Book excerpt: Law was a rare commodity on the vast cattle ranges and a man had to fight if he meant to hold on to what he owned. A rancher dispensed his owned justice when he caught those who stole his livestock, but Titus Sawyer lost more than cattle when rustlers raided his Red Diamond spread. Men were killed, too, slaughtered in a dreadful ambush, so, when he summoned his nephew Frank to track down the killers his desire to punish the culprits was deeper than justice; it was revenge.
Download or read book Prehistory of the Rustler Hills written by Donny L. Hamilton and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northeastern Trans-Pecos region of Texas is an unforgiving environment for anyone living off the land, yet nomadic hunters and gatherers roamed its deserts and mountains and sheltered in caves and sinkholes from around AD 200 to 1450. This book provides detailed insights into the lifeways of these little-known prehistoric peoples. It places their occupation of the region in a wider temporal and cultural framework through a comprehensive description and analysis of the archaeological remains excavated by Donny L. Hamilton at Granado Cave in 1978. Hamilton begins with a brief overview of the geology and environment of the Granado Cave area and reviews previous archaeological investigations. Then he and other researchers present detailed analyses of the burials and other material remains found in the cave, as well as the results of radiocarbon dating. From these findings, he reconstructs the subsistence patterns and burial practices of these Native Americans, whom he identifies as a distinct group that was pushed into the environment by surrounding peoples. He proposes that they should be represented by a new archaeological phase, thus helping to clarify the poorly understood late prehistory of the Trans-Pecos.
Download or read book Ridgeway s Bride written by Will DuRey and published by Robert Hale Ltd. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cassie Edmond was puzzled by the odd behaviour of those around her. First it was the curious bark from their dog Butte, then the old Ute called Charlie who sometimes called to trade for coffee and flour but now sat silent on his droop-headed paint at the yard gate. Finally it was her father, lifting down his Winchester to go hunting for meat when the meal she'd been preparing was ready for the table. But when Brad Edmond returned home, carried by Charlie Ute and a stranger, his life slipping away, his back shredded by shotgun pellets, it was the start of a night of unexpected violence for Cassie, and days of trouble for the stranger Walt Ridgeway.

Word is going around that some of the larger ranchers have hired a gunman named Wolf Carlton to stop the rustling and protect their cattle. And now a couple of the small ranchers have been found shot to death. Unfortunately for Spencer Prescott, some of the rumors are about him. Some people think that Spencer, not Wolf, is the one killing the competition. His young half sister has also been kidnapped by the killer. All this happened ten years before at their family homestead on a branch of the Cimeron in New Mexico Territory. Lightnin joined the U. S. Marshalls service and while working under cover headed west in pursuit of justice and the killer. Along the way he met and befriended a rancher named John Delong and his beautiful daughter Della, and their friend a Piute Indian named Ute. Together they thwarted an attempted kidnapping of Della by taking an old Indian trail over the top of a spectacular mountain range. In his search for his half sister and her abductor Lightnin encounters a mountain lion and grizzlie bear, rustlers and killers, and is treated to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. While tracking stolen cattle Lightnin stumbles upon a hidden, lush green valley which is being used by rustlers as a hideout. When he is spotted, he runs for his life and is saved only by his wit and his special custom Sharps rifle. Della falls in love with Lightnin, but is sure he is having an affair of the heart with Kate Bardwell. If not why is he carrying Kates picture in his bed roll? Trechery, hardship and danger lurk at every turn in the trail that Lightnin is following. A trail that he hopes will eventually lead to justice and end at the doorstep of the one woman he loves.

Download or read book The Dime Novel in Children s Literature written by Vicki Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their rakish characters, sensationalist plots, improbable adventures and objectionable language (like swell and golly), dime novels in their heyday were widely considered a threat to the morals of impressionable youth. Roundly criticized by church leaders and educators of the time, these short, quick-moving, pocket-sized publications were also, inevitably, wildly popular with readers of all ages. This work looks at the evolution of the dime novel and at the authors, publishers, illustrators, and subject matter of the genre. Also discussed are related types of children's literature, such as story papers, chapbooks, broadsides, serial books, pulp magazines, comic books and today's paperback books. The author shows how these works reveal much about early American life and thought and how they reflect cultural nationalism through their ideological teachings in personal morality and ethics, humanitarian reform and political thought. Overall, this book is a thoughtful consideration of the dime novel's contribution to the genre of children's literature. Eight appendices provide a wealth of information, offering an annotated bibliography of dime novels and listing series books, story paper periodicals, characters, authors and their pseudonyms, and more. A reference section, index and illustrations are all included.
