independence. In 1922 and 1923, both city and county were convulsed by the Civil War and bitter labor disputes. This wide-ranging study offers fascinating new perspectives on Waterford during the Irish Revolution. Book Friends in High Places

Download or read book Friends in High Places written by Alan F. Parkinson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the centenary of perhaps the most significant event in Ulster during these two years 'the signing of Ulster's Solemn League and Covenant ' Friends in High Places: Ulster's resistance to Irish Home Rule, 1912-14 tells the story of Ulster's organised resistance to the Third Home Rule Bill, and in particular assesses the nature and degree of success of unionists' political and propaganda campaigns. The island of Ireland was on the cusp of Home Rule towards the end of the Edwardian period. Only the determined opposition of Ulster unionists and their allies in Great Britain prevented this from occurring. Loyalists exhibited genuine feelings of besiegement and isolation between1912 and 1914 and many observers believed Ireland was, by the summer of 1914, on the verge of civil war. The central focus of Friends in High Places is the vital interdependence of Ulster unionists and the British establishment during the late Edwardian period. It analyses the true nature of this relationship and also examines the significance of key events during these crucial years of Ulster's resistance to Irish Home Rule. This book is a must-read for those with an interest in this pivotal period of early twentieth-century Irish political history.
