Book Philosophy as a Way of Life

Download or read book Philosophy as a Way of Life written by Michael Chase and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy as a Way of Life This unique collection of essays on the late Pierre Hadot’s revolutionary methodological approach to studying and practicing philosophy explores Hadot’s primary conviction that philosophy itself goes beyond solving puzzles and analyzing abstract arguments. Hadot believed that philosophy is a key part of humanity’s search for happiness, that it can transform our perception of the world, and thus can alter our very mode of being. His argument that the goal of philosophy is to shift our focus away from our habitual obsession with individuality, and to embrace universality and objectivity, has resonated with thinkers across the Academy – and outside it. Offering genuinely interdisciplinary analysis of Hadot’s work and philosophical practice, this volume includes papers written from a gamut of philosophical, historical, and geographical perspectives. Articles address issues in the history of philosophy from Pythagoras to Descartes, by way of Islamic thought, thus corresponding to Hadot’s view of the importance of philologically based analysis of ancient texts and historical contexts. Others study the presence of ideas related to, or influenced by, Hadot in contemporary thought, from Wittgenstein to Leonard Nelson, analytic philosophy, and French postmodernism. The result is a wide-ranging publication pointing to an additional “third way” alongside the traditional approaches of Continental and analytic philosophy, one that expands our horizons with secular spiritual exercises designed to enable us to be in a fuller, more authentic way.

Book Undoing Border Imperialism

Download or read book Undoing Border Imperialism written by Harsha Walia and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Harsha Walia has played a central role in building some of North America’s most innovative, diverse, and effective new movements. That this brilliant organizer and theorist has found time to share her wisdom in this book is a tremendous gift to us all.”—Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine Undoing Border Imperialism combines academic discourse, lived experiences of displacement, and movement-based practices into an exciting new book. By reformulating immigrant rights movements within a transnational analysis of capitalism, labor exploitation, settler colonialism, state building, and racialized empire, it provides the alternative conceptual frameworks of border imperialism and decolonization. Drawing on the author’s experiences in No One Is Illegal, this work offers relevant insights for all social movement organizers on effective strategies to overcome the barriers and borders within movements in order to cultivate fierce, loving, and sustainable communities of resistance striving toward liberation. The author grounds the book in collective vision, with short contributions from over twenty organizers and writers from across North America. Harsha Walia is a South Asian activist, writer, and popular educator rooted in emancipatory movements and communities for over a decade. Praise for Undoing Border Imperialism: “Border imperialism is an apt conceptualization for capturing the politics of massive displacement due to capitalist neoglobalization. Within the wealthy countries, Canada’s No One Is Illegal is one of the most effective organizations of migrants and allies. Walia is an outstanding organizer who has done a lot of thinking and can write—not a common combination. Besides being brilliantly conceived and presented, this book is the first extended work on immigration that refuses to make First Nations sovereignty invisible.”—Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz, author of Indians of the Americas and Blood on the Border “Harsha Walia’s Undoing Border Imperialism demonstrates that geography has certainly not ended, and nor has the urge for people to stretch out our arms across borders to create our communities. One of the most rewarding things about this book is its capaciousness—astute insights that emerge out of careful organizing linked to the voices of a generation of strugglers, trying to find their own analysis to build their own movements to make this world our own. This is both a manual and a memoir, a guide to the world and a guide to the organizer's heart.”—Vijay Prashad, author of The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World “This book belongs in every wannabe revolutionary’s war backpack. I addictively jumped all over its contents: a radical mixtape of ancestral wisdoms to present-day grounded organizers theorizing about their own experiences. A must for me is Walia’s decision to infuse this volume’s fight against border imperialism, white supremacy, and empire with the vulnerability of her own personal narrative. This book is a breath of fresh air and offers an urgently needed movement-based praxis. Undoing Border Imperialism is too hot to be sitting on bookshelves; it will help make the revolution.”—Ashanti Alston, Black Panther elder and former political prisoner

It is a practical possibility for corporations to report, chart and analyse every action, transaction and click that happens inside and outside their business. They explode the myth that good decisions need only be informed ones through an examination into how business really make choices. They lay bare the poverty of decision making processes in today’s corporate world and offer fresh and fascinating insight into how social tools are providing new sources of information, how they are challenging hierarchy and how they are providing opportunities for growth and agility through aligned and inclusive decision making. Book Fashion Industry Copes with Covid 19 A Legal Technological and Sociological Reflection

Download or read book Fashion Industry Copes with Covid 19 A Legal Technological and Sociological Reflection written by Marlena Jankowska and published by Instytut Prawa Gospodarczego Sp. z o.o.. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic has halted the global economy and forced its reorganization on many levels. This phenomenon caused a shock, the effects of which will be felt for a long time both on the micro and macro scale. Creative industries, including the fashion and design industries (Textile, Clothing, Leather, and Footwear, TCLF) that are the subject of this publication, are struggling to maintain normal levels of production, employment, financial liquidity. They must additionally confront new challenges in the areas of intellectual property rights and their approach to the e-commerce world. Businesses found themselves faced with an uncertain future and new obstacles, but also with opportunities. These challenges now affect the traditionally fastpaced fashion sector, which has been driven for many years by consumers’ desire for ever more design and by the industry’s own thirst for profit. In the Polish perspective, it should also be borne in mind that, according to the report of PKO Bank Polski in 2019, the clothing industry in Poland showed an upward trend, ranking the country in 8th place in Europe by size of the clothing sector in 2017. As for the entrepreneurs making clothing, in 2017 there were 12,700 of them, placing Poland third in Europe. Finally, for employment, in the same year in Poland, 85,000 were employed in the clothing sector, which was the 5th place in the European ranking. These statistics clearly demonstrate why this sector requires closer analysis in these changed times, including a refreshed SWOT analysis taking account of the new reality. Given this situation, the Center for Design, Fashion and Advertising Law of the University of Silesia initiated research to determine how the clothing sector in Poland is coping and how the legal environment interacts with the Covid challenges. Thanks to a joint effort of scientists and legal practitioners, this publication was created consisting of 39 chapters grouped into the following 12 parts: Social and legal context, International and regulatory context, Product safety, Contracts, Copyright law, Design law and trademark law, Technology law, Unfair competition law, Labour law, Fine arts market, Sustainable Development, E-commerce. The editors would like to thank all of the authors for their efforts examining the development trends in the TCLF sector and for contributing the immeasurable amounts of energy and understanding that allowed us to complete this project. This book is the result of the authors’ significant commitment. Editors would like to give special thanks to Śląski Holding Przemysłowy that shared the company’s expertise about their two large industrial production plants employing over 500 employees, which kept working in a continuous operation system, without a single case of infection by COVID-19. We are grateful to the institutions that undertook honorary patronage of our initiative. Words of thanks go also to the strategic, content and media partners. The premiere of the publication will take place in conjunction with a music premiere, details of which can be found on the cover.
