Book excerpt: A radically new understanding of and practical approach to climate change by noted environmentalist Paul Hawken, creator of the New York Times bestseller Drawdown Regeneration offers a visionary new approach to climate change, one that weaves justice, climate, biodiversity, equity, and human dignity into a seamless tapestry of action, policy, and transformation that can end the climate crisis in one generation. It is the first book to describe and define the burgeoning regeneration movement spreading rapidly throughout the world. Regeneration describes how an inclusive movement can engage the majority of humanity to save the world from the threat of global warming, with climate solutions that directly serve our children, the poor, and the excluded. This means we must address current human needs, not future existential threats, real as they are, with initiatives that include but go well beyond solar, electric vehicles, and tree planting to include such solutions as the fifteen-minute city, bioregions, azolla fern, food localization, fire ecology, decommodification, forests as farms, and the number one solution for the world: electrifying everything. Paul Hawken and the nonprofit Regeneration Organization are launching a series of initiatives to accompany the book, including a streaming video series, curriculum, podcasts, teaching videos, and climate action software. Regeneration is the inspiring and necessary guide to inform the rapidly spreading climate movement.

Book excerpt: “Calls to mind such early moderns as Hemingway and Fitzgerald...Some of the most powerful antiwar literature in modern English fiction.”—The Boston Globe The first book of the Regeneration Trilogy—a Booker Prize nominee and one of Entertainment Weekly’s 100 All-Time Greatest Novels. In 1917 Siegfried Sasson, noted poet and decorated war hero, publicly refused to continue serving as a British officer in World War I. His reason: the war was a senseless slaughter. He was officially classified "mentally unsound" and sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital. There a brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. William Rivers, set about restoring Sassoon’s “sanity” and sending him back to the trenches. This novel tells what happened as only a novel can. It is a war saga in which not a shot is fired. It is a story of a battle for a man's mind in which only the reader can decide who is the victor, who the vanquished, and who the victim. One of the most amazing feats of fiction of our time, Regeneration has been hailed by critics across the globe. More than one hundred years since World War I, this book is as timely and relevant as ever.

Book Biomimetic Materials for Tissue Regenerations 2nd edition

Download or read book Biomimetic Materials for Tissue Regenerations 2nd edition written by Mariappan Rajan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tissue engineering, the ultimate goal is to engineer an entire functioning organ that requires building complex structures of different tissue types. A three-dimensional scaffold seeded with desired cell types. In order to resemble the natural formations of the organs, cells have to be correctly located in relation to one another. It has been shown in cocultures that cells have the capability of spontaneous tissue-like organization when seeded into the scaffold. The ideal scaffolds should have an interconnected porous structure, well-designed pore size and adequate porosity to allow cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation. Moreover, effective bioactive agents and nutrient exchange are crucial during new tissue development. Thus the individual organ cell is a specific mechanism for the construction or regeneration of the cells. Artificial scaffolds have been applied and used as supporting structures for cell cultures as well as for the domination of cell growth in the repair of impaired tissues or organs. During the cell regeneration, the scaffold temporarily helps in cell regeneration and gradually biodegrade either in the course of the healing process or after, and a new tissue with a desired shape and properties is produced. The challenge of tissue engineering is to mimic what happens in nature. Attempts are being made to engineer in vitro practically every tissue and organ in the body. Work is proceeding in creating tissue-engineered liver, nerve, kidney, intestine, pancreas, and even heart muscle and valves. In the area of connective tissues, work has been ongoing worldwide for many years in the engineering of tendon, ligament, bone, and cartilage. Recently, the number of reports was succeeded in skin, bladder, airway, and bone, where tissue-engineered constructs have been used successfully in patients. This Research Topic is the collection of body organ regeneration materials and their cell adhesion and migration for the development and regeneration of tissues. Biomimetic materials promise to advance in current understanding of organ regeneration and repair by providing tools to recapitulate and monitor relevant properties of cellular - microenvironment interactions. Although cell adhesion, migration, and development aspects of tissues have shown success in the clinic, better, more intricate models are needed to understand drivers of tissue repair and regeneration fully. Tissue engineering bears tremendous potential toward gaining a complete understanding of the underlying biological and physical mechanisms advancing the treatment of damaged organs. The following Research Topic “Bio-mimetic materials for tissue regenerations” discusses examples of progress toward this objective. • Bio-mimicking scaffold materials for tissue regeneration • Cell adhesion to scaffold materials • Role of materials for the migration of cells • Mechanisms of cell growth for organ development

Book Ruminations Peregrinations and Regenerations

Download or read book Ruminations Peregrinations and Regenerations written by Christopher J. Hansen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peregrinations, Ruminations, and Regenerations: A Critical Approach to Doctor Who examines the famous BBC science fiction show as a cultural artifact in dialogue with other science fiction, with politics and religion, and with the culture at large, both in terms of how it reflects and comments upon that culture and in terms of the audience and the peculiarities of its response. This book enables researchers in film and media to make historical, industrial, aesthetic, and ideological connections between and among Doctor Who and other shows and historical events since its inception in 1963. This volume is a new entry in a relatively new area. As the young fans of Doctor Who have matured, and as many have become scholars, they are returning to the show to consider it from a scholarly perspective. It is also of use in the media studies classroom to address directly the issues presented by the longest running science fiction show in the history of the medium. Peregrinations, Ruminations, and Regenerations considers not only cultural ramifications and connections, but audience studies as well.

Download or read book City Girls written by Valerie J. Matsumoto and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Even before wartime incarceration, Japanese Americans largely lived in separate cultural communities from their West Coast neighbors. The first-generation American children, the Nisei, were American citizens, spoke English, and were integrated in public schools, yet were also socially isolated in many ways from their peers and subject to racism. Their daughters especially found rapport in a flourishing network of ethnocultural youth organizations. Until now, these groups have remained hidden from the historical record, both because they were girls' groups and because evidence of them was considered largely ephemeral. In her second book, Valerie Matsumoto has recreated this hidden world of female friendship and comradery, tracing it from the Jazz age through internment to the postwar period. Matsumoto argues that these groups were more than just social outlets for Nisei teenage girls. Rather, she shows how they were critical networks during the wartime upheavals of Japanese Americans. Young Nisei women helped their families navigate internment and, more importantly, recreated communities when they returned to their homes in the immediate postwar period. This book will be a considerable contribution to our understanding of Japanese life in America, youth culture, ethnic history, urban history, and Western history. Matsumoto has interviewed and gained the trust of many (now old) women who were part of these girls' clubs"--

Book excerpt: Lysozyme contains the proceedings of the Lysozyme Conference held in New York on October 29-31, 1972 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of lysozyme by Sir Alexander Fleming. The papers explore the chemistry and structure of lysozymes, their interactions with substrates and inhibitors, and distribution in tissues. Changes associated with various disease states are also discussed, along with evidence indicating that lysozyme may significantly alter certain mammalian cell constituents. Comprised of 42 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the structure of various lysozymes, including avian and mammalian lysozymes. The use of X-ray crystallography for lysozyme analysis is also considered. Subsequent chapters focus on the structure of bacterial cell walls; affinity labeling of lysozyme; substrate requirements of glycosidases for lytic activity on bacterial walls; and the solution behavior of hen egg white and human lysozyme. The role of lysozyme in hematology and its relation to myeloperoxidase and lactoferrin are also examined, together with lysozyme measurements in acute leukemia; serum and urine lysozyme in sarcoidosis; lysozyme as a component of human cartilage; and agglutination of rat liver mitochondria by lysozyme. This monograph should be of interest to practitioners and researchers in the fields of biophysics, chemistry, microbiology, physiology, and clinical medicine.
