Download or read book Reflections on Naturalism written by José Ignacio Galparsoro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To naturalists, there is no such thing as complete justification for any claim, and so requiring complete warrant for naturalist proposals is an unreasonable request. The proper guideline for naturalist proposals seems thus clear: develop it using the methods of science; if this leads to a fruitful stance, then explicate and reassess. The resulting offer will exhibit virtuous circularity if its explanatory feedback loop involves critical reassessment as the explanations it encompasses play out. So viewed, naturalism is a philosophical perspective that seeks to unite in a virtuous circle the natural sciences and non-foundationalist, broadly-based empiricism. Other common lines of antinaturalist complaint are that naturalization efforts seem fruitful only in some areas, also that several endeavors outside the sciences serve as sources of knowledge into human life and the human condition, especially in areas where science does not reach terribly far as yet. It seems hard not to grant some truth to many allegories from literature, art and some religions. Naturalism has room for knowledge gathered outside science, provided the imported claims satisfy also by naturalistic methods. Naturalism and the debate about its scope and limits thrive on discrepancy. We hope that, collectively, the selected essays that follow will give a fair view of the vitality and tribulations of naturalism as a variegated contemporary philosophical perspective.

Book excerpt: Developing skills and competency in CBT is a complex process of which self-observation and self-reflection are an essential part. In this new book, leading figures Beverly Haarhoff and Richard Thwaites outline the rationale for a focus on self-reflective practice in CBT, before offering practical and accessible guidelines demonstrating how this can be achieved in training and practice. Highlighting relevant research throughout and using case studies to illustrate theory in practice, ten chapters consider: - reflection in training and in supervision and self-supervision, - reflecting on the therapeutic relationship, on our sociocultural perceptions and biases and on client feedback - how reflection is vital to self-care and to becoming a better therapist, supervisor and trainer. This is an essential read for trainees in both high and low intensity CBT programmes, those on broader CBT courses, and for qualified practitioners working independently to enhance their self-reflective capacity.

Book excerpt: The end of the Realm has come, and I—I am its destroyer. Vi’eri finds herself at the end of time. The death of her realm. War looms, and the people of the world rally behind her, for they have but two options: Fight or die. Alone and afraid, she hides herself from the others, seeking solitude from their spiteful glares. However, one day, a young human asks her to tell him a tale. A tale from her past. The tale of how she’d brought this destruction upon them. Are the answers she seeks buried deep in her past? Hidden behind a lifetime of pain? Or is this truly to be the end of all? Epic in feel and scale, told from a first-person perspective, Reflection is a must read for those who are fans of Robin Hobb's The Assassin's Apprentice or Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind.

Book Economic Diplomacy Essays And Reflections By Singapore s Negotiators

Download or read book Economic Diplomacy Essays And Reflections By Singapore s Negotiators written by Margaret Liang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singapore, a small Southeast Asian country with limited resources, transformed itself from a trading post to a successful, cosmopolitan nation with one of the most impressive growth rates in the world. Less well known, however, has been its role in regional and global trade negotiations. This book is a collection of sixteen essays written by a group of diplomats, policy-makers, and professors who became involved in international economic affairs, notably in GATT/WTO, regional and bilateral free trade negotiations. Here, they reveal their thoughts about the world economy and trading system, reflect on their experiences, and explain how they promoted national interests while advancing the global trade agenda. This book will appeal not only to professional diplomats, but to anyone interested in how international economic diplomacy works and Singapore's role and perspective as an open trading nation.

Book Risk Regulation and Administrative Constitutionalism

Download or read book Risk Regulation and Administrative Constitutionalism written by Elizabeth Fisher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade the regulatory evaluation of environmental and public health risks has been one of the most legally controversial areas of contemporary government activity. Much of that debate has been understood as a conflict between those promoting 'scientific' approaches to risk evaluation and those promoting 'democratic' approaches. This characterization of disputes has ignored the central roles of public administration and law in technological risk evaluation. This is problematic because, as shown in this book, legal disputes over risk evaluation are disputes over administrative constitutionalism in that they are disputes over what role law should play in constituting and limiting the power of administrative risk regulators. This is shown by five case studies taken from five different legal cultures: an analysis of the bifurcated role of the Southwood Working Party in the UK BSE crisis; the development of doctrines in relation to judicial review of risk evaluation in the US in the 1970s; the interpretation of the precautionary principle by environmental courts and generalist tribunals carrying out merits review in Australia; the interpretation of the WTO Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement as part of the WTO dispute settlement process; and the interpretation of the precautionary principle in the EU context. A strong argument is thus made for re-orienting the focus of scholarship in this area.
