Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red-Letter Days of Samuel Pepys Pepys's Diary is long, and life is short; yet those who have failed to meet the Diarist have missed a rare pleasure. Hence this volume of selected passages - red-letter days from our standpoint, if not always from his - which will serve, it is hoped, as a good introduction to such as do not know Mr. Pepys, and wish to make the acquaintance of that most original and entertaining gentleman. These selections will also serve to make him more easily accessible to the host of those who are already on good terms with him. The editor has aimed, in assembling the passages that follow, to present a sketch that is characteristic of Mr. Pepys's many-sided personality - a sketch full of vitality that will catch in its comparatively few lines the distinctive traits of its original; and he has also endeavoured to prepare a volume pleasant to have at one's elbow, and most welcome when heavier reading palls, and there is a desire to beguile the time with something at once curious and enlivening. April 1, 1661 May 8, 1662 This day my waiting at the Privy Seal comes in again. Up early among my workmen. So to the office, and went home to dinner with Sir W. Batten, and after that to the Goat tavern by Charing Cross to meet Dr. Castle, where he and I drank a pint of wine and talked about Privy Seal business. Then to the Privy Seal Office and there found Mr. Moore, but no business yet. Then to Whitefryars, and there saw part of Rule a wife and have a wife, 1 which I never saw before, but do not like it. SO to my father, and there finding a discontent between my father and mother about the maid (which my father likes and my mother dis likes), I staid till 10 at night, persuading my mother to understand herself, and that in some high words, which I was sorry for, but she is grown, poor woman, very froward. So leaving them in the same discontent I went away home, it being a brave moonshine, and to bed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. S, Vol. 2 of 4: The Diary Deciphered by Rev. J. Smith, A. M. From the Original Shorthand Ms. June et. The Duke having been a hunting to-day, and so lately come home and gone to bed, we could not see him, and we walked away. And I with Sir J. Minnes to the Strand May-pole 1 and there light out of his coach, and walked to the New Theatre,2 which, since the King's players are gone to the Royal one, is this day begun to be employed by the fencers to play prizes at. And here I come and saw the first prize I ever saw in my life: and it was between one Mathews, who did heat at all weapons, and one Westwicke, who was soundly out several times both in the head and legs, that he was all over blood: and other deadly blows they did give and take in very good earnest, till Westwicke was in a sad pickle. They fought at eight weapons, three boutes at each weapon. This being upon a private quarrel, they did it in good earnest; and I felt one of their swords, and found it to be very little, if at all. Blunter on the edge than the common swords are. Strange to see what a deal of money is flung to them both upon the stage between every boute. So, well pleased for once with this sight, I walked home. This day I hear at Court of the great plot which was lately discovered in Ireland, made among the Presbyters and others, designing to cry up the Covenant. This morning my brother's man brought me a new black baize waiste coate, faced with silke, which I put on from this day, laying by half-shirts for this winter. He brought me also my new gowne of purple shagg, trimmed with gold, very handsome also as a gift from my brother, a velvet hat, ' very fine to ride in, and the fashion, which pleases me very well, to which end, I believe, he sent it me, for he knows I had lately been angry with him. Up and to church with my wife, and at noon dined at home alone, a good calve's head boiled and dumplings, an excellent dinner methought it was. Then to church again, whither Sir W. S, Vol. 1: Jan; 1, 1660 June 4, 1660 Although the Diary of Samuel Pepys has been in the hands of the public for nearly seventy years, it has not hitherto appeared in its entirety. In the original edition of 182 5 scarcely half of the manuscript was printed. Lord Braybrooke added some passages as the various editions were published, but in the preface to his last edition he wrote: there appeared indeed no necessity to amplify or in any way to alter the text of the Diary beyond the correction of a few verbal errors and corrupt passages hitherto overlooked. Download or read book The Diary of Samuel Pepys Vol 4 of 10 written by Henry Morley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of Samuel Pepys, Vol. 4 of 10: With From His October, and an Introduction to Each Volume The Dutch War and the Dali of Clarendon are the events of history which this volume illustrates. We have the miserable close of the war, with the Dutch fleet in the Thames, London in panic, sailors unpaid, the means even of defence wanting, and the end of the monarchy looked for through the profligacy of a king who had dissipated, in his brutal pleasures, larger grants of war-money than his predecessors knew how to obtain, A shameful war is closed hurriedly by shameful peace, upon such terms as are given only to the vanquished. A shameful Court varies its dissipations with mean griping for more money to be meanly spent. A Parliament is called, and sent away again because it has appeared possible to do without it, after all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of Samuel Pepys, M. A., F. R. S: Edited, With Additions Prince will be asking now who this Pepys is, and find him to be a creature of my Lord Sandwich's, and therefore this was done only to disparage him. Anon they broke up, and Sir W. Coventry come out; so I asked his advice. He told me he had said something to salve it, which was, that his Highnesse had, he believed, rightly informed the King that the eete is come in good condition to have staid out yet longer, and have fought the enemy, but yet that Mr. Pepys his meaning might be, that, though in so good con dition, if they should come in and lie all the winter, we shall be very loth to send them to sea for another year's service with[out] great repairs. He said it would be no hurt if I went to him, and Showed him the report himself brought up from the eete, where every ship, by the Com mander's report, do need more or less, and not to mention more of Sir W. Pen for doing him a mischief. So I said I would, but do not think that all this will redound to my hurt, because the truth of what I said will soon appear. Thence, having been informed that, after all this pains, the King hath found out how to supply us with 5 or when were at this time but absolutely necessary, and we mentioned This is every day a greater and greater omen of mine. God fit us for it! Sir I. Minnes and I home (it raining) by coach, calling only on Sir G. Carteret at his lodging (who is I find troubled at my Lord Treasurer and Sir Ph. Warwicke bungling in his ao counts), and come home to supper with my father, and then all to bed. I made my brother in his cassocke to say grace this day, but I like his voice so ill that I begin to be sorry he hath taken this order upon him.
