Book excerpt: It is eleven thousand B.C. and the early Native American tribes are battling for the colossal herds of bison that roam the prairie. As the Four Tribes of the mountain people prepare to haul bison meat back to the western peaks, Mira, daughter of the chieftain of the Tolai tribe and her mate Thais, are happily reunited with their pet, Wolf, and his new mate, Dona. Anxious to depart before the Menkala, brutal warriors of the plains, sniff them out, Mira and her young family have no idea just how challenging their trek is about to become. While the Menkala lurk in the shadows and wait for the gods to favor them, a fiery tail blazes through the sky and hits the earth. Certain that it is a sign, the tribe heads toward the point of impact where they find a glowing ember they believe to be a powerful and magical stone sent by the gods. As a new religion is born that threatens to destroy the tribes of the plains, the Four Tribes set out on a perilous journey where Mira will face the greatest trials and adventures of her life. In this continuing tale of adventure, war, and struggles in the North American wilderness, a battle ensues for possession of a magical stone as a young Native American realizes she must kill in order to live.

Book excerpt: The saga of Mithgar continues from the national bestselling author of City of Jade and Dragondoom... For more than a hundred years, a bitter dispute over how the High King had been selected simmered in the dark halls of the royal family whose line had not been chosen. They held fast to their anger and bitterness through generations. Finally one of their sons, Arkov of Garia, seized the throne through treachery and by force of arms, claiming it as rightfully his. But in his haste to see the king and queen slain, Arkov failed to confirm the death of the young prince, Reyer, who was spirited away to safety. On a distant and mysterious island ruled by Elves, where he was raised and trained by a trusted Captain of the slain High King, Reyer has now come of age and learned of his lineage. With those loyal to the bloodline of the true High King rallied to his side, Reyer will lead an army against the Usurper—to gain back the crown and kingdom stolen from him and to restore Mithgar to its rightful rule.

Book excerpt: In October 1888, the Welsh-American explorer Henry Stanley started his African expedition to rescue the colonial governor Emin Pasha, whose colony in Eastern Sudan was burning with a revolt. Stanley's expedition was tired, and in search of food, he sent a couple of his team members to the closest village. They came back with a couple of locals, which sight was different from other African tribes. That was one of the first encounters with pigmees, an ancient African known from Homer's Illiad. Book excerpt: I will die up here in the high mountains, she thought. And be like Solanda, Mothers old friend, who vanished as the deer vanish. (A demon tricked me by looking like a boy). You climb too high, the hunter said, squatting down on his haunches and leaning against a boulder. Nothing eat up here. Mira finally got her voice: Why are you here? I follow you. He smiled. Mira stared down the great mountain, knowing she was trapped, that she had climbed too high where monsters are. He had stalked her like a deer. And she had been as foolish as a deer. To kill me? He gave her a surprised, then puzzled look. Why I want to kill you? To give the gods their sacrifice. He looked at her for a long time, and Mira felt strange. He was handsome, his hair and beard night-black, his blue eyes arrogant, confident. A smile that was very close to a smirk. He was a savage-looking boy, but she saw that he was a boy, not two seasons older than her. His deerskin leggings were well-used and torn ragged, made by skillful hands, but not any of the river tribes. Slung over his back was a very ornate spear thrower. A brace of feathered arrows in a wolfskin pouch flared out of his back. His right fist gripped a long spear crowned with a tooth of flint. Rawhide thongs belted his leggings; on his waistbelt a stone hatchet and long stone knife were strapped. His arms and legs rippled with savage muscles. Mira clutched her little pointed stick. She edged down the mountain slope, to see what he would do. Why did you follow me? He was a shadow now, against the boulder, but she could see his white teeth grinning. You are very pretty, he called out of the evening. He didnt follow her. He wasnt going to hurt her. She scuttered down the slope, grinning now, heart pounding and sudden blood in her face. What he said to me! You climb too high, Pretty One! his voice echoed behind her, making a crazy thrill in her stomach. Run home before it gets dark. Her face burned red. Why! she called, grinning over her shoulder. Because a knife-tooth has come to this mountain.

Book The Making of a Village

Download or read book The Making of a Village written by Asoka Kumar Sen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-06-14 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of a Village examines the social and cultural life of indigenous peoples in India. It unfolds intimate aspects of Adivasi history such as the birth of a village, its demographic formation, forging of social relations, in- and out-migration, and the dialectics of the village as a socio-physical space during precolonial and colonial periods. Drawing on oral, archival and empirical data from eastern India, it highlights the interconnected themes of inflection of identity; the change of the Adivasis from historic agents to colonial subjects and their arcadia to a servile landscape; and the indigenous notion of state. It also initiates a dialogue between the past and present to bring into sharp relief ideas of village community, indigeneity, migration, governance, colonialism, agency, subjecthood, rural change, environment and ecology. Redefining the study of rural sociology in South Asia, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern Indian history, politics, development studies, sociology, social and cultural anthropology, Adivasi and indigenous studies, and South Asian studies.
