Download or read book European Drug Policies written by Renaud Colson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drug control regime established by the international community has not succeeded in curbing either the demand for, or the offer of, narcotics. But, despite a series of developments in the Americas – including the legalisation of cannabis in Uruguay and in several states in the United States of America – there is still little support in Europe for repealing drug-prohibition laws. Nevertheless, a gradual policy convergence reveals the emergence of a European model favouring public-health strategies over a strictly penal approach to combatting drugs, while growing transnational support for legalisation indicates the persistence of an alternative paradigm for drug policy. This book examines the various influences on drug policies in Europe, as grassroots movements, NGO networks, private foundations and academic research centres increasingly confront the prevailing discourses of drug prohibition. Pursuing an interdisciplinary approach and bringing together legal scholars, social scientists and practitioners, it provides a comprehensive and critical assessment of drug policy reform in Europe.

Book Toward a Cultural Archive of la Movida

Download or read book Toward a Cultural Archive of la Movida written by William J. Nichols and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Cultural Archive of la Movida revisits the cultural and social milieu in which laMovida, an explosion of artistic production in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was articulated discursively, aesthetically, socially, and politically. We connect this experience with a broader national and international context that takes it beyond the city of Madrid and outside the borders of Spain. This collection of essays links the political and social undertakings of this cultural period with youth movements in Spain and other international counter-cultural or underground movements. Moving away from biographical experiences or the identification of further participants and works that belong to laMovida, the articles collected in this volume situate this movement within the political and social development of post-Franco Spain. Finally, it also offers a reading of recent politically motivated recoveries of this cultural phenomenon through exhibitions, state sponsored documentaries, musicals, or tourist itineraries. The perception of Spain as representative of a successful dual transition from dictatorship to democracy and free market capitalism created a “Spanish model” that has been emulated in countries like Portugal, Argentina, Chile and Hungary, all formerly ruled by totalitarian regimes. While social scientists study the promises, contradictions and failures of the Spanish Transición—especially on issues of memory, repression, and (the lack of) reconciliation —our approach from the humanities offers another vantage point to a wider discussion of an unfinished chapter in recent Spanish history by focusing on laMovida as the “cultural archive” whose cultural transitions parallel the political and economic ones. The transgressive, urban nature of this movement demonstrated an overt desire, especially among Spanish youth, to reach onto a global arena emulating the punk and new wave aesthetic of such cities as London, New York, Paris, and Berlin. Art, design, film, music, fashion during this period helped to forge a sense of a modern urban identity in Spain that also reflected the tensions between modernity and tradition, global forces and local values, international mass media technology and regional customs.

Book Terrorism and Anti terror Legislation the Terrorised Legislator

Download or read book Terrorism and Anti terror Legislation the Terrorised Legislator written by Anna Oehmichen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume deals with terrorism, both the legislative reactions to it and its impact on human rights. It is argued that the preservation of human rights is vital for the prevention of terrorism, encompassing state and non-state terrorism alike. Further, the study shows that legislators tend to disregard fundamental human rights when confronted with terrorism. They are "terrorised" themselves by the incident and risk to overreact. After an historical account of selected (pseudo-?)terrorist movements throughout time and space, an inventory of anti-terror legislation in four European countries within the last forty years follows. In this context, the author examines the role of the judiciary with a special focus on the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. As a result, we get a complex view on what happened with regard to terrorism and anti-terrorism in different European countries in the past and is happening at present, and what this means for human rights. This allows us to put contemporary anti-terror legislation into perspective. How have different governments dealt with terrorism in the past? How has the law developed after September 11th 2001? Which lessons can be learned, and what can we expect in the future? About this book 'This book is to be recommended since it discusses both the European choices in the fight against terror and their problems.' Sarah Baier in Newsletter Menschenrechte 2010 (1).
