Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one read the story of Sarah and Hagar, or Jezebel and Rahab today, if one is a woman reader situated in a postcolonial society? This is the question undergirding this work, which considers a selection of biblical texts in which women have significant roles. Employing both a gender and a postcolonial lens, it asks sharp questions both of the interests embedded in the texts themselves and of their impact upon contemporary women readers. Whereas most postcolonial studies have been undertaken from the perspective of the colonized this work reads the texts from the position of a settler descendant, and is an attempt to engage with the disquietening and challenging questions that reading from such a location raises. Letters from early settler women in New Zealand, contemporary fiction, and personal reminiscence become tools for the task, complementing those traditionally employed in critical biblical readings.

Book Georgia O Keeffe Photographer

Download or read book Georgia O Keeffe Photographer written by Lisa Volpe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking introduction to the photographic work of an iconic modern artist The pathbreaking artist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) is revered for her iconic paintings of flowers, skyscrapers, animal skulls, and Southwestern landscapes. Her photographic work, however, has not been explored in depth until now. After the death of her husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, in 1946, photography indeed became an important part of O'Keeffe's artistic production. She trained alongside the photographer Todd Webb, revisiting subjects that she had painted years before--landforms of the Southwest, the black door in her courtyard, the road outside her window, and flowers. O'Keeffe's carefully composed photographs are not studies of detail or decisive moments; rather, they focus on the arrangement of forms. This is the first major investigation of O'Keeffe's photography and traces the artist's thirty-year exploration of the medium, including a complete catalogue of her photographic work. Essays by leading scholars address O'Keeffe's photographic approach and style and situate photography within the artist's overall practice. This richly illustrated volume significantly broadens our understanding of one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century.

Book Practical Theology in Church and Society

Download or read book Practical Theology in Church and Society written by Joseph E. Bush Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church exists in the world, and our ministry is inextricably social in nature. Practical theology takes this seriously and asks us to reflect on our practice of ministry in both church and society. This book attends to our practice as individuals in ministry, to our corporate practice as congregations in ministry, and to our practice as Christians within the wider social and natural world. Practical Theology in Church and Society brings into sharper focus two perspectives on practical theology. One is the view through the wide-angle lens of justice-oriented action, which hopes for liberation. This view encompasses a broad vista of social forces for justice and injustice when evaluating local movements and local ministries. The other perspective takes the narrower focus of the action-reflection model as it is used to zoom in on individual actions and particular practices of ministry such as pastoral care. The purpose of the book is to integrate these two perspectives on practical theology. It explicates a cyclical method for doing theology that has corollaries within the disciplines of practical theology, liberation theology, missiology, congregation studies, and ministerial leadership. The volume provides resources for developing more socially and ecologically engaged ministries, and it draws implications for ministerial education.

It examines the many variables-among directors, directees, even meeting spaces-that affect and enliven this ministry. And it summarizes pitfalls, success, and discoveries.
