Book Studies in Linguistic Motivation

Download or read book Studies in Linguistic Motivation written by Günter Radden and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much of language is motivated? Recently, cognitive and functional linguists have proposed new solutions to this intriguing question. The thirteen articles collected in this volume cover various aspects of motivation in grammar and in the lexicon. The phenomena discussed in the contributions can be grouped into four types of motivation, which, along with other types, are explicated in the introductory chapter: ecological motivation, i.e. motivation of a linguistic unit due to its place, or "ecological niche," within a system; genetic motivation, i.e. motivation of present-day linguistic behavior or structure due to historical factors; experiential motivation, i.e. motivation that is based on embodied experience; and cognitive motivation, i.e. motivation that is based on human knowledge and cognitive operations such as metonymy and metaphor. The languages studied in some detail include Afrikaans, Croatian, Dutch, English, French, German, Hausa, and Hungarian. This volume makes a strong case for the pervasiveness of motivation in natural language. It will be of interest to teachers, researchers and students of linguistics, especially of functional and cognitive linguistics.

Book excerpt: There are many reasons to be curious about the way people learn, and the past several decades have seen an explosion of research that has important implications for individual learning, schooling, workforce training, and policy. In 2000, How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School: Expanded Edition was published and its influence has been wide and deep. The report summarized insights on the nature of learning in school-aged children; described principles for the design of effective learning environments; and provided examples of how that could be implemented in the classroom. Since then, researchers have continued to investigate the nature of learning and have generated new findings related to the neurological processes involved in learning, individual and cultural variability related to learning, and educational technologies. In addition to expanding scientific understanding of the mechanisms of learning and how the brain adapts throughout the lifespan, there have been important discoveries about influences on learning, particularly sociocultural factors and the structure of learning environments. How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures provides a much-needed update incorporating insights gained from this research over the past decade. The book expands on the foundation laid out in the 2000 report and takes an in-depth look at the constellation of influences that affect individual learning. How People Learn II will become an indispensable resource to understand learning throughout the lifespan for educators of students and adults.

Book Who Is Asking Why Short Reflections on Motivation Courage Determination and Success

Download or read book Who Is Asking Why Short Reflections on Motivation Courage Determination and Success written by Anthony Okechukwu Ezekwu and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-08-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often, we are faced with difficult challenges, difficult decisions to make and hurdles to overcome, moments when depression seemed inevitable. In such moments, our reactions matter a lot. We can choose to be pessimists or optimists. When confronted by the same challenge, the pessimist looks for reasons why it could not be done while the optimist looks for reasons why it could be done. The simplest question by the pessimists would always be, WHY? rather than HOW? But why do we always ask why rather than the question how? There is a big difference between the two questions. The former signifies negativism while the latter signifies positivism. Negativism is worry oriented while positivism is solution oriented.... HOW IT COULD BE SOLVED! The book is therefore intended to be a personal guide for a short journey of retreat and recollection. Thus, it is divided into 19 different topics of short reflections with carefully selected stories to motivate and encourage the reader or numerous youths who are passing through difficult moments and challenges of life. It is my personal reflections on the story of life and how you handle your individual difficulties/challenges in life.

Book Understanding the Nature of Motivation and Motivating Students through Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Download or read book Understanding the Nature of Motivation and Motivating Students through Teaching and Learning in Higher Education written by David Kember and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon three interrelated open naturalistic studies conducted to better characterise the motivational orientation of students in higher education. Open semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with undergraduates, students at community colleges and students in taught postgraduate courses in Hong Kong. The analysis used an exploratory grounded theory approach and resulted in a motivational orientation framework with six continua with positive and negative poles. On enrolment students had positions on the six facets of motivation, which shifted as they progressed through their degree according to their perceptions of the teaching and learning environment. The framework can, therefore, be used to explain both initial decisions to enrol and motivation to continue studying. The interviews included descriptions of teaching approaches and learning activities and their effects on motivation. This made it possible to describe a teaching and learning environment conducive to motivation, with eight supportive conditions. Each facet of the teaching and learning environment is illustrated with quotations from the three groups of students, resulting in a guide to configuring a teaching and learning environment conducive to motivating students. The emerging community-college sector in Hong Kong is used as a case study of the effects on student motivation of the expansion of the higher education sector through private colleges. Cultural issues are discussed, particularly the performance of Asian students relative to those in the West.

Book Positive Pupil Management and Motivation

Download or read book Positive Pupil Management and Motivation written by Eddie McNamara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. In 1988 a major inquiry into the difficulties in managing adolescent behaviour was instigated by the Government under the chairmanship of Lord Elton. The report, known as the Elton Report on Discipline in Schools was published in 1989. At dissemination conferences the view was put forward that to aim to totally eliminate problematic pupils was unrealistic - a more realistic aim was to 'marginalise' the problem(s) i.e. to have effective school systems in place to respond to pupil misbehaviour so that problems of pupil discipline could be handled comfortably and not dominate the school's agenda. Starting with the findings of the Elton Report this book explores the identified causes of problem behaviour: emotional disturbance, home background, classroom factors and school system factors and then offers practical advice on how to manage them.

Book Culture Self and Motivation

Download or read book Culture Self and Motivation written by Avi Kaplan and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of the chapters in this volume—past and present collaborators of Marty Maehr, and a few of his former graduate students along the years—are motivational researchers who conduct research using diverse methods and perspectives, and in different parts of the world. All, however, see their intellectual roots in Marty’s theoretical and empirical work. The chapters in this book are divided into two sections: Motivation and Self and Culture and Motivation. Clearly, the distinctions between these two sections are very blurry, as they are in Marty’s work. And yet, when the authors were asked to contribute their chapters, the research questions they addressed seemed to have formed two foci, with personal motivation and socio-cultural processes alternating as the core versus the background in the two sections.
