Book Regional Analysis and the New International Division of Labor

Download or read book Regional Analysis and the New International Division of Labor written by F. Moulaert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world, a sense of crisis has settled in like a nightmare that refuses to leave. We look towards the horizon with apprehension. Major changes are afoot. Older industrial regions, once rich and powerful, stand by helplessly as factories close down. Poor countries are sliding into bankruptcy, unable even to feed their populations. In a few scattered enclaves, called ex port platforms, new manufacturing plants spring up overnight: they employ predominantly young, unmarried women and ship their products to unknown destinations overseas. Small companies are eaten up by bigger ones which, in turn, are absorbed by still larger conglomerates. Some industrial sectors are wiped out altogether. Tensions between states are increasing. More and more countries are coming under military rule. Torture and terrorism are turned into tools of official state policy. Civil wars are fought in Central America, Northern Africa, and Southeast Asia. International conflict flares up be tween Britain and Argentina, Iraq and Iran, Ethiopia and Somalia. Economic growth has slowed to a crawl. Inflation undercuts the livelihood of the poor. The small producer is ruined. It appears that we are involved in a major restructuring of the capitalist world. The problems are profits, capital accumulation, and efficiency in pro duction. To make the indicators point up, whole regions are sacrificed, new technologies are put in place, and new locational patterns are created as the world is carved up into a new international division oflabor.

Book The New International Division of Labour

Download or read book The New International Division of Labour written by Guido Starosta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the debate over the new international division of labour (NIDL) that dominated discussions in international political economy and development studies until the early 1990s. It submits that a revised NIDL thesis can shed light on the specificities of capitalist development in various parts of the world today. Taken together, the contributions amount to a novel value-theoretical approach to understanding the NIDL. This rests upon the distinction between the global economic content that determines the constitution and dynamics of the NIDL and the evolving national political forms that mediate its development. More specifically, the authors argue that uneven development is an expression of the underlying essential unity of the production of relative surplus-value on a world scale. They substantiate and illustrate this argument through several international case studies, including Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Ireland, South Korea, Spain and Venezuela.

Book Regional Development Theories Their Application

Download or read book Regional Development Theories Their Application written by Benjamin Howard Higgins and published by New Brunswick, N.J. : Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world today we are seeing former nation-states, as different as Yugoslavia, Somalia, and Canada, breaking up, or threatening to break up, into regions. The conflicts are economic, social, ethnic, linguistic, religious, political, and cultural. Regional Development Theories and Their Application analyzes the reasons for these conflicts and shows why attempts to eliminate regional disparities within nations have been largely unsuccessful. Part I of the book is an exposition, analysis, and critique of various theories of regional development. Part II presents case studies in the United States, Great Britain, the European Community, Australia, and less developed countries. Part III outlines the lessons learned from past experience and sketches a new political economy of regional development. Higgins and Savoie demonstrate that new knowledge is more likely to be discovered if social scientists work at the regional and community levels, rather than exclusively at the macrolevel (national economy, society, and polity) or the microlevel (the household, firm, industry, and local government). Regional Development Theories and Their Application provides a readable, comprehensible survey of the literature and current debates in the fields of regional economics, development, policy, and planning. It lays the foundation for improved social and economic policy and theoretical synthesis that will be of interest to sociologists, economists, professionals working in regional development, and political scientists and theorists.

Book Regional Industrial Analysis and Development

Download or read book Regional Industrial Analysis and Development written by Geoffrey J. D. Hewings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977. This book provides an introduction to some of the more important techniques of regional analysis – techniques derived from geographical, regional economic and regional science theory – and describes the way some of these techniques have been applied in the identification of problems, development of strategy and evaluation of regional programmes. The theory and applications of methods of regional analysis are integrated with the use of examples taken from the USA, the UK and Canada. The author introduces the problems which are encountered in the field of regional analysis, describes some of the analytical tools, beginning with the fundamental model of the economic base approach, and then examines regional flows and the applicability of international trade theory to interregional trade. Considering the shortcomings of the aggregated base approach, input-output analysis is also examined.
