Book Reflections in the Stream

Download or read book Reflections in the Stream written by Spiros Frangos and published by . This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ty Karos is a young doctor at a New York City hospital. While treating a dying patient, he is exposed to hepatitis C, a life-threatening virus which causes liver damage. The event triggers anxious, hopeless thoughts as Ty struggles with the premise of his own mortality. His Epicurean beliefs and principles, which he has strictly adhered to and drawn strength from over the years, are challenged by this new obstacle, as he leans on his mentor Dr. Hobbes for guidance. Ty reasons that something, or rather someone, is missing from his life- Miranda, a long lost love he met in the Cycladic islands a decade earlier. Hoping she might somehow aid his recovery, he locates her and the two re-unite. Throughout his spiritual journey, Ty questions how best to live, the value of love, and what follows death. In the end, it is these enduring experiences in Ty's troubled life which emerge as his principal reflections in the stream.

Book Inspirations Thoughts and Reflections for Life

Download or read book Inspirations Thoughts and Reflections for Life written by Markus Leyacker-Schatzl and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2008 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Inspirations'... Do we not all long for inspiration in our lives? In a time where life and society are becoming ever faster? A time in which consumerism and entertainment are often superficial and spiritless? Who or what really still inspires us today? Truly inspiring things have become so rare that when they do come our way, we usually immediately notice them. Sometimes we do not recognize inspiration and regard it as 'corny' because it no longer fits into our seemingly superficial world. 'Thoughts & Reflections'... We have hardly any time for these nowadays anymore, or rather often believe not to have the time for contemplating life, certain things and their relationships. But is this the right way? We run through life like lemmings. The fact that we meet many familiar faces along the way, makes us feel we are on the right path, in the right direction... Without inspiration, without reflection... simply running... Let yourself be inspired by this book!

Book excerpt: Judith Early came to Balsam Ridge, as a privileged only child of affluent Boston parents to locate the love of her life. A decade has passed transforming her from a pampered young woman to that of a loving wife, a loyal friend, and a competent nurse with her husband Dr. Jim Bradley. The journey from seeing herself as a short-term visitor to putting down deep roots of contentment in this isolated, mountain community was not without struggle. Now, facing one of those defining moments, without warning Judiths contented life is tragically uprooted overnight. Like the mountain streams when encountering those unmovable boulders, she must now find a new course in moving forward. Where will she go? What will she do? There is nothing left. It would seem even God has abandoned her.

Book Life Is Short And So Is This Book

Download or read book Life Is Short And So Is This Book written by Peter Atkins and published by peter atkins. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is short. You can, if you work hard and are lucky, get more of almost anything, but you can't get more time. Time only goes one way. The average American has a lifespan of less than 30,000 days. So how you choose to live matters. That's the topic of this book. I don't pretend to have all the answers. I'm still learning every day, and many of the good ideas here I've picked up from other people either directly or by reading. But this is what's worked for me. Like life, this book is short. Many books I read could communicate their ideas in fewer pages. So I've tried to be brief in line with the wise person who noted: "If I'd had more time I would have written a shorter letter". I don't think brevity implies lack of content. The concepts here have improved the quality of my life, and I hope they're useful to you as well. Using these concepts, I have created a life I love. My job doesn't feel like work. I love and respect the people with whom I spend time. And I'm also passionate about my life outside work. I've learned how to create a balance that makes me happy between work and other interests, including my family, friends and exercise. Sadly I think that's rare. And yet, while I know I'm lucky, most people can work towards those goals in their own lives. My interest in making the most of my life began when I was just starting college, but when I was in my mid-thirties a boss I admired died of cancer. He was young. He had a great wife; he had three young children; he had a fantastic career -- he had everything in life. He just didn't have enough time. So, while I'd often thought about how to get the most out of life, the death of someone so young and vital increased my sense of urgency to act on it. One of the things I've always wanted to do was to work for myself. As a result, I left an exciting job at Microsoft in 2001 amidst the Internet bust to found the investing firm I now run. It was hard to do, both financially and emotionally. When I left Microsoft, many people - friends, family, and even some of the press - thought I was deluding myself to start a fund focused on Internet-related companies during a market crash. A press quote from the time said: "Call him a little crazy. Call him a little nuts." I'd never seen that type of coverage before. And, in a sense, the press was right; the business wasn't easy to start. Fortunately, from a vantage point of ten years down the road, it's worked out quite well. A key part of my job is reading and thinking about a broad variety of topics. So writing this book was relatively easy. It's even easier to read. But, like many things in life, actually executing each day on these concepts is extremely difficult. With thanks to Thomas Edison, life is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Even so, I hope you have fun perspiring. Peter Atkins Seattle, WA December, 2010

Book Reflections on Aesthetic Judgment and other Essays

Download or read book Reflections on Aesthetic Judgment and other Essays written by Professor Benjamin Tilghman and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Tilghman has been a leading commentator on analytic philosophy for many years. This book brings together his most significant and influential work on aesthetics. Spanning a period of thirty years and covering topics in aesthetics from literature to painting, the collection traces the development of Tilghman's two principal themes; a rejection of philosophical theory as a way of resolving problems about our understanding and appreciation of art and the importance of the representation and presentation of the human and human concerns in art. Tilghman is profoundly influenced by the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein and his work is informed throughout by his conception and practice of philosophy. Written with exceptional clarity and with many references to original work in both painting and literature, this collection will be an invaluable resource not only for professional philosophers but for those working in the arts generally, art historians, critics and literary theorists.

Book Musings of a Meandering Stream

Download or read book Musings of a Meandering Stream written by Donald Redheffer and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speak the truth and let the profit go; For those who seek to please, reap as they sow. A SAMPLING FROM The Musings of a Meandering Stream To admit error openly and without hesitation brings an authenticity that being correct can never provide. Resentment of authority is the inevitable response to a world where the unfit with rare exceptions rise to power. Nature and nurture contrive to make us one of a kind, and yet we strive to be one of the many. Creativity seldom survives the standardized tests of life. Whom do we believe? Censure's sincerity may be suspect, but flattery rarely escapes its desire to please. Culture writes its indelible message on our tabula rasa, capturing us for life. Time shapes recollections to serve our needs. Virtue becomes vice when it is merely adopted as effective strategy. Those who go the wrong way down the one-way streets of life are far less dangerous than the thoughtless majority, whose mindless adherence to prevalent views of the moment is uncorrupted by evidence to the contrary. The tender touch of a hand can express the most profound feelings of love and longing. What is hell but immortality without love. Memory evokes a creative portrait of the past. Neutrality in the face of evil is no virtue.
