Book Education and the State in Modern Peru

Download or read book Education and the State in Modern Peru written by G. Espinoza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Espinoza's work illuminates how education was the site of ideological and political struggle in Peru during its early years as an independent state. Spanning 100 years and discussing both urban and rural education, it shows how school funding, curricula, and governance became part of the cultural process of state-building in Peru.

Book Mathematics Teacher Education in the Andean Region and Paraguay

Download or read book Mathematics Teacher Education in the Andean Region and Paraguay written by Yuriko Yamamoto Baldin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book is an excellent synthesis of the initial and continuing preparation for Mathematics Teaching in Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru, from which comparative analyses can be made that show similarities and differences, and highlight various perspectives. In February 2016, the 5th Capacity and Networking Project (CANP) workshop of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was held in Lima, Peru. The coordination of this two-week workshop was undertaken by an international scientific committee (IPC), with equal participation by mathematicians and mathematics educators from the region and from the international ICMI and IMU community. The goal of CANP5 was to improve the quality of mathematics education in the region, which led to the main theme of the scientific program “Initial and Continued Teacher Education”. Country Reports on the main theme of teacher education systems for each country in this region were presented and discussed to detect common issues that might be improved through a collaborative network. One of the most important results of this event was the creation of a Mathematics Education Network, namely the Comunidad de Educación Matemática de America del Sur – CEMAS. This book brings to the international Educational Community an important collection of experiences and ideas in the Mathematics Education of four Latin-American countries in the developing Andean region and Paraguay. The dissemination of these results can promote the search for international collaborative actions in a wider scale.

Book Archaeological Heritage in a Modern Urban Landscape

Download or read book Archaeological Heritage in a Modern Urban Landscape written by Jorge Gamboa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological Heritage in a Modern Urban Landscape evaluates issues about the preservation, social role and management of archaeological sites in the Trujillo area, north coast of Peru, specifically those of the Moche culture (100-800 AD). Moche was one of the great civilizations of ancient Peru, with spectacular ceremonial adobe architecture and settlements distributed across a landscape formed by coastal valleys and one of the largest deserts of South America. In the last decades political and economic changes have brought rural migrations to the city of Trujillo and nearby zones, causing the emergence of extensive new communities in the margins of the metropolis. And although Trujillo’s Moche heritage has become a symbol of regional identity, most local Moche sites are under siege because of urban development. This book offers a new perspective on the development of modern communities settled beside archaeological sites and contributes to improving best practices in the management of archaeological sites and preservation in an urban setting.

Book Biodegradation of Plastics

Download or read book Biodegradation of Plastics written by Zhanyong Wang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consumption of plastic products has increased significantly with the rapid development of the global economy. The total output of virgin plastics has already reached eight billion tons, and the annual global plastic consumption has reached 2.8 billion tons. In parallel with this high consumption rate, a staggering amount of plastic waste is generated annually. As a consequence of incorrect disposal of waste plastics and plastic longevity, this plastic waste is accumulating in the environment at an increasing rate. Moreover, since most plastic waste is corrosion resistant, these plastics do not decompose in the natural environment and can cause serious environmental pollution. In particular, petroleum-based synthetic polymers, including polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyurethanes need hundreds of years to completely degrade in the natural environment. Moreover, although some aliphatic polyesters, such as polybutylene succinate, polycaprolactone, and polylactic acid are considered biodegradable, degradation of these plastics occurs only under specific microorganism activity and under specific conditions. Sometimes the apparent degradation is initiated by hydrolytic activity and not microorganism or enzymatic activity. Large-scale synthesis and application of plastics only began after 1950. Hence, the time span of plastic exposure in the environment has been too short for the adaptive evolution of natural microorganisms. Indeed, natural microorganisms showing high specificity for plastics and a high degradation efficiency are extremely scarce. Because of the inability of most natural microorganisms to recognize and degrade plastics, enzymes that can specifically degrade plastics are also scarce. Many of the enzymes which are known have either an unclear mechanism of the action on the polymer, a poor affinity for their substrates, a low efficiency, or enzyme production yield is currently low. To address these problems, new biotechnology strategies need to be implemented. In particular, new microorganisms and their enzymes need to be identified, and pathways for plastic degradation and molecular modification need to be clarified to enhance the activity and stability of the degrading enzymes. The current Research Topic aims to cover the recent and novel research trends in the development of plastics biodegradation (including petroleum-based plastics and bio-based plastics) under soil, composted, microbial and enzymatic conditions. The recycling technology of degraded products is also of interest.
