Book Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism

Download or read book Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism written by Raymond Dils and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism is a compilation of papers presented during the 11th Meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in Copenhagen in 1977. The book deals with the regulation of enzyme activity and the turnover that results from fatty acid metabolism, lipid metabolism in membranes, and disturbed fatty acid metabolism. One study presented in the book shows that cellular fatty acid synthetase levels are significantly decreased by different medium and long chain fatty acids in Candida lypolytica, a kind of yeast. The book also examines the serious incidence of increase in the rate of conversion of glucose to fatty acids when white adipose tissues from rats are exposed to insulin. The selection addresses this increase as an important example of acute hormonal regulation of fatty acid synthesis in mammalian tissues. The text also describes the enzyme adaptation to nutritional and hormonal changes and the role of lipids in membrane fusion. The book presents other studies regarding the incidence of vascular, dietary, and congenital factors on fatty acid metabolism in adipose tissue and liver that are conducted in rats. Another study suggests that hyperinsulinemia is a key factor in the development of the obesity syndrome. Microbiologists, microchemists, and laboratory researchers and scientists dealing with fat metabolism will appreciate this book.

Download or read book Plant Lipid Metabolism written by J.C. Kader and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of papers that comprehensively describe the major areas of research on lipid metabolism of plants. State-of-the-art knowledge about research on fatty acid and glycerolipid biosynthesis, isoprenoid metabolism, membrane structure and organization, lipid oxidation and degradation, lipids as intracellular and extracellular messengers, lipids and environment, oil seeds and gene technology is reviewed. The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellular and molecular biology, as well as molecular genetics, have been recently used to characterize several key enzymes of plant lipid metabolism (in particular, desaturases, thioesterases, fatty acid synthetase) and to isolate corresponding cDNAs and genomic clones, allowing the use of genetic engineering methods to modify the composition of membranes or storage lipids. These findings open fascinating perspectives, both for establishing the roles of lipids in membrane function and intracellular signalling and for adapting the composition of seed oil to the industrial needs. This book will be a good reference source for research scientists, advanced students and industrialists wishing to follow the considerable progress made in recent years on plant lipid metabolism and to envision the new opportunities offered by genetic engineering for the development of novel oil seeds.

Book excerpt: Lipid Metabolism focuses on the regulation and metabolism of lipids. This book is composed of 10 chapters that specifically deal with fatty acids, prostaglandins, glycerides, glycerophosphates, cholesterol, isoprenoids, and aromatic compounds. This text starts with an overview of fatty acid metabolism and its controlling factors. This topic is followed by discussions on the physiochemical aspects of oxidative metabolism of fatty acids, with a special emphasis on the role of carnitine in this process. A chapter highlights the several important aspects of higher plant lipid metabolism. Other chapters are devoted to the structures, biosynthesis, and metabolism of prostaglandins, bacterial lipids, phospholipids, glycerides, and steroids. The final chapters describe the biogenesis of aromatic substances through the polyketide path, including polyisoprenoid quinines and related compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metabolic Regulation looks in detail at how molecules, cells and tissues operate collectively in human health and disease, using an approach that has become known as ‘integrative physiology’. Since the publication of the first edition of this extremely well received book, the understanding of how metabolism is regulated has developed substantially in several ways, for example with the discovery of the hormone leptin, and also in the continuing advances in the understanding of gene expression. Full details of these and other new advances are included in this fully updated edition. Carefully laid out with relevant and clearly explained examples, and containing much new material, this new edition covers in an integrated way: concepts and mechanisms, digestion and intestinal absorption, organs and tissues, endocrine organs and hormones, the integration of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, the nervous system and metabolism, lipoprotein metabolism, diabetes mellitus, energy balance and body weight regulation and how the body copes with some extreme situations. The author, Keith Frayn, who has many years’ experience teaching and researching in this subject, has written a book of great clarity, which is an extremely valuable tool for scientists, practitioners and students working and studying across a broad range of allied health sciences including nutrition, dietetics, sports science and nursing. Students of medicine, physiology, biochemistry and biological sciences will also find much of great use and interest in this book. All libraries in research establishments, universities and medical schools where these subjects are studied and taught should have multiple copies of this excellent book on their shelves. Keith Frayn is Professor of Human Metabolism at the University of Oxford, UK.Reviews of the First Edition ‘This is an excellent textbook’: Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism ‘The coverage is excellent for students following courses such as nutrition and human biology’:Biologist ‘This book is ideal for medical students’:Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
