Book Regular and Random Copolymer Adsorption at Solid liquid Interfaces

Download or read book Regular and Random Copolymer Adsorption at Solid liquid Interfaces written by Edward Hovsep Maraachlian and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis the adsorption of copolymers at liquid interfaces is studied. General background on the subject is given. Then two different models, the continuum and lattice, are introduced. The two models are compared and the lattice model is chosen in order to do further calculations. The random and regular copolymers that we used were made up of two types of monomers type A and type B. Type B monomers are assumed not to interact with the wall and only the A-type monomers interact. The matrix method was used in order to calculate the critical energies and adsorption layer thickness. It was observed that the critical energies of random copolymers are less than the critical energies of regular copolymers of the same composition. The values of the critical energies were close to the one predicted by the mean energy model for large values of the fraction of A-type monomers.--The numerical results are compare to analytic predictions. The mean energy model was used to find the energy of attraction of the wall at which a homopolymer will be equivalent to a regular or random copolymer whose A-type monomers interact with the wall by energy EA. We compared our results to these predictions and determined the range applicability of this model. In general the agreement was good only for concentrations of A monomers greater than a certain value. Regular and random copolymers, in the region of strong adsorption, showed differences in the structure of the adsorbed layer.

Book Interfacial Phenomena and Colloid Stability

Download or read book Interfacial Phenomena and Colloid Stability written by Tharwat F. Tadros and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this volume is to demonstrate the importance of the fundamental aspects of interfacial phenomena in various industrial applications. The text provides the reader with the knowledge that is essential for the composition of the complex multi-phase systems used in the above mentioned areas of application. It should enable the physical and formulation chemist as well as the chemical engineer in designing the formulation on the basis of a rational approach. It will also enable the formulation scientist to better understanding the factors responsible for producing a stable product with optimum application conditions. The book should also be very useful for teaching the subject of formulation at academic institutions.

Book Block Copolymers

Download or read book Block Copolymers written by Nikos Hadjichristidis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-04-28 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers may be classified as either homopolymers, consisting of one single repeating unit, or copolymers, consisting of two or more distinct repeating units. Block copolymers contain long contiguous blocks of two or more repeating units in the same polymer chain. Covering one of the hottest topics in polymer chemistry, Block Copolymers provides a coherent overview of the synthetic routes, physical properties, and applications of block copolymers. This pioneering text provides not only a guideline for developing synthetic strategies for creating block copolymers with defined characteristics, but also a key to the relationship between the physical properties of block copolymers and the structure and dynamics of materials. Covering features of the chemistry and physics of block copolymers that are not found in comparable texts, Block Copolymers illustrates the structure-activity relationship of block copolymers and offers suggestions for the design of specific applications. Divided into five sections-Block Copolymers includes chapters on: * Block Copolymers by Chemical Modification of Precursor Polymers * Nonlinear Block Copolymers * Adsorption of Block Copolymers at Solid-Liquid Interfaces * Theory of Block Copolymer Segregation * Phase Transformation Kinetics * Block Copolymer Morphology * Block Copolymer Dynamics Polymer chemists, physicists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists, as well as graduate students in polymer science, will find Block Copolymers to be an invaluable text.

Book Block Copolymers in Solution

Download or read book Block Copolymers in Solution written by Ian W. Hamley and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-12-13 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text discusses the solution self-assembly of block copolymers and covers all aspects from basic physical chemistry to applications in soft nanotechnology. Recent advances have enabled the preparation of new materials with novel self-assembling structures, functionality and responsiveness and there have also been concomitant advances in theory and modelling. The present text covers the principles of self-assembly in both dilute and concentrated solution, for example micellization and mesophase formation, etc., in chapters 2 and 3 respectively. Chapter 4 covers polyelectrolyte block copolymers - these materials are attracting significant attention from researchers and a solid basis for understanding their physical chemistry is emerging, and this is discussed. The next chapter discusses adsorption of block copolymers from solution at liquid and solid interfaces. The concluding chapter presents a discussion of selected applications, focussing on several important new concepts. The book is aimed at researchers in polymer science as well as industrial scientists involved in the polymer and coatings industries. It will also be of interest to scientists working in soft matter self-assembly and self-organizing polymers.

Book Homopolymer Adsorption at Solid liquid Interfaces

Download or read book Homopolymer Adsorption at Solid liquid Interfaces written by Jessy Simon Haddad and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the interfacial organization of polymers with excluded volume inte ractions near solid surfaces is an issue of fundamental interest that is relevan t for many technological and biological applications. In this work, we address s everal questions pertaining to the adsorption- desorption phase behavior of a ho mopolymer chain interacting with a solid surface and to the adsorption- desorpti on point for finite and infinite chains. Our analysis is based on a self- consis tent field approximation using the lattice model. We employ different extrapolation methods to alleviate diffic ulties, which arise when considering very long chains, and eventually discuss th e results for infinite chains. One of our interesting findings is that homopolymers may undergo an adsorption- desorption transition in the vicinity of the surface of the second order contrar y to some other predictions. Finally we discuss the dependence of the critical p oint on the quality of the solvent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
