Una de las principales razones para esta confusión es su manejo de la palabra “pacto”, que es tan fundamental en la Biblia. Las dos preguntas clave son: ¿cuántos pactos ha hecho Dios con los seres humanos? y ¿cuántos de estos se aplican a los cristianos hoy? Hay quienes dicen que hay un solo pacto (“el pacto de gracia”) que recorre toda la Biblia, aunque podrían agregar un segundo pacto (“un pacto de obras”) que se aplicó solo a Adán en el Edén. La mayoría piensa que hay dos (el “antiguo” y el “nuevo”), que corresponden al Antiguo y al Nuevo “Testamento” (un sinónimo de “pacto”). Otros afirman haber encontrado siete (aunque suelen llamarlos “dispensaciones”). Este autor cree que hay cinco que son básicos para la historia de nuestra redención: noético, abrahámico, mosaico, davídico y mesiánico. Solo uno de estos es “antiguo” y, por lo tanto, obsoleto; solo uno es “nuevo”, pero respalda los otros tres. En el texto se relatan desde los enormes privilegios que goza la Iglesia actual hasta su enfrentamiento a todo planteamiento que significara un avance o renovación ideológica de la sociedad española. Posiblemente este trabajo escandalizará a algunos y, sin embargo, a otros les parecerá que nos hemos quedado cortos. El asunto tiene su lógica, ya que lo contrario sería creer que la actual sociedad española pasa de todo. Pero está demostrado que no es así.

Book excerpt: "Historians have long looked to networks of elite liberal and anti-clerical men as the driving forces in Mexican history over the course of the long nineteenth century. This traditional view, writes Margaret Chowning, cannot account for the continued power of the Catholic Church in Mexico, which has withstood extensive and sustained political opposition for over a century. How, then, must the scholarly consensus change to better reflect Mexico's history? In this book, Chowning shows that the church repeatedly emerged as a political player, even when liberals won elections, primarily because of the overlooked importance of women in politics. Catholic women kept the church alive through the wars of independence and made it into the political force it continues to be in present-day Mexico. Using archival sources from ten Mexican states, the book shows how women, who were denied the vote and expected to stay out of the political sphere, nevertheless forged their own form of citizenship through the church. After Mexico gained its independence in 1821, women self-consciously developed new lay associations and assumed leadership roles within them. These new associations not only kept Catholicism vibrant, they also pushed women into public sphere. Methodologically, this book shows the value of exploring gender in political and religious history and reveals the equal importance of informal political power to more formal activities like voting"--
