Book Reflections of a Roaming Catholic

Download or read book Reflections of a Roaming Catholic written by Anthony C. E. Quainton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-20 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short collection of essays contains the occasional reflections of a Christian raised in both the Roman and Anglican traditions. They were given at the Tuesday morning Eucharist at St. Albans Episcopal parish in Washington D.C. As part of that gathering, members take turns to share their thoughts on the readings of the day, the significance of the liturgical season, or the challenges of the secular world around us. These reflections do not pretend to be either theologically profound or traditionally orthodox. Rather they are the personal reflections of the author: a self-proclaimed Roaming Catholic, whose familial and spiritual journey has joyfully passed through both the Roman and Anglican traditions.

Book excerpt: Drawing on his Roman Catholic background, personal interviews with Catholics and Evangelicals, and years of research, Chris Castaldo takes readers on a fascinating and practical exploration of the challenges and opportunities encountered by Catholics who become Evangelicals. He examines the five major reasons why Christ’s followers often leave the Catholic Church, and shows how to emulate Jesus in practical ways when engaging Catholic friends and family. And, with humor and authenticity, he shares his own faith journey in order to help readers understand and work through their own.For those who are tired of scratching their head in confusion or frustration about how their Catholic background may influence their walk with Jesus, and why on earth their Catholic family believes they’ve gone off the deep end, Holy Ground offers vast insight and practical help. More than providing historical perspective, theological reflection, and practical lessons, it shows readers how to emulate the grace and truth of Jesus Christ in relating to the Catholic people whom they love.

Book excerpt: The annual Lenten pilgrimage to dozens of Rome’s most striking churches is a sacred tradition dating back almost two millennia, to the earliest days of Christianity. Along this historic spiritual pathway, today’s pilgrims confront the mysteries of the Christian faith through a program of biblical and early Christian readings amplified by some of the greatest art and architecture of western civilization. In Roman Pilgrimage, bestselling theologian and papal biographer George Weigel, art historian Elizabeth Lev, and photographer Stephen Weigel lead readers through this unique religious and aesthetic journey with magnificent photographs and revealing commentaries on the pilgrimage’s liturgies, art, and architecture. Through reflections on each day’s readings about faith and doubt, heroism and weakness, self-examination and conversion, sin and grace, Rome’s familiar sites take on a new resonance. And along that same historical path, typically unexplored treasures—artifacts of ancient history and hidden artistic wonders—appear in their original luster, revealing new dimensions of one of the world’s most intriguing and multi-layered cities. A compelling guide to the Eternal City, the Lenten Season, and the itinerary of conversion that is Christian life throughout the year, Roman Pilgrimage reminds readers that the imitation of Christ through faith, hope, and love is the template of all true discipleship, as the exquisite beauty of the Roman station churches invites reflection on the deepest truths of Christianity.

Catholicism Today: An Introduction to the Contemporary Catholic Church aims to familiarize its readers with contemporary Catholicism. The book is designed to address common misconceptions and frequently-asked questions regarding the Church, its teachings, and the lived experience of Catholics in modern societies worldwide. Opening with a concise historical overview of Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular, the text explores the core beliefs and rituals that define Catholicism in practice, the organization of the Church and the Catholic calendar, as well as the broad question of what it means to be Catholic in a variety of cultural contexts. The book ends with a discussion of the challenges facing the Church both now and in the coming decades. Also included are two short appendices on Eastern Catholicism and Catholicism in the United States.

Book excerpt: Reflections is a significant glimpse of my young life experiences with aspects of hypocrisies, morality and guile between my dysfunctional Italian family and my Roman Catholic religious upbringing. It contains a large amount of undisclosed events that transpired daily within my life and community. These daily issues and transgressions directly affected my journey to who I am today. In my mother's family, the experiences ranged from lies, deceit, thievery and incest. My religious upbringing experiences ranged from deceitfulness, molestation to extortion. While experiences with both were very similar, they were catapulted by the era of my youth. The 1960s opened many doors previously kept closed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are times when the absolute truth must be told, and for me, this is such a time, even though I know that there will be a huge backlash against me. Sometimes, we have to get into "Good Trouble" by doing the right thing. I am now in my sixties, I was raised in the Roman Catholic Tradition, I have served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for about forty years, I have been involved with the Diaconate for twelve years, and I have been an Ordained Permanent Deacon for almost seven years now. I feel compelled to write this because the truth must be told, and I do this with the hope that positive constructive change can be made. During my life, but particularly during these past seven years I have experienced first-hand the pride, ego, gall, selfishness, lack of self-examination, and blindness of the Roman Catholic Church: an institution that was given the commission to Love and share the Good News, but has instead been a weapon of oppression and terror against so many. It breaks my heart to share these conclusions with you, but I must speak out on behalf of the many persons that have been victimized by the Roman Catholic Church.
