Book Reductions in Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Reductions in Organic Chemistry written by Milos Hudlicky and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Milos Hudlicky's meticulous notes and literature studies, this book is a compilation of the types of reductions undergone by the various classes of organic compounds. No survey of a topic as broad as reduction could ever be complete, but Hudlicky gives us a comprehensive cross section of the methods, reactants, and products. Reductions are discussed according to what bond or functional group is reduced by different reagents. Special attention is paid to selective reductions that are suitable for the reduction of one particular type of bond or function without affecting other bonds or functions present in the same molecule. Special emphasis is placed on enantioselective and diastereoselective reductions effected both by chiral reagents and by microorganisms. Reducing agents are correlated with both the starting compounds and the products of reduction. Discussions of methods, mechanisms, stereochemistry, and scopes of reducing agents are included. Selected laboratory procedures demonstrate the main reduction techniques. Correlation tables and thorough author and subject indexes make this book easy to use. This book is an essential reference for teachers and research scientists in organic chemistry and a help to graduate students.

(ii) Reduction of X=Y systems, divided into three chapters, covering the reduction of such groups as nitro, azo, and the various kinds of P=O and S=O groups. (iii) Reduction of C=C and C≡C, divided into 12 chapters based on the method of reduction, with aromatic, heteroaromatic, and conjugated systems treated separately, and including an extensive discussion of hydrometallation. (iv) Reduction of single bonds, C-X to C-H, in eight chapters, including the hydrogenolysis of the various kinds of C-X bonds, the reduction of epoxides, and the reduction of vinyl derivatives to alkenes. Each chapter includes a discussion of chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity, wherever it is appropriate, and most include advice on the reagent of choice, and the mechanistic basis of the various methods of reduction. In short, it is, within the space available, as near to a comprehensive account of reduction in organic chemistry as one could hope for.

Book Electrochemical Reactions and Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Electrochemical Reactions and Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry written by J. Grimshaw and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemical reactions make significant contributions to organic synthesis either in the laboratory or on an industrial scale. These methods have the potential for developing more "green" chemical synthesis. Over recent years, modern investigations have clarified the mechanisms of important organic electrochemical reactions. Progress has also been made in controlling the reactivity of intermediates through either radical or ionic pathways. Now is the time to gather all the electrochemical work into a textbook. As an essential addition to the armory of synthetic organic chemists, electrochemical reactions give results not easily achieved by many other chemical routes. This book presents a logical development of reactions and mechanisms in organic electrochemistry at a level suited to research scientists and final year graduate students. It forms an excellent starting point from which synthetic organic chemists, in both academia and industry, can appreciate uses for electrochemical methods in their own work. The book is also a reference guide to the literature.
