Book Relational Aggression Among Middle School Girls

Download or read book Relational Aggression Among Middle School Girls written by Tracy Lynne Turner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying behavior among youths has been a long-standing problem that parents and educators spend a great deal of time trying to combat. In particular, relational aggression, due to its covert nature and the difficulty in identifying the behavior, presents a greater challenge to youths, parents and educators and warranted further investigation. This covert behavior appears to peak in middle school and is employed at a higher rate by girls. Thus, a qualitative approach was used to examine the experiences and perceptions of relational aggression of middle school girls, their parents and middle school educators. Three separate focus groups were conducted with girls, parents and educators and data was analyzed through a social ecological lens. This study also aimed to examine the responses of the participants and the perception girls hold regarding how their parents and teachers respond to reports of relational aggression. Results indicate that boys are engaging in this behavior more than previously observed and youths are exhibiting aggressive behaviors towards their peers via technological devices and social networking sites more so than in person. Additionally, results indicated that training for both parents and educators on how to identify these behaviors, as well as how to respond to them, is needed. Further, results indicated a disconnect in the communication among girls, parents and educators which the participants report exacerbates the problem of relational aggression in schools.

Book No More Mean Girls

Download or read book No More Mean Girls written by Katie Hurley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Queen Bees and Wannabes for the elementary and middle school set, child and adolescent psychotherapist Katie Hurley shows parents of young girls how to nip mean girl behavior in the bud. Once upon a time, mean girls primarily existed in high school, while elementary school-aged girls spent hours at play and enjoyed friendships without much drama. But in this fast-paced world in which young girls are exposed to negative behaviors on TV and social media from the moment they enter school, they are also becoming caught up in social hierarchies much earlier. No More Mean Girls is a guide for parents to help their young daughters navigate tricky territories such as friendship building, creating an authentic self, standing up for themselves and others, and expressing themselves in a healthy way. The need to be liked by others certainly isn't new, but this generation of girls is growing up in an age when the "like" button shows the world just how well-liked they are. When girls acknowledge that they possess positive traits that make them interesting, strong, and likeable, however, the focus shifts and their self-confidence soars; "likes" lose their importance. This book offers actionable steps to help parents empower young girls to be kind, confident leaders who work together and build each other up.

Book Middle School Girls Relational Aggression

Download or read book Middle School Girls Relational Aggression written by Lauren Perrish Plant and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teachers in this action research study examined the problem of relational aggression at Whirlwind Academy. Relational aggression can be defined as the purposeful manipulation of peer relationships with the intent to cause harm. Associated behaviors may include social exclusion, gossip, clique-forming, and cyber bullying. The nine teachers analyzed middle school girl behaviors to identify relational aggression, effective relational aggression intervention, and their own confidence to intervene. In addition to the teachers' collaboration, they met twice with a panel of seven middle school girls to better understand the students' first-hand experiences with the problem. This action research process enabled the teachers to self-reflect about their own experiences with relational aggression and how their personal histories influenced their practices as teachers. By the conclusion of the study, the teachers had changed their identification of relational aggression among their girls at Whirlwind and preventative interventions. They reported that they needed additional support by the school administration to feel confident enough to change their reactive interventions in a sustainable way. This action research process may be duplicated with other teachers or schools to facilitate site-specific relational aggression intervention training.

Book Relational Aggression Among Girls

Download or read book Relational Aggression Among Girls written by Katharine C. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying has become a topic of concern in schools because it can have such an impact on the overall school experience for a student. The purpose of the current research study was to determine the prevalence of a particular form of bullying, relational aggression, among middle school girls at a private school and the effects of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) on the behaviors and attitudes of these students. An explanatory mixed-methods approach was taken to collect both quantitative and qualitative data by the use of two separate surveys in two phases of the study. The Phase I survey, the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire (OBQ), was administered to all Grades 3-8 students on three occasions and quantitative data was compared from year to year. The Phase II survey, the Relational Bullying Survey for Girls, was given once shortly after the third OBQ, only to Grades 6-8 girls; qualitative data was collected. Results indicated that relational aggression was prevalent at the school site among middle school girls, with higher rates of prevalence in sixth grade. Exclusion and rumor spreading were found to be primary ways to bully others. Interventions by other students were more likely to happen as perceived by their peers since the initial implementation of the program. Many girls' attitudes and behaviors have changed about bullying despite some student criticism of the OBPP. The program seemed to have mixed effects, some negative and some positive. The qualitative data showed that some girls felt the program was not taken seriously and activities were not well suited to middle school. However, some responses stated that the program has increased the awareness of bullying and its effects on students and their school experience. It has also empowered students to stand up for themselves and others. For future reference, fidelity of implementation is essential to the success of a school-wide bullying program.

Book Relational Aggression

Download or read book Relational Aggression written by Tayla Branca and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A graduate student created and implemented a classroom guidance activity with middle school students on the topic of relational aggression. The purpose of this activity was to promote awareness on the prevalence of relational aggression and measure the sample student's participation in relationally aggressive behaviors. A twenty item pre and postsurvey on aggression was given to a sample of 75 students at a Western New York middle school. The sample included 41 females and 34 males, ranging in age from 12-14. The sample included students from Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, and Asian racial backgrounds. Also included is a review of the current literature on relationally aggressive behaviors, differences in boys and girls in respect to relational aggression, the importance of relationships, cliques and popularity, the impact of aggression, and rationale for school based awareness and intervention. The project demonstrated that most students reported relationally aggressive behaviors before the classroom guidance activity was presented. There was an approximate 7% decrease in relationally aggressive behaviors on 17 of the survey items. Three of the survey items showed a 6% increase in reported behavior after the guidance activity. The project demonstrated that relational aggression occurs among boys and girls, and that it occurs across different racial groups. It also demonstrated that relational aggression is an important issue among middle school students. Implications for school based awareness, prevention, and intervention are necessary to combat relational aggression are also presented.

Book Not All Sugar and Spice a Study of Adolescent Girls Aggression

Download or read book Not All Sugar and Spice a Study of Adolescent Girls Aggression written by Tracie L. Hogan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by the tragedies of youth gun violence, public awareness of bullying has grown in recent years. The national conversation on bullying, however, has concentrated its public awareness mostly on boys and their aggression. Defining aggression in the narrowest of terms limits the definition to focus solely on physical and direct acts of violence. The aggression of girls, often hidden, indirect, and nonphysical, goes unexplored based on this common definition. This action research study examined effects and frequency of social and relational aggression among adolescent girls. The participants for this study were middle school girls, Grades 6-8. The researcher established a counseling program for identifying at-risk adolescent girls' aggressive behaviors, while enhancing their protective factors that reduced aggressive tendencies.

Book Media Interaction on Relationally Aggressive Behaviors of Middle School Girls

Download or read book Media Interaction on Relationally Aggressive Behaviors of Middle School Girls written by Laura Rebecca Hammel and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a quantitative approach, this study investigates media interaction on relationally aggressive behaviors of middle-school girls by examining television consumption and an individual's proclivity to engage in relational aggression. It also investigates whether participation in a workshop explaining relational aggression assisted participants in recognizing the behavior and its consequences on aggressors and victims in the Disney Channel's Suite Life of Zach & Cody. Results indicate that the amount of television watched does not correlate with participation in the behavior generally, but that the use of sarcasm to hurt a friend decreases as television viewing increases. Results also indicate that knowledge about the behavior is associated with awareness of occurrences and consequences to the aggressor, but not with consequences to the victim. Together, these results should have implications for regulations regarding television violence and mediation of relational aggression.

Book Combatting Relational Aggression

Download or read book Combatting Relational Aggression written by Rachel Williams and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this project is to examine the realities of relational aggression among pre-adolescent and adolescent girls. Several facets of relational aggression will be explored including the current definition of relational aggression, the most common tactics used to enforce relational aggression, and profiles of bullies, victims, and bystanders. Additionally, this project dissects the possible ramifications of repeated exposure to or perpetuation of relational aggression. The project will then propose a yearlong curriculum aimed at combating relational aggression. The curriculum is an intervention as well as a prevention model that can be implemented for both upper elementary and middle school girls. The goal of the program is to work with girls in developing self-esteem, positive communication skills, and supportive relationship behaviors." -- Abstract, p. 1.

Book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents written by Mitchell J. Prinstein and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists, educators, and parents of teens have long recognized the potency of peer influences on children and youth, but until recently, questions of how and why adolescents emulate their peers were largely overlooked. This book presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the processes by which peers shape each other's attitudes and behavior, and explores implications for intervention and prevention. Leading authorities share compelling findings on such topics as how drug use, risky sexual behavior, and other deviant behaviors "catch on" among certain peer groups or cliques; the social, cognitive, developmental, and contextual factors that strengthen or weaken the power of peer influence; and the nature of positive peer influences and how to support them.

Book excerpt: The only book with a program that is proven to solve the problem of female bullying, a controversial issue first exposed in the bestselling Reviving Ophelia. Stop the Hurting Mary Pipher's bestselling Reviving Ophelia triggered widespread interest in the culture of preteen and teenage girls and the seeming epidemic of relational aggression (bullying) among them. Gossip, teasing, forming cliques, and other cruel behaviors are the basis of this bullying, which harms both victim and aggressor. Until now, no one has been able to offer practical and effective solutions that stop girls from hurting each other with words and actions. But in Girl Wars, two experts explain not only how to prevent such behavior but also how to intervene should it happen, as well as overcome the culture that breeds it. Illustrated by compelling true stories from mothers and girls, the authors offer effective, easy-to-implement strategies that range from preventive to prescriptive, such as how to -Adopt a "help, don't hurt" strategy -Provide positive role models -Teach communication skills online and off -Stress assertiveness, not aggressiveness -Learn conflict resolution skills -Identify alternatives to bullying behavior With their combined experience in offering and evaluating programs that combat bullying, the authors show that girls not only want to help rather than hurt each other, they can do so with guidance from concerned adults.

Book Middle School Girls Behavioral Responses to Ostracism

Download or read book Middle School Girls Behavioral Responses to Ostracism written by Ashley M. Leja and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying among school-aged children is problematic in the U.S., with 22% of students aged 12--18 years reporting experiences with bullying at school. Whereas early bullying research focused heavily on the physical bullying common among boys, more recent studies have included examinations of bullying using relational aggression. Defined as removing or threatening to remove relationships to cause harm to another, relational aggression includes behaviors such as spreading lies, gossiping, or ignoring a peer and has been found to be more common among girls. A specialized form of relational aggression that has been relatively under investigated among adolescents involves ostracism, the excluding or ignoring of others by individuals or groups.
