Download or read book Riverine Ecosystem Management written by Stefan Schmutz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book surveys the frontier of scientific river research and provides examples to guide management towards a sustainable future of riverine ecosystems. Principal structures and functions of the biogeosphere of rivers are explained; key threats are identified, and effective solutions for restoration and mitigation are provided. Rivers are among the most threatened ecosystems of the world. They increasingly suffer from pollution, water abstraction, river channelisation and damming. Fundamental knowledge of ecosystem structure and function is necessary to understand how human acitivities interfere with natural processes and which interventions are feasible to rectify this. Modern water legislation strives for sustainable water resource management and protection of important habitats and species. However, decision makers would benefit from more profound understanding of ecosystem degradation processes and of innovative methodologies and tools for efficient mitigation and restoration. The book provides best-practice examples of sustainable river management from on-site studies, European-wide analyses and case studies from other parts of the world. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of aquatic ecology, river system functioning, conservation and restoration, to postgraduate students, to institutions involved in water management, and to water related industries.
Download or read book Safety of Existing Dams written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by civil engineers, dam safety officials, dam owners, geologists, hydraulic engineers, and risk analysts, this handbook is the first cooperative attempt to provide practical solutions to dam problems within the financial constraints faced by dam owners. It provides hands-on information for identifying and remedying common defects in concrete and masonry dams, embankment dams, reservoirs, and related structures. It also includes procedures for monitoring dams and collecting and analyzing data. Case histories demonstrate economical solutions to specific problems.
Download or read book Reservoir Sedimentation written by G.W. Annandale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on reservoir sedimentation in recent years has been aimed mainly at water resources projects in developing countries. These countries, especially in Africa, often have to cope with long droughts, flash floods and severe erosion problems. Large reservoir capacities are required to capture water provided by flash floods so as to ensure the supply of water in periods of drought. The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir basin, leading to fast deterioration of a costly investment. Accurate forecasting of reservoir behaviour is therefore of the utmost importance. This book fills a gap in current literature by providing in one volume comprehensive coverage of techniques required to practically investigate the effects sediment deposition in reservoirs has on the viability of water resources projects. Current techniques for practically estimating sediment yield from catchments, estimating the volume of sediment expected to deposit in reservoirs, predicting sediment distribution and calculating scour downstream of reservoirs are evaluated and presented. The liberal use of diagrams and graphs to explain the various techniques enhances understanding and makes practical application simple. A major feature of the book is the application of stream power theory to explain the process of reservoir sedimentation and to develop four new methods for predicting sediment distribution in reservoirs. The book is primarily directed at practising engineers involved in the planning and design of water resources projects and at post-graduate students interested in this field of study.
Download or read book Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs written by Dan G. Batuca and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of river dams and the storage of water have been a strategy for survival for many centuries. Reservoirs have diverse functions, providing irrigation, water supply, storage of water, flood control, navigation and power generation. The silting of a reservoir is an unavoidable process. Although it cannot be halted, silting can be slowed down and controlled by a variety of soil conservation practices and by modifying agricultural practices in the catchment area. Other methods of reducing silting include the placing of certain engineering structures in the river system and the introduction of adequate strategies of reservoir operation. Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs includes aspects such as hydraulics, sediment transport, silting, sediment distribution, calculation and prediction of silting and solutions to reservoir silting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the current issues and recent international developments in reservoir planning and operation, design and construction, monitoring and maintenance. In the light of the recent climatic changes which have seen a reduction in rainfall and resulted in water shortages, a number of pertinent subjects are examined in detail, for example the provision of new resources, evaluation of optimal operating policies, review of water supply options, sedimentation effects, the environmental aspects and the economic viability of reservoirs.

This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental protection and conservation measures have been increasing for sustainable development. The strategies for environmental goals and economical development must be compatible. Sustainable development can be achieved through the incorporation of environmental dimensions into the process of developmental activity. The improper planning and inappropriate management of the environment leads to deterioration of environmental quality, particularly water and soil quality that are being seriously affected. According to (David B. Brooks, 2002) proper mitigation measures are not taken. By the year 2025, one third of world’s population will experience sever potable water scarcity. Wise environmental management requires ability to measure, forecast, monitor, and analyze environmental trends and thereby assess the capabilities of water and land at different levels. Dougherty (1995) studied about the requirement of the adoption for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for integrated planning of land and water resources in order to avoid irreversible damage to the environment.
