Download or read book The Civilization of the Old Northwest written by Beverley W. Bond Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilization of the Old Northwest: A Study of Political, Social, and Economic Development, 1788-1812 As the title implies, my aim in this volume has been to pre sent a composite view of the civilization that arose in the formative period of the Old Northwest, between the first settlement at Marietta in 1788 and the outbreak of the War of 1812. In this quarter of a century the foundations of an American civilization were laid in this region which stretched roughly between the Ohio, the Mississippi, and the Great Lakes. At the same time an American colonial system was tested in this same area, and so successfully was it adapted to practical needs that the precedents set up in the Old Northwest, along with the distinctive civilization which developed there, were later transplanted into the Trans Mississippi country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of the Old Northwest and Its Settlement by Americans While every American is familiar with the events connected with the discovery and colonization of the eastern shores of our country, the history of the Old Northwest - that magnificent section of our country lying west of the Alleghanies and bounded by the Mississippi, the Ohio, and the Great Lakes - is comparatively unknown. It has a history as varied, as interesting, and as important as that of any other portion of the North American continent, and yet few persons realize the extent to which the events attending its early exploration, its conquest, and its settlement have determined, the destiny of our country as a whole. So far as is known to the writer, no attempt has hitherto been made to relate the story of these events in a connected order, free from extraneous details and adapted to the comprehension and tastes of younger readers. Park-man, in his monumental series of historical narratives, has told this story in connection with many others having but slight relation to the Old Northwest; Justin Winsor, in his very scholarly volumes relating to the French regime in America, has done the same. But the works of these writers are too voluminous for general readers, and being designed for mature thinkers they fail to be attractive to the majority of young people just beginning to acquire a taste for historical reading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of Montreal, on September 8, 1760, while the plains about the city were still dotted with the white tents of the victorious English and colonial troops, was indeed an event of the deepest consequence to America and to the world. By the articles of capitulation which were signed by the Marquis de Vaudreuil, Governor of New France, Canada and all its dependencies west-ward to the Mississippi passed to the British Crown. Virtually ended was the long struggle for the dominion of the New World. Open now for English occupation and settlement was that vast country lying south of the Great Lakes between the Ohio and the Mississippi - which we know as the Old Northwest - today the seat of five great commonwealths of the United States. With an ingenuity born of necessity, the French pathfinders and colonizers of the Old Northwest had chosen for their settlements sites which would serve at once the purposes of the priest, the trader, and the soldier; and with scarcely an exception these sites are as important today as when they were first selected. Four regions, chiefly, were still occupied by the French at the time of the capitulation of Montreal. The most important, as well as the most distant, of these regions was on the east bank of the Mississippi, opposite and below the present city of St. Louis, where a cluster of missions, forts, and trading-posts held the center of the tenuous line extending from Canada to Louisiana. A second was the Illinois country, centering about the citadel of St. Louis which La Salle had erected in 1682 on the summit of "Starved Rock," near the modern town of Ottawa in Illinois. A third was the valley of the Wabash, where in the early years of the eighteenth century Vincennes had become the seat of a colony commanding both the Wabash and the lower Ohio. And the fourth was the western end of Lake Erie, where Detroit, founded by the doughty Cadillac in 1701, had assumed such strength that for fifty years it had discouraged the ambitions of the English to make the Northwest theirs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Northwest, Vol. 1: With a View of the Thirteen Colonies as Constituted by the Royal Charters Save New England alone, there is no section Oi the United States embracing several States that is so distinct an historical unit, and that so readily yields to historical treat ment, as the Old Northwest. It is the part of the gteat West first discovered and colonized by the French. It was the occasion Of the final struggle for dominion between France and England in North America. It was the thea tre Of one Of the most brilliant and far-reaching military ex ploits Of the Revolution. The disposition to be made Of it at the close Of the Revolution is the most important territo rial question treated in the history Of American diplomacy. After the war, the Northwest began to assume a constantly increasing importance in the national history. It is the origi nal public domain, and the part Of the West first colonized under the authority Of the National Government. It was the first and the most important Territory ever organized by Congress. It is the only part of the United States ever under a secondary constitution like the Ordinance Of 1787. N 0 other equal part of the Union has made in one hundred years such progress along the characteristic lines of American development. Moreover, the Northwest has stood in very important relations to questions Of great national and inter national importance, as the use and ownership of the Missis. Book excerpt: Master historian Nisbet has communed with Indians, astronauts, miners, and scientists to reveal a wonderfully personal, engaging, and authoritative picture of the cultural and natural history of the Inland Northwest. --John Marzluff, author of Welcome to Subirdia and Gifts of the Crow Ancient Places is a collection of nonfiction stories about the interplay between people and the landscape where they happen to live. Drawing on a range of fresh personal research, both oral and written, author Jack Nisbet (Sources of the River, The Collector) engages some of the iconic images in Northwest history: from fossil riches to ice age floods; from the Willamette Meteorite to the 1872 Earthquake; from up-and-down mining cycles to steady rounds of tribal food gathering. Although the scale of time and space in some of the pieces is immense, individual characters still manage to leave their marks; even though the force of modern civilization sometimes seems overwhelming, small places and their key components somehow persevere. These are the genesis stories of a region. In Ancient Places, Jack Nisbet uncovers touchstones across the Pacific Northwest that reveal the symbiotic relationship of people and place in this corner of the world. xx
