Book Handbook of Downstream Processing

Download or read book Handbook of Downstream Processing written by E. Goldberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen a phenomenal growth of the field of genetic or biochemical engineering and have witnessed the development and ultimately marketing of a variety of products-typically through the manipulation and growth of different types of microorganisms, followed by the recovery and purification of the associated products. The engineers and biotechnologists who are involved in the full-scale process design of such facilities must be familiar with the variety of unit operations and equipment and the applicable regulatory requirements. This book describes current commercial practice and will be useful to those engineers working in this field in the design, construction and operation of pharmaceutical and biotechnology plants. It will be of help to the chemical or pharmaceutical engineer who is developing a plant design and who faces issues such as: Should the process be batch or continuous or a combination of batch and continuous? How should the optimum process design be developed? Should one employ a new revolutionary separation which could be potentially difficult to validate or use accepted technology which involves less risk? Should the process be run with ingredients formulated from water for injection, deionized water, or even filtered tap water? Should any of the separations be run in cold rooms or in glycol jacketed lines to minimize microbial growth where sterilization is not possible? Should the process equipment and lines be designed to be sterilized in-place, cleaned-in-place, or should every piece be broken down, cleaned and autoclaved after every turn?

    Book Details:
  • Author : John E. Moore
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2010-12-12

Download or read book Field Hydrogeology written by John E. Moore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the focus in groundwater studies has expanded to also include groundwater contamination and remediation studies as a part of resource evaluations. While there are other books on the subject, Field Hydrogeology-A Guide for Site Investigations and Report Preparation provides the first integrated presentation of the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) standards, US Geological Survey (USGS), and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) field techniques. It also includes access to a Web site that contains software for designing aquifer tests and aquifer-recharge experiments. Written by an author with more than 40 years of experience in hydrology and geology, this reference treats the subject from a field standpoint. Useful as a field guide and a textbook, it contains standard methods for planning and undertaking hydrogeologic investigations. It incorporates case studies, contains a glossary of field-hydrogeology technical terms, and provides a detailed list of ASTM standards and key hydrologic Web sites. The guide is based on ASTM standards, EPA, and US Department of Interior (DOI) field technical manuals. The text covers hydrogeologic fundamentals, conceptual models, planning an investigation, surface investigations, subsurface investigations, field inventory, stream flow measurements, water quality measurements, and report preparation. It includes more recent groundwater evaluation techniques such as tracing and isotope techniques. Field Hydrogeology will allow students and seasoned professionals to have a vast array of clearly written descriptive materials and an extensive source of references available at their fingertips. About the Author: John E. Moore, Ph.D., is a hydrogeologist at the USEPA Region 8 in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Moore is also an adjunct professor of hydrology at Metro State College in Denver and a consulting hydrologist. He has more than 40 years of experience in hydrogeology and geology as a researcher, teacher, and consultant. He is internationally recognized as an expert in these fields. Dr. Moore was deputy assistant chief hydrologist and field scientist with the USGS and served as a technical advisor to the USEPA and the U.S. House of Representatives. He is past president of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) and is the chairman of the IAH Education Commission.

Book excerpt: Lessons can be learnt from the past; from time to time it is useful for practitioners to look back over the historical developments of their science. Hydrogeology has developed from humble beginnings into the broad church of investigatory procedures which collectively form the modern-day hydrogeologist‘s tool box. Hydrogeology remains a branch of t

Book Women Water Professionals

Download or read book Women Water Professionals written by Sumi Krishna and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water management is not an engineering matter alone, it involves ecological, socio- political, administrative and legal concerns. Gender is a key factor but has been neglected both conventionally and in recent water reform policies and structures. Yet, a cross-section of South Asian women have challenged socio-cultural norms and crossed personal and professional boundaries to make a profound impact on water and sanitation management. Their inspiring stories have scarcely been documented. This book is the first to profile women from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – women at the grassroots or with NGOs, women activists, journalists, administrators, scientists, academics, action-researchers - who have faced challenges related to water with courage and determination. Complementing the 32 women’s voices is data compiled from an analysis of the situation of women water professionals in the region. Written in an engaging manner, this book will be of interest both to the general reader and to academics and practitioners in water management and gender/women’s studies. Published by Zubaan.
