Book A Stranger to Myself

Download or read book A Stranger to Myself written by Willy Peter Reese and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2005-11-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Stranger to Myself: The Inhumanity of War, Russia 1941-44 is the haunting memoir of a young German soldier on the Russian front during World War II. Willy Peter Reese was only twenty years old when he found himself marching through Russia with orders to take no prisoners. Three years later he was dead. Bearing witness to--and participating in--the atrocities of war, Reese recorded his reflections in his diary, leaving behind an intelligent, touching, and illuminating perspective on life on the eastern front. He documented the carnage perpetrated by both sides, the destruction which was exacerbated by the young soldiers' hunger, frostbite, exhaustion, and their daily struggle to survive. And he wrestled with his own sins, with the realization that what he and his fellow soldiers had done to civilians and enemies alike was unforgivable, with his growing awareness of the Nazi policies toward Jews, and with his deep disillusionment with himself and his fellow men. An international sensation, A Stranger to Myself is an unforgettable account of men at war.

Book Decision in the West

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert Castel
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 1992-11-02
  • ISBN : 070060748X
  • Pages : 688 pages

Download or read book Decision in the West written by Albert Castel and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 1992-11-02 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a skirmish on June 28, 1864, a truce is called so the North can remove their dead and wounded. For two hours, Yankees and Rebels mingle, with some of the latter even assisting the former in their grisly work. Newspapers are exchanged. Northern coffee is swapped for Southern tobacco. Yanks crowd around two Rebel generals, soliciting and obtaining autographs. As they part, a Confederate calls to a Yankee, "I hope to miss you, Yank, if I happen to shoot in your direction." "May I, never hit you Johnny if we fight again," comes the reply. The reprieve is short. A couple of months, dozens of battles, and more than 30,000 casualties later, the North takes Atlanta. One of the most dramatic and decisive episodes of the Civil War, the Atlanta Campaign was a military operation carried out on a grand scale across a spectacular landscape that pitted some of the war's best (and worst) general against each other. In Decision in the West, Albert Castel provides the first detailed history of the Campaign published since Jacob D. Cox's version appeared in 1882. Unlike Cox, who was a general in Sherman's army, Castel provides an objective perspective and a comprehensive account based on primary and secondary sources that have become available in the past 110 years. Castel gives a full and balanced treatment to the operations of both the Union and Confederate armies from the perspective of the common soldiers as well as the top generals. He offers new accounts and analyses of many of the major events of the campaign, and, in the process, corrects many long-standing myths, misconceptions, and mistakes. In particular, he challenges the standard view of Sherman's performance. Written in present tense to give a sense of immediacy and greater realism, Decision in the West demonstrates more definitively than any previous book how the capture of Atlanta by Sherman's army occurred and why it assured Northern victory in the Civil War.

Book Occupied Vicksburg

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bradley R. Clampitt
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2016-10-19
  • ISBN : 0807163406
  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Occupied Vicksburg written by Bradley R. Clampitt and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, Vicksburg, Mississippi, assumed almost mythic importance in the minds of Americans: northerners and southerners, soldier and civilian. The city occupied a strategic and commanding position atop rocky cliffs above the Mississippi River, from which it controlled the great waterway. As a result, Federal forces expended enormous effort, expense, and troops in many attempts to capture Vicksburg. The immense struggle for this southern bastion ultimately heightened its importance beyond its physical and strategic value. Its psychological significance elevated the town’s status to one of the war’s most important locations. Vicksburg’s defiance dismayed northerners and delighted Confederates, who saw command of the river as a badge of honor. Finally, after a six-week siege that involved intense military and civilian suffering amid heavy artillery bombardment, Union forces captured the “Gibraltar of the Confederacy,” ending the bloody campaign. While many historians have told the story of the fall of Vicksburg, Bradley R. Clampitt is the first to offer a comprehensive examination of life there after its capture by the United States military. In the war-ravaged town, indiscriminate hardships befell soldiers and civilians alike during the last two years of the conflict and immediately after its end. In Occupied Vicksburg, Clampitt shows that following the Confederate withdrawal, Federal forces confronted myriad challenges in the city including filth, disease, and a never-ending stream of black and white refugees. Union leaders also responded to the pressures of newly free people and persistent guerrilla violence in the surrounding countryside. Detailing the trials of blacks, whites, northerners, and southerners, Occupied Vicksburg stands as a significant contribution to Civil War studies, adding to our understanding of military events and the home front. Clampitt’s astute research provides insight into the very nature of the war and enhances existing scholarship on the experiences of common people during America’s most cataclysmic event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academy Award–winning actress, producer, and entrepreneur Reese Witherspoon invites you into her world, where she infuses the southern style, parties, and traditions she loves with contemporary flair and charm. Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said that a combination of beauty and strength made southern women “whiskey in a teacup.” We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, she said, but inside we’re strong and fiery. Reese’s southern heritage informs her whole life, and she loves sharing the joys of southern living with practically everyone she meets. She takes the South wherever she goes with bluegrass, big holiday parties, and plenty of Dorothea’s fried chicken. It’s reflected in how she entertains, decorates her home, and makes holidays special for her kids—not to mention how she talks, dances, and does her hair (in these pages, you will learn Reese’s fail-proof, only slightly insane hot-roller technique). Reese loves sharing Dorothea’s most delicious recipes as well as her favorite southern traditions, from midnight barn parties to backyard bridal showers, magical Christmas mornings to rollicking honky-tonks. It’s easy to bring a little bit of Reese’s world into your home, no matter where you live. After all, there’s a southern side to every place in the world, right?

Book Reviews in Animal Welfare

  • Author : Barbara Padalino
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release : 2024-10-04

Download or read book Reviews in Animal Welfare written by Barbara Padalino and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare research is growing, although some topics have been studied more in deep than others. Pet species and farm animal welfare are better studied than exotic and wildlife species. However, there are still many gaps in knowledge related to animal welfare. For instance, there is still the need to understand how to measure positive welfare, or how to aggregate the different feelings and experiences that an animal feels during the different stages of life. New technologies have been proposed to monitor the welfare of animals providing more objective data, but there are still very few tools that have been validated. This Research Topic aims to collect reviews of the literature on animal welfare topics, related to all species, from companion animals to livestock, and from laboratory animals to wild animals. The invited reviews, metanalysis of the literature, should highlight the acquired knowledge and the current gaps of knowledge within this field. Our main goal is to identify which topics were devoted more scientific attention in recent years concerning animal welfare and identify which topics are still overlooked by current research.
