Book The Dutch Reformed Church in the American Colonies

Download or read book The Dutch Reformed Church in the American Colonies written by Gerald Francis De Jong and published by William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company. This book was released on 1978 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Dutch Reformed Church in the American Colonies remains the best study of the early years of the Reformed Church in North America. De Jong's careful account takes the readers on a fascinating journey from the establishment of a Dutch church at a mill in New Amsterdam to the early years of an indigenous American denomination. Along the way we become acquainted with issues in the colonial period that are pertinent in the twenty-first century for the Reformed Church in America: church multiplication, leadership training, discipleship, regional tensions, adaptation to cultural changes, worship, and liturgy. De Jong helps us to see that, in many respects, the more things change, the more they remain the same." The Rev. Dennis N. Voskuil, Ph.D. President and De Witt Professor of Church History Western Theological Seminary, Holland, Michigan "The reissue of De Jong's classic study is very welcome. Though of course there has been other important work on various aspects of the colonial Dutch Reformed experience in the thirty years since the book's first appearance, still it remains the standard comprehensive account - a careful and thorough work that shows a mastery of the sources and sticks close to them." The Rev. John Coakley, Ph.D L. Russel Feakes Professor of Church History, New Brunswick Theological Seminary New Brunswick, New Jersey

Book Taking the Jesus Road

    Book Details:
  • Author : LeRoy Koopman
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780802831255
  • Pages : 542 pages

Download or read book Taking the Jesus Road written by LeRoy Koopman and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Reformed Church's relationship to Native Americans is one of persistence and optimism in the face of overwhelming odds. Unfortunately, it's also a story that reflects all too well the sad record of U.S. dealings with America's first inhabitants. In this frank, well-balanced account of the Reformed Church's Native American missions and churches, LeRoy Koopman recounts the spiritual journey of the "Jesus Road" shared by Reformed and Native American Christians. "Taking the Jesus Road" outlines how government and church often cooperated with each other in implementing shifting policies that allowed the native peoples little or no voice in their own destiny. Koopman does not hesitate to point out how early missionaries often equated the Christian faith with white culture but also gives credit for their tireless efforts to seek a better life for the people they were serving. Much of the book is devoted to the stories of particular ministries, including the six Native American congregations that remain a vital part of the Reformed Church today.

Download or read book Loyalty and Loss written by Lynn Japinga and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a meticulously researched yet also deeply personal history of the Reformed Church in America throughout much of the twentieth century, Lynn Japinga's Loyalty and Loss will be of intense interest to the members of the RCA, reminding them of where they have come from, of the bonds that have held them together, and of the many conflicts and challenges that they have together faced and ultimately surmounted. For those outside the RCA the questions of identity raised by this book will often sound very familiar, especially, perhaps, in its account of the church's struggle throughout recent decades to reconcile the persistently ecumenical spirit of many of its members with the desire of others within the denomination to preserve a real or imagined conservative exclusivity. Others may find the conflicts within the RCA reflective of their own experiences, especially as they relate to such issues as denominational mergers, abortion, the Viet Nam war, and women's ordination.

Book Pioneers to Partners

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-06

  • Pages : 712 pages

Download or read book Pioneers to Partners written by Gordon Laman and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Japan's early exposure to Christianity by the very successful Roman Catholic mission to Japan in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the resultant persecution and prohibition of Christianity, Laman lays the groundwork for understanding the experience of nineteenth-century Protestant missionaries, among whom those of the Reformed Church in America were in the forefront. The early efforts of the Browns, Verbecks, Ballaghs, and Stouts, their failures and successes, are recounted within the cultural and political context of the anti-Western, anti-Christian Japan of the time. Verbeck's service to the government helped bring about gradual change. The first Protestant church was organized with a vision for ecumenical mission, and during several promising years, churches and mission schools were organized. Reformed Church missionaries encouraged and trained Japanese leaders from the beginning, the first Japanese ministers were ordained in 1877, and the Japanese church soon exhibited a spirit of independence, ushering in an era of growing missionary/Japanese partnership. The rise of the Japanese empire, a reinvigorated nationalism, and its progression to militarist ultranationalism brought on a renewed anti-Western, anti-Christian reaction and new challenges to both mission and church. With the outbreak of World War II, the Japanese government consolidated all Protestant churches into the Kyodan to facilitate control. Laman continues the account of Reformed Church partners in mission in Japan in the midst of post-war devastation and subsequent social and political tensions. The ecumenical involvement and continued clarification of mutual mission finds the Reformed Church a full participant with a mature Japanese church.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches written by Benedetto and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999-11-03 with total page 1122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its name implies, the Reformed tradition grew out of the 16th century Protestant Reformation. The Reformed churches consider themselves to be the Catholic Church reformed. The movement originated in the reform efforts of Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) of Zurich and John Calvin (1509-1564) of Geneva. Although the Reformed movement was dependent upon many Protestant leaders, it was Calvin's tireless work as a writer, preacher, teacher, and social and ecclesiastical reformer that provided a substantial body of literature and an ethos from which the Reformed tradition grew. Today, the Reformed churches are a multicultural, multiethnic, and multinational phenomenon. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches contains information on the major personalities, events, facts, movements, and beliefs of the Reformed churches. This is done through a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and over 800 cross-referenced dictionary entries on leaders, personalities, events, facts, movements, and beliefs of the Reformed churches.
