Book Consolidated PB2Y Coronado

Download or read book Consolidated PB2Y Coronado written by Richard Hoffman and published by Naval Fighters. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PB2Y Coronado was a large flying boat patrol bomber designed by Consolidated Aircraft. After deliveries of the PBY Catalina, also a Consolidated aircraft, began in 1935, the United States Navy began planning for the next generation of patrol bombers. Orders for two prototypes, the XPB2Y-1 and the Sikorsky XPBS-1, were placed in 1936; the prototype Coronado first flew in December 1937. After trials with the XPB2Y-1 prototype revealed some stability issues, the design was finalized as the PB2Y-2, with a large cantilever wing, twin tail, and four Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engines. The two inner engines were fitted with four-bladed reversible pitch propellers; the outer engines had standard three-bladed feathering props. Like the PBY Catalina before it, the PB2Y's wingtip floats retracted to reduce drag and increase range.

As America's Mercury Seven astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, television cameras focused on the brave smiles of their young wives. Overnight, these women were transformed from military spouses into American royalty. They had tea with Jackie Kennedy, appeared on the cover of Life magazine, and quickly grew into fashion icons. Annie Glenn, with her picture-perfect marriage, was the envy of the other wives; JFK made it clear that platinum-blonde Rene Carpenter was his favorite; and licensed pilot Trudy Cooper arrived with a secret that needed to stay hidden from NASA. Together with the other wives they formed the Astronaut Wives Club, providing one another with support and friendship, coffee and cocktails. As their celebrity rose--and as divorce and tragedy began to touch their lives--the wives continued to rally together, forming bonds that would withstand the test of time, and they have stayed friends for over half a century.

Book Britain s Fleet Air Arm in World War II

Download or read book Britain s Fleet Air Arm in World War II written by Ron Mackay and published by Schiffer Pub Limited. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Branch of the Royal Navy that was to carve its name into maritime history as the Fleet Air Arm faced an orphan existence up to 1937 when the Admiralty, having handed over control in 1918 to the RAF, resumed charge of its aviators. The Force was poorly equipped and dangerously short of qualified personnel with which to effectively challenge its Axis adversaries, and suffered accordingly in the initial stages of World War II. The provision of superior carrier aircraft designs (primarily from the U.S. Grumman and Chance-Vought companies), and a similar whole-sale expansion in Fleet and Escort carriers (most of the latter supplied from American shipyards), as well as the personnel with which to operate the warships and aircraft ensured that by 1943 the Fleet Air Arm was an all-round, efficient Force capable of independent combat operations in all the major War Zones right up to VJ-Day.

Book The Italian Economy

Download or read book The Italian Economy written by Vera Zamagni and published by World Economies. This book was released on 2018 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacies of two great civilizations--the Roman Empire and Renaissance city-states--are still apparent in today's Italian economy in its internationalization, strong regional cultures, tourism, and arts industries. Less appreciated is the country's status as continental Europe's second-largest industrial power, notwithstanding the disproportionate significance of SMEs in Italy. Vera Zamagni's survey of the Italian economy and its modern history outlines its unique shape and structure and how human factors explain its strengths in social networks, "niche capitalism," and well-being indicators, as well as its weaknesses reflected in regional imbalances, political instability, and recently in banking. Focusing on economic developments since 1945, Zamagni explains how the contemporary economy is the result of the contours of this longer history, of the country's geography--low on natural resources but blessed with good weather and shipping opportunities--and more recent factors such as the country's membership in the EU and the changing profile of Italian demography and the country's surprisingly measured response to the challenges of migration. Drawing upon both conventional and heterodox approaches, the book concludes with an assessment of the prospects for the Italian economy. The book provides a concise overview of value for students in politics, political economy, history, and economics and for professionals looking to understand the nature of recent Italian economic performance.

Book Hitler s Italian Allies

    Book Details:
  • Author : MacGregor Knox
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2000-10-30
  • ISBN : 9781139432030
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Hitler s Italian Allies written by MacGregor Knox and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascist Italy's ultimate defeat was foreordained. It was a pygmy among giants, and Hitler's failure to destroy the Soviet Union in 1941 doomed all three Axis powers. But Italy's defeat was unique; the only asset that it conquered - briefly - with its own unaided forces in the entire Second World War was a dusty and useless corner of Africa, British Somaliland. And Italy's forces dissolved in 1943 almost without resistance, in stark contrast to the grim fight to the last cartridge of Hitler's army or the fanatical faithfulness unto death of the troops of Imperial Japan. This book tries to understand why the Italian armed forces and Fascist regime were so remarkably ineffective at an activity - war - central to their existence. It approaches the issue above all from the perspective of military culture, through analysis of the services' failure to imagine modern warfare and through a topical structure that offers a social-cultural, political, military-economic, strategic, operational, and tactical cross-section of the war effort.
