Book excerpt: In Reflections in the Dark Room: The Black Essays, author Richard Kenyada examines the rich mosaic of contemporary African American culture from politics, race and war, to love, self-reliance and personal responsibility. With the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States, Kenyadas latest work signals both a wake-up call and a challenge to ante up. This book serves as a celebration of how far we have come, and a detailed map charting how far we have yet to go. But even of greater significance is the discovery that we have come one step closer to choosing the black doll and being proud of our choice.

Book In the Darkroom

Download or read book In the Darkroom written by Susan Faludi and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW'S 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR WINNER OF THE KIRKUS PRIZE From the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author of Backlash, comes In the Darkroom, an astonishing confrontation with the enigma of her father and the larger riddle of identity consuming our age. “In the summer of 2004 I set out to investigate someone I scarcely knew, my father. The project began with a grievance, the grievance of a daughter whose parent had absconded from her life. I was in pursuit of a scofflaw, an artful dodger who had skipped out on so many things—obligation, affection, culpability, contrition. I was preparing an indictment, amassing discovery for a trial. But somewhere along the line, the prosecutor became a witness.” So begins Susan Faludi’s extraordinary inquiry into the meaning of identity in the modern world and in her own haunted family saga. When the feminist writer learned that her 76-year-old father—long estranged and living in Hungary—had undergone sex reassignment surgery, that investigation would turn personal and urgent. How was this new parent who identified as “a complete woman now” connected to the silent, explosive, and ultimately violent father she had known, the photographer who’d built his career on the alteration of images? Faludi chases that mystery into the recesses of her suburban childhood and her father’s many previous incarnations: American dad, Alpine mountaineer, swashbuckling adventurer in the Amazon outback, Jewish fugitive in Holocaust Budapest. When the author travels to Hungary to reunite with her father, she drops into a labyrinth of dark histories and dangerous politics in a country hell-bent on repressing its past and constructing a fanciful—and virulent—nationhood. The search for identity that has transfixed our century was proving as treacherous for nations as for individuals. Faludi’s struggle to come to grips with her father’s metamorphosis takes her across borders—historical, political, religious, sexual--to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you “choose,” or is it the very thing you can’t escape?

Book excerpt: A philosophical look at the twisted, high-tech near-future of the sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror, offering a glimpse of the darkest reflections of the human condition in digital technology Black Mirror―the Emmy-winning Netflix series that holds up a dark, digital mirror of speculative technologies to modern society—shows us a high-tech world where it is all too easy to fall victim to ever-evolving forms of social control. In Black Mirror and Philosophy, original essays written by a diverse group of scholars invite you to peer into the void and explore the philosophical, ethical, and existential dimensions of Charlie Brooker’s sinister stories. The collection reflects Black Mirror’s anthology structure by pairing a chapter with every episode in the show’s five seasons—including an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure analysis of Bandersnatch—and concludes with general essays that explore the series’ broader themes. Chapters address questions about artificial intelligence, virtual reality, surveillance, privacy, love, death, criminal behavior, and politics, including: Have we given social media too much power over our lives? Could heaven really, one day, be a place on Earth? Should criminal justice and punishment be crowdsourced? What rights should a “cookie” have? Immersive, engaging, and experimental, Black Mirror and Philosophy navigates the intellectual landscape of Brooker’s morality plays for the modern world, where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.

Book excerpt: How do you describe the world around you? How do you make sense of it all? For me, I use the written word. Soul Reflections is my diary of poetry I started at the age of twelve. These poems embody the myriad words and feelings stored in my heart, in my spirit, and in my soul; these poems represent a contemplative introspection of the myriad of thoughts, beliefs, and opinions locked away in my conscious and subconscious mind. In this book, I have included poems of happiness, pain, grief, and joy. With each turn of the page, you will experience poems addressing the human condition, the composition of my world, social and political change, and my philosophy of life. Soul Reflections is a testament to my ongoing dialogue with God and my exploration of Christianity and theology.

  • Author : Julie Park

Book excerpt: "In what kinds of spaces do we become most aware of the thoughts in our own heads? My Dark Room is a book about the intimate sites of inner experience in eighteenth-century England and their role in the rise both of interiority and the novel. Julie Park considers sites such as grottos, cottages, closets, and especially the camera obscura, that beguiling enclosure into which the outside world is projected through a lens. This type of "dark room" and the projections within it serve Park as a paradigm for the fleeting states of interiority that eighteenth-century figures felt compelled to generate and experience. Park integrates material analyses of these "interior" spaces with close readings of novelistic and proto-novelistic texts. Taken together, these case studies amount to a fresh narrative of the novel's development as a genre of interiority from 1650 to 1811. They include Andrew Marvell's country house poem, Upon Appleton House; Margaret Cavendish's loosely fictional letters about domestic life, Sociable Letters, and the utopian fantasy/critique of the new science, The Blazing World; and Alexander Pope's long poem, Eloisa to Abelard. Park's innovative method of "spatial formalism" reveals how physical settings enable psychic interiors to achieve vitality in fictive and real lives"--

Book Opticks or a Treatise of the Reflections Refracections and Colours of Light

Download or read book Opticks or a Treatise of the Reflections Refracections and Colours of Light written by Sir Isaac Newton and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the ensuing Discourse about Light was written at the Desire of some Gentlemen of the Royal-Society, in the Year 1675, and then sent to their Secretary, and read at their Meetings, and the rest was added about twelve Years after to complete the Theory; except the third Book, and the last Proposition of the Second, which were since put together out of scatter'd Papers. To avoid being engaged in Disputes about these Matters, I have hitherto delayed the printing, and should still have delayed it, had not the Importunity of Friends prevailed upon me. If any other Papers writ on this Subject are got out of my Hands they are imperfect, and were perhaps written before I had tried all the Experiments here set down, and fully satisfied my self about the Laws of Refractions and Composition of Colours. I have here publish'd what I think proper to come abroad, wishing that it may not be translated into another Language without my Consent. The Crowns of Colours, which sometimes appear about the Sun and Moon, I have endeavoured to give an Account of; but for want of sufficient Observations leave that Matter to be farther examined. The Subject of the Third Book I have also left imperfect, not having tried all the Experiments which I intended when I was about these Matters, nor repeated some of those which I did try, until I had satisfied my self about all their Circumstances. To communicate what I have tried, and leave the rest to others for farther Enquiry, is all my Design in publishing these Papers. In a Letter written to Mr. Leibnitz in the year 1679, and published by Dr. Wallis, I mention'd a Method by which I had found some general Theorems about squaring Curvilinear Figures, or comparing them with the Conic Sections, or other the simplest Figures with which they may be compared.

Book Mirror by Design

Download or read book Mirror by Design written by Pamela Heyne and published by . This book was released on 1996-04-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She begins with an intriguing tour through the history of the mirror, from its origins in prehistory right up to the present. With the help of 200 spectacular photographs, she demonstrates the many remarkable ways in which mirror has been used over the past three centuries to transform spaces of every size and shape. Using dozens of examples, ranging from the Palace at Versailles to a modern shoe store in New York City, she describes techniques developed by architects and designers to alter perspectives and change the way people respond to both private and public spaces. Ms. Heyne explores the use of mirror in a variety of settings - from bedrooms, living rooms, exercise rooms, and nurseries, to restaurants, lobbies, clothing stores, and hospitals. She offers valuable technical advice on the uses and misuses of mirror in a wide variety of settings and summarizes what is known about the psychological impact of mirror in each setting.
