Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when you start to lose all hope when facing your demons? Do you give in, or do you fight? This book is about confronting whatever demons you may have in your life and not only fighting them, but keeping them at bay—forever! My demon was weight control, and I was knocking on death’s doorstep when I decided that this behavior had to change—and change fast. I love life too much to just give in to my weaknesses. I needed to show the same courage that I used as a former public school superintendent when confronted with an educational challenge. But just confronting was not enough . . . I needed to act. And as a result of my research and experience, I am also able to help others by developing the “Bathke Matrix” to help you fight your own personal demons. This book is designed to help those of us that need some guidance, assistance, and positive reinforcement when the challenging times seem to overwhelm us. This book made a positive difference in my life. It will make a positive difference in yours.

Download or read book Grandpa Benjamin written by Uriah J. Fields and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A triumph of the imagination and a masterpiece of storytelling, Grandpa Benjamin is narrated by Grandpa Benjamin himself. He told his grandson this story that he had been told by his mother about their ancestors beginning with the year 1776 when his great-great-great grandparents, Baatsi and Ashanti Nkrumga, were kidnapped by American slavers in Africa, separated from their two small children, and enslaved in America. This is also the story about Grandpa Benjamin and his half brother, Alexander, also born into slavery, and how they established the Zeals Community and the Zeals School in Wildflower, the place of their birth, where for several generations they and their descendants were nurtured. Their legacy continues to inspire their descendants to live productive and dignity-affirmed lives. Grandpa Benjamin, the first person in his lineage to have the surname Zeals, is a character that, even in contemporary perspective, will live in the readers imagination forever.
Download or read book The Lincoln Highway written by Amor Towles and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER More than ONE MILLION copies sold A TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick A New York Times Notable Book, and Chosen by Oprah Daily, Time, NPR, The Washington Post, Bill Gates and Barack Obama as a Best Book of the Year “Wise and wildly entertaining . . . permeated with light, wit, youth.” —The New York Times Book Review “A classic that we will read for years to come.” —Jenna Bush Hager, Read with Jenna book club “Fantastic. Set in 1954, Towles uses the story of two brothers to show that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as we might hope.” —Bill Gates “A real joyride . . . elegantly constructed and compulsively readable.” —NPR The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York. Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes. “Once again, I was wowed by Towles’s writing—especially because The Lincoln Highway is so different from A Gentleman in Moscow in terms of setting, plot, and themes. Towles is not a one-trick pony. Like all the best storytellers, he has range. He takes inspiration from famous hero’s journeys, including The Iliad, The Odyssey, Hamlet, Huckleberry Finn, and Of Mice and Men. He seems to be saying that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as an interstate highway. But, he suggests, when something (or someone) tries to steer us off course, it is possible to take the wheel.” – Bill Gates

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New and improved -- now with added goats! Welcome to advertising executive Jill Campbell's life, version 2.0. Gone are the cheating ex-husband and the chaos of New York. Brand-new features include a prestigious job at a Boston ad agency, a stronger father-daughter relationship, and a gorgeous old farmhouse. It's bliss -- until a snazzy car account evaporates, leaving her branding...beef. Un-snazzy, un-sexy beef -- which she hasn't eaten in twenty years. Talk about false advertising. Owning a two-hundred-year-old house in a one-store hamlet is not the nirvana Jill imagined, even with the addition of a dog, two needy goats, and unexpected encounters with the town's most eligible -- and probably only -- bachelor. Peace of mind sold separately. Wondering how she sold herself on this new existence, Jill forms an unlikely bond with Sarah Watson, a feisty twelve-year-old with an aversion to training bras, makeup, and all the trappings that supposedly make sixth grade worthwhile. While Sarah teaches Jill the basics of home maintenance and animal husbandry, Jill helps Sarah deal with impending womanhood. And as men start to complicate matters, every idea Jill ever had about love and advertising gets turned on its head. Suddenly, her life looks nothing like the picture on the box, but it could turn out to be exactly what she didn't know she needed.

A form of government refers to the set of political systems and institutions that make up the organization of a specific government. Government of any kind affects every human activity in many important ways. For this reason, political scientists generally argue that government should not be studied by itself; but should be studied along with anthropology, economics, history, philosophy, and sociology.

Download or read book A Generic Life written by Steven Rivera and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coming-of-age and picaresque story, with a continuum of knee-jerk humor and descriptive details, sees its way through the unpleasantness of abuse and not having any permanent roots or family. Readers follow the main character from childhood to adulthood as he is shifted from multiple homes and states. Throughout the character's journey, the persona he develops is born from innocence, natural-given talents, and his desires to make happiness exist. Although the story begins with horrific abuse, the reader soon realizes that this is not the focus of the book but rather the beginning of a quest. The author's intent is for readers to question "What happened?" Some questions cannot be answered and remain a mystery. The coming-of-age and rite-of-passage events remind readers of their own stories to tell and compare. A collage of images and feelings will take readers back to their childhood memories as they shadow the main character. The happiness, bitterness, and humor are fueled by extreme turning points and multiple changes of ideologies, cultures, and idiosyncrasies that molded the main character into a psychedelic hodgepodge of personality. Readers will take on all the emotional elements, experiences, and constant changes as they were happening. They uncover the answers and realizations of feeling alone and unwanted until they are warmed and tickled by the character's way of viewing the world. The title of the book and each chapter reflects the constant changes during the main character's life. The theme, style, and language are comparable to Angela's Ashes, A Child Called "It,", and I'm Nobody's Child. It is not a woe-is-me book. The detailed descriptions allow readers to feel the despair of what it is like being an anomaly but, more importantly, to enjoy and have fun learning about typical boy fantasies, thoughts, rationales, and the angst and anxieties of growing up.
