Book The Cobra Movement in Postwar Europe

Download or read book The Cobra Movement in Postwar Europe written by Karen Kurczynski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the art of Cobra, a network of poets and artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam (1948–1951). Although the name stood for the organizers’ home cities, the Cobra artists hailed from countries in Europe, Africa, and the United States. This book investigates how a group of struggling young artists attempted to reinvent the international avant-garde after the devastation of the Second World War, to create artistic experiments capable of facing the challenges of postwar society. It explores how Cobra’s experimental, often collective art works and publications relate to broader debates in Europe about the use of images to commemorate violent events, the possibility of free expression in an art world constrained by Cold War politics, the breakdown of primitivism in an era of colonial independence movements, and the importance of spontaneity in a society increasingly dominated by the mass media. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, 20th-century modern art, avant-garde arts, and European history.

Book Welded Sculpture of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Welded Sculpture of the Twentieth Century written by Judy Collischan and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 2000 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welded sculpture evolved as an art-form in the 1930s as artists began to adapt an industrial method for aesthetic purposes. This historical survey explores the plentiful and varied approaches to sculpture possible through welding and its companion processes. Many twentieth-century artists have produced a prestigious body of welded sculpture, often contributing to the development of this method by experimentation. With its strong European artistic roots, welded sculpture has transcended several 'isms' and trends, by-passing ephemeral styles and marketing mechanisms. This book presents a detailed examination of a technique, its artist exponents, and its associated social and political milieux over the last three quarters of the twentieth century. It records and comments on the history of welded art as it has occurred in our time, contributing to and expanding artistic parameters.Artists featured in this book include Pablo Picasso, László Moholy-Nagy, Harry Bertoia, Phillip King, Anthony Caro, Lynn Chadwick and Eduardo Paolozzi, to name but a few.
