It has been estimated that transportation agencies across the US invest more than 5 billion dollars on concrete bridge repair and renovation annually. To meet the needs of transportation industry, high performance concrete (HPC) has been developed for the construction of bridges. However, the link between material properties and field performance is not completely established. Goodspeed et al. [1996] defined the performance of concrete using four material parameters that describe durability and four material parameters that describe mechanical properties. However, material properties alone cannot entirely define field performance. Rather some consideration is needed to quantify the conditions to which the concrete will be exposed. The exposure conditions vary based on the geographical location. This work relates material properties with the exposure conditions typical of those in the state of Indiana to estimate the performance of concrete bridge decks. The exposure conditions in the state of Indiana were assessed. Specifically, temperature, rainfall, wetting events, freeze thaw cycles, and relative humidity have been classified. To assess the variation in these parameters across the state, contour maps were developed using information from cities in the state of Indiana as well as cities in surrounding states. The eight parameters suggested by Goodspeed et al. [1996] were reviewed. Three key distresses behavior (chloride ingress, freezing and thawing, and shrinkage cracking) have been investigated in depth. Relationships have been developed to relate measured material properties (from the results of AASHTO/ASTM tests) with the predicted performance of the concrete structure under different exposure condition. First, a model is presented that relates the results of Rapid Chloride Permeability Test (RCPT) with the anticipated service life of bridge deck against corrosion due to chloride ingress. Second, a model is presented that relates results of sorptivity, porosity, and critical saturation with the anticipated service life of concrete exposed to freezing and thawing. Third, a model is presented that relates the shrinkage of concrete with the potential for premature cracking. The results of each of the models have been presented for conditions that are typical of the state of Indiana.

Book excerpt: High costs and traffic disruption associated with the deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge decks because of corrosion have sparked renewed interest in service life design. Reinforced concrete bridge decks are exposed to chlorides from deicing salts; when the chlorides reach the steel reinforcement, they initiate corrosion. This study supports the adoption of the methodology described in fib Bulletin 34, Model Code for Service Life Design, for reinforced concrete bridge decks in Virginia. Concrete mixture properties and environmental exposure conditions were characterized. Values particular to regions within Virginia and suggested default values were identified and organized in a database to support the development of service life design guidelines. The predicted service life for eight bridge decks using low-cracking concrete and corrosion-resistant reinforcement (VDOT Reinforcement Class I, MMFX, ASTM 1035) was evaluated. The service life model was also implemented in a life-cycle cost analysis for a case study bridge, which found superior reliability of corrosion-resistant reinforcement from a life-cycle perspective. In addition to supporting the implementation of service life design, several investigations identified key assumptions and variables in the service life model and identified critical areas for future characterization. The partial differential equation for apparent chloride diffusion was solved with both an approximate analytical approach and a numerical approach. Delays in the application of deicing salt were investigated using the numerical approach, and a ramp-type function for surface chloride concentration was explored using the analytical approach. Aging coefficients based on curing were also considered. A sensitivity analysis identified the aging coefficient and the surface chloride concentration as the most critical variables. The study concluded that sufficient data are available to implement the fib Model Code for Service Life Design, but that caution in interpreting results is warranted because of the high uncertainty associated with the most critical variables. According to the results of the service life analyses, the regional climatic variability and differences in mix design across Virginia indicate that a "one-size-fits-all" approach to bridge deck specifications may not be appropriate. Book excerpt: This report summarizes a research project aimed at developing degradation models for bridge decks in the state of Michigan based on durability mechanics. A probabilistic framework to implement local-level mechanistic-based models for predicting the chloride-induced corrosion of the RC deck was developed. The methodology is a two-level strategy: a three-phase corrosion process was modeled at a local (unit cell) level to predict the time of surface cracking while a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) approach was implemented on a representative number of cells to predict global (bridge deck) level degradation by estimating cumulative damage of a complete deck. The predicted damage severity and extent over the deck domain was mapped to the structural condition rating scale prescribed by the National Bridge Inventory (NBI). The influence of multiple effects was investigated by implementing a carbonation induced corrosion deterministic model. By utilizing realistic and site-specific model inputs, the statistics-based framework is capable of estimating the service states of RC decks for comparison with field data at the project level. Predicted results showed that different surface cracking time can be identified by the local deterministic model due to the variation of material and environmental properties based on probability distributions. Bridges from different regions in Michigan were used to validate the prediction model and the results show a good match between observed and predicted bridge condition ratings. A parametric study was carried out to calibrate the influence of key material properties and environmental parameters on service life prediction and facilitate use of the model. A computer program with a user-friendly interface was developed for degradation modeling due to chloride induced corrosion.

Obviously, the definition of the terminal serviceability in terms of deterioration level also constitutes an important element of the model. This paper examines a semi-empirical deterioration model for predicting service life based on fundamental concepts, augmented with historical data.

There are more than six hundred thousand bridges on the highway system in the United States. Approximately one third of these bridges are in need of maintenance and will cost more than $120 billion to rehabilitate or repair. Several factors affect the performance of bridges over their life spans. Identifying these factors and accurately assessing the condition of bridges are critical in the development of an effective maintenance program. While there are several methods available for condition assessment, selecting the best technique remains a challenge. Therefore, developing an accurate and reliable model for concrete bridge deck deterioration is a key step towards improving the overall bridge condition assessment process. Consequently, the main goal of this dissertation is to develop an improved bridge deck deterioration prediction model that is based on the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) database. To achieve the goal, deterministic and stochastic approaches have been investigated to model the condition of bridge decks. While the literatures have typically proposed the Markov chain method as the best technique for the condition assessment of bridges, this dissertation reveals that some probability distribution functions, such as Lognormal and Weibull, could be better prediction models for concrete bridge decks under certain condition ratings. A new universal framework for optimizing the performance of prediction of concrete bridge deck condition was developed for this study. The framework is based on a nonlinear regression model that combines the Markov chain method with a state-specific probability distribution function. In this dissertation, it was observed that on average, bridge decks could stay much longer in their condition ratings than the typical 2-year inspection interval, suggesting that inspection schedules might be extended beyond 2 years for bridges in certain condition rating ranges. The results also showed that the best statistical model varied from one state to another and there was no universal statistical prediction model that can be developed for all states. The new framework was implemented on Michigan data and demonstrated that the prediction error in the combined model was less than each of the two models (i.e. Markov and Lognormal). The results also showed that average daily traffic, age, deck area, structure type, skew angle, and environmental factors have significant impact on the deterioration of concrete bridge decks. The contributions of the work presented in this dissertation include: 1) the identification of the significant factors that impact concrete bridge deck deterioration; 2) the development of a universal deterioration prediction framework that can be uniquely tailored for each state’s data; and 3) supporting the possibility of extending inspection schedules beyond the typical 2-year cycles. Future work may involve: 1) evaluating each of the factors that impact the deterioration rates in more depth by refining the investigation ranges; 2) investigating the possibility of revising the regular bridge deck inspection intervals beyond the 2-year cycles; and 3) developing deterioration prediction models for other bridge elements (i.e. superstructure and substructure) using the framework developed in this dissertation.

Chloride from applications of sodium, calcium, and magnesium chloride during winter maintenance operations initiates corrosion, which subsequently spalls the reinforcing steel cover concrete. Initial service life prediction models were diffusion based deterministic/empirical models, which significantly overestimate service lives. Probabilistic solutions provided more realistic estimates. However, chloride corrosion service life models for reinforced concrete elements have not been sufficiently validated against actual field performance. The objective of this study was to validate a probabilistic model using field survey data from ten bridge decks built in Virginia. Field surveys included damage assessments as the sum of spalls, delaminations, and patches. Damage surveys were conducted initially and 3 years later. Chloride content and clear concrete cover depth surveys were conducted to establish cover depth, surface chloride concentration, and chloride diffusion constant global variations. Validation comparisons were performed considering the ten decks as representative of a construction era and as individual decks. Results demonstrated that the probabilistic model accurately predicts global performance but not individual deck performance. Damage predictions of individual decks were greater than and less than the field assessed condition. Differences ranged from an overestimate of 64 years to an underestimate of 11 years. Underestimates averaged 14 years and overestimates averaged 43 years. The large overestimates of 44, 62, and 64 years occurred for estimated service lives of 80-100 years. Insufficient number of model input parameters of surface chloride and particularly the diffusion constant is the plausible reason for the lack of prediction accuracies for the individual decks.

Book excerpt: When considering the durability of a bridge, the concrete deck is often the most vulnerable component and can be the limiting factor affecting service life. To enhance the durability of both new and existing bridge decks, a protective system is often provided to prevent or delay the ingress of chlorides and moisture to the reinforcing steel. In the state of Indiana, this protective system typically comes in the form of a concrete overlay or a thin polymer overlay. Another protective system widely used in the United States and in many countries internationally consists of a waterproofing membrane overlaid with asphaltic concrete. Due to a history of poor performance in the 1970's and the 1980's, a moratorium has been placed on the installation of waterproofing membranes in Indiana. This study reevaluates the state-of-the-practice of bridge deck protection in Indiana with the goal of enhancing the Indiana Department of Transportation's toolbox of bridge deck protective systems. Consideration was given to the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice in bridge deck protective systems used by other state transportation agencies as well as by international transportation agencies. Research focused on the practice of installing waterproofing membranes and the latest technologies being used. Based on the information gathered, various protective systems were evaluated, and recommendations are provided on the selection of the most appropriate systems for various bridge conditions. Furthermore, a recommendation is provided to remove the moratorium on membrane systems so that the benefits of this system can be more fully explored and realized.
