Book Assessment of Groundwater Use in Thirteen Counties in Southern Ontario

Download or read book Assessment of Groundwater Use in Thirteen Counties in Southern Ontario written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An assessment of groundwater use within and surrounding the Grand River watershed is being carried out as part of a study of the potential impacts of climate change and variability on the groundwater resources of the region. Groundwater use, measured in terms of total annual water withdrawal, is estimated for each of the 171 census subdivisions which form the 13 counties within the study area. The average rate of groundwater use tor the area is 22.4 mm/yr with local rates as high as 586 mm/yr. Non-municipal groundwater use associated with water taking permits accounts for 70 percent of the total use. The highest rates of groundwater use are significant relative to recharge and therefore groundwater withdrawals should be represented in climate change impacts analyses. Groundwater supply limitations resulting from inadequate well yield and poor water quality are also estimated and are related to the geology of the region"--Abstract.

Book Investigating Groundwater Systems on Regional and National Scales

Download or read book Investigating Groundwater Systems on Regional and National Scales written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-01-19 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater is a basic resource for humans and natural ecosystems and is one of the nation's most important natural resources. Groundwater is pumped from wells to supply drinking water to about 130 million U.S. residents and is used in all 50 states. About 40 percent of the nation's public water supply and much of the water used for irrigation is provided by groundwater. Despite the importance of groundwater as one of our most precious natural resources, an organized, effective program to provide an ongoing assessment of the nation's groundwater resources does not exist. With encouragement from the U.S. Congress, the USGS is planning for a new program of regional and national scale assessment of U.S. groundwater resources, thus helping bring new order to its various groundwater resources-related activities. The Survey's senior scientists requested advice in regard to the design of such a program. In response, the committee undertook this study in support of developing an improved program relevant to regional and national assessment of groundwater resources. This report is a product of the Committee on USGS Water Resources Research, which provides consensus advice on scientific, research, and programmatic issues to the Water Resources Division (WRD) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The committee is one of the groups that work under the auspices of the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Research Council (NRC). The committee considers a variety of topics that are important scientifically and programmatically to the USGS and the nation, and it issues reports when appropriate. This report concerns the work of the WRD in science and technology relevant to assessments of groundwater resources on regional and national scales. The USGS has been conducting scientific activity relevant to groundwater resources for over 100 years and, as summarized in Appendix A, today groundwater-related work occurs throughout the WRD.

Book The Handbook of Groundwater Engineering

Download or read book The Handbook of Groundwater Engineering written by John H. Cushman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition adds several new chapters and is thoroughly updated to include data on new topics such as hydraulic fracturing, CO2 sequestration, sustainable groundwater management, and more. Providing a complete treatment of the theory and practice of groundwater engineering, this new handbook also presents a current and detailed review of how to model the flow of water and the transport of contaminants both in the unsaturated and saturated zones, covers the protection of groundwater, and the remediation of contaminated groundwater.

Book Integrated Water Management in Canada

Download or read book Integrated Water Management in Canada written by Dan Shrubsole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides readers with an opportunity to learn from front line water managers of watershed-based agencies across Canada about integrated water management (or integrated water resource management). In common with practice in much of the world, the responsibility for implementing integrated watershed management in Canada is fragmented. Each province and territory in Canada has developed unique approaches or governance models to guide decision making in that regard. Thus, this edited volume enables readers from around the world to gain insight on the best practices in Canada for achieving success and addressing barriers to implement IWM. Although there remains non consensus about how to "best" approach river basin management, some of the main observations include: There is a need to balance a focus on "the big picture", with scoping the scale and scope of planning activities in order that feasible and effective solutions can be implemented Three types of integration are popular among the agencies included in the book: (i) among environment, economy and society, (ii) interactions between people and the environment and (iii) integration (or coordination) of administrative activities. Much more attention is required to achieving effective engagement from Indigenous communities The chapters were originally published in a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.
