Book Rediscovering Fire

Download or read book Rediscovering Fire written by Guinevere Liberty Nell and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiment with socialism in the Soviet Union was based on Marxist economic theory, which denied the universal nature of economic law. The economy became a blank slate, without markets, prices, even without money - for a time. Government had to rediscover fire - learning basics of economics over again. This historical laboratory of social science should be exploited for the lessons in basic economics that it offers. Many view Lenin as a dictator who exploited the peoples of the Soviet Union, betraying the hopes and dreams of socialism for his own benefit. Yet, Lenin wrote hundreds of books on Marxist theory, and the policies he enacted were those he promised. Despite the wealth of information available on the Soviet experiment, few have closely analyzed why it produced results different from those intended and what these lessons might mean for market economies. Based on Marxist economic theory, which denied the universality of economic laws, the Soviet Union wiped out the market and, with it, the basis for all economic knowledge. In this vacuum of economic information, planners had neither market theory nor prices to guide them. The socialist experiment was truly an experiment in eliminating the market. The Bolsheviks enacted policies based on Marxist hypotheses: nationalizing businesses and banks, setting wages according to the labor theory of value, eliminating interest and capital markets, and planning full employment. When each Marxist policy failed, the state reorganized to better implement it, tried modified versions, and only pulled back as a last resort. In this book, Guinevere Nell explores the theory and experience of the socialist experiment. In each chapter, she considers one theory put forth by socialists. She explores the ways in which the Soviet planners implemented this theory, recognized that their policies were not producing the desired results, and tried to implement reforms to combat the failures. In each chapter, she extracts certain lessons from the experience of the planners. The lessons capture the dynamic nature of the economy, something that is commonly overlooked by mainstream economists and policymakers although it has been a focus of the Austrian school of economics. Insights from the debate between socialists and Austrian economists are introduced during the discussion of the lessons at the end of each chapter. The lessons suggest that due the dynamic nature of the market, the Soviet Union could never surpass the West in economic growth. Each chapter concludes with policy examples and discussion of how the lesson can inform policies that market economies are considering. All policy examples are from current U.S. policy debate. The last lesson ties together the thrust of many disparate threads throughout the book. It makes the case that the socialist arguments were aimed at the wrong target, which is why the prescription of planning led to the opposite of what was intended. The conclusion of the book summarizes the recurring themes of reform. These lessons have relevance for all economies and for both economists and the policy-minded citizen. For example, the socialist elimination of competition provides insight into the neoclassical framework and sheds light on our common understanding of how 'competitive' certain industries are. The book is intended for the educated layperson, but should also be accessible and relevant to college students and professional economists. The book is written in plain language, with all economic terms defined.

Download or read book Money and Justice written by Leszek Niewdana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money has always represented power. For Aristotle, this power was inseparable from the exercise of justice within a community. This is why issuance of money was the prerogative of the lawful authority (government). Such a view of monetary power was widespread, and includes societies as distant as China. Over the past several centuries, however, private interests increasingly tapped into the exercise of the money power. Through gradual shifts, commercial banks have gained a legally protected right to create money through issuance of debts. The aim of this book is to unravel various layers hiding the real workings of modern money and banking systems and injustices ingrained in them. By asking what money really is, who controls it and for what purpose (why), the book provides insight into understanding of modern money and banking systems, as well as the causes of growing financialization of economies throughout the world, money manias and economic instability. The book also increases the awareness of injustices hidden in the workings of modern money and banking systems and the need for moral underpinnings of such systems. Finally, it suggests a money system which could immensely improve human, economic, and ecological conditions.

Book Business Globalization and the Common Good

Download or read book Business Globalization and the Common Good written by Henri Claude de Bettignies and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and information technology are driving the world into a new era. Is it the responsibility of business to pursue the common good - and more precisely, to participate in the construction of the global common good? This book brings together contributions from various disciplines, written by scholars who are at the forefront of this debate. It provides multiple insights into a tripartite relationship: business, globalization and the common good. It helps explain why the business sphere will probably not be in a position to ignore the common good much longer, and why this latter concept, widely ignored in today's management realm, is likely to become part of tomorrow's corporate policies and practices in the global context. Finally, this work opens up a plethora of avenues for future research, calling for the development of transdisciplinary approaches and for the elaboration of a research program embracing theoretical, empirical and spiritual perspectives to tackle this complex issue.

Book excerpt: Shouldn’t everyone receive a stake in society's wealth? Could we create a fairer world by guaranteeing income to all? What would this mean for our health, wealth, and happiness? Basic income is a revolutionary idea that guarantees regular, unconditional cash transfers from the government to all citizens. It is an acknowledgement that everyone plays a part in generating the wealth currently enjoyed by only a few and would rectify the recent breakdown in income distribution. Political parties across the world are now adopting this innovative policy and the idea generates headlines every day. Guy Standing has been at the forefront of thought surrounding basic income for the past thirty years, and in this book he covers in authoritative detail its effects on the economy, poverty, work, and labor; dissects and disproves the standard arguments against basic income; explains what we can learn from pilots across the world; and illustrates exactly why basic income has now become such an urgent necessity.

Book Initiation of the Soul

Download or read book Initiation of the Soul written by Pamela S. Alexander PhD and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are in the midst of an epic evolution in consciousness that involves a radical shift in orientation from the ego to the heart and soul. This transformative process requires a breaking down of the old form, which we are witnessing personally and collectively, to create the space for something new to emerge. As we live from the soul and express our deepest truths, we actively participate in this change. Life experiences may seem as though they're random, but in fact they have an intention, deeper meaning, and purpose, which is to facilitate this transformation within us. Everything is occurring to free us from our old beliefs, outdated ways of living, and any limiting ideas we have about life and ourselves. In INITIATION OF THE SOUL, Dr. Pamela Alexander explores the soul's journey through myth and classic fairy tales. In the initiatory mythic story of "Psyche and Amor," the goddess of love orchestrates events in order to awaken the soul from its slumber. The heroine faces challenging tasks that draw the deeper truth of the soul's inherent wholeness, freedom, and power out of the unconscious and into an embodied awareness. Dr. Alexander proceeds from there to explore fairy tales that speak to the issues that arise during the soul's emergence. These stories symbolically instruct us as to how to resolve our fears and open to love. As inner restrictions are resolved, we can embody expanded versions of ourselves and become more stable in a chaotic and uncertain world. The stories guide us to free the soul from an egoic identification, which is buffeted by the winds of change and the opinions of others, to the unshakeable ground of being within. Then, we are empowered to live in freedom and wholeness as we participate in the creation of a new world.

Book Money Magic for Beginners

Download or read book Money Magic for Beginners written by Harry Eilenstein and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money spells don't necessarily have the best reputation - quite wrongly. Why not live in abundance? There are a lot of classical methods to get money - from Jupiter talisman to sigil magic. This also works reasonably well. However, you can also be more thorough and explore why you have had too little money so far - for this you can use the horoscope, knowledge of the chakras and some other things. If by improved self-knowledge regarding money there are no more "Yes, but ..." wishes, but instead "Yes, gladly!" wishes, one's own money magic will also become more effective. But one can do it still another step more thoroughly: One can look at the own relationship to the abundance altogether and see whether something in one's own life is no longer in the center: Has the fire become polarized to power and powerlessness? The water to renunciation and gluttony? The air to lies and bossiness? The earth to poverty and gluttony? If one can dissolve these polarized extremes, truth, power, love and flourishing will again come into one's life. But even this is not the real foundation of the money theme: There is the possibility to live in trust to the world and in responsibility for the world and to connect with the world through a constantly working magic, so that abundance can flow at any time. Would you like to join us on this journey of discovery?
