Book Bellies bowels and entrails in the eighteenth century

Download or read book Bellies bowels and entrails in the eighteenth century written by Rebecca Anne Barr and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays seeks to challenge the notion of the supremacy of the brain as the key organ of the Enlightenment, by focusing on the workings of the bowels and viscera that so obsessed writers and thinkers during the long eighteenth-century. These inner organs and the digestive process acted as counterpoints to politeness and other modes of refined sociability, drawing attention to the deeper workings of the self. Moving beyond recent studies of luxury and conspicuous consumption, where dysfunctional bowels have been represented as a symptom of excess, this book seeks to explore other manifestations of the visceral and to explain how the bowels played a crucial part in eighteenth-century emotions and perceptions of the self. The collection offers an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective on entrails and digestion by addressing urban history, visual studies, literature, medical history, religious history, and material culture in England, France, and Germany.

Book Deindustrialisation in Twentieth Century Europe

Download or read book Deindustrialisation in Twentieth Century Europe written by Stefan Berger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-14 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring two large economies which were heavily affected by deindustrialisation in the late twentieth century, this book provides insights into the social movements that brought about and also challenged industrial reduction in Europe. Both the Ruhr region in Germany and the Northwest of Italy experienced major structural transformation from the 1960s as a result of deindustrialisation. With contributions from experts in the field, this collection provides a comparative overview of each region, examining policy implementation, class relations, the changing political economy and environmental impact. Analysing industrial and post-industrial landscapes, urban developments and labour relations, the authors place their transnational findings within the context of the wider literature on deindustrialisation in the global North. A much-needed contribution to deindustrialisation studies, which have traditionally focused on North America and the UK, this book is a useful read for those researching deindustrialisation and the social history of Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trajectories of pollution in global capitalism, from the toxic waste of early tanneries to the poisonous effects of pesticides in the twentieth century. Through the centuries, the march of economic progress has been accompanied by the spread of industrial pollution. As our capacities for production and our aptitude for consumption have increased, so have their byproducts--chemical contamination from fertilizers and pesticides, diesel emissions, oil spills, a vast "plastic continent" found floating in the ocean. The Contamination of the Earth offers a social and political history of industrial pollution, mapping its trajectories over three centuries, from the toxic wastes of early tanneries to the fossil fuel energy regime of the twentieth century.

Book What a Waste 2 0

  • Author : Silpa Kaza
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications

Download or read book What a Waste 2 0 written by Silpa Kaza and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste management affects every person in the world. By 2050, the world is expected to increase waste generation by 70 percent, from 2.01 billion tonnes of waste in 2016 to 3.40 billion tonnes of waste annually. Individuals and governments make decisions about consumption and waste management that affect the daily health, productivity, and cleanliness of communities. Poorly managed waste is contaminating the world’s oceans, clogging drains and causing flooding, transmitting diseases, increasing respiratory problems, harming animals that consume waste unknowingly, and affecting economic development. Unmanaged and improperly managed waste from decades of economic growth requires urgent action at all levels of society. What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050 aggregates extensive solid aste data at the national and urban levels. It estimates and projects waste generation to 2030 and 2050. Beyond the core data metrics from waste generation to disposal, the report provides information on waste management costs, revenues, and tariffs; special wastes; regulations; public communication; administrative and operational models; and the informal sector. Solid waste management accounts for approximately 20 percent of municipal budgets in low-income countries and 10 percent of municipal budgets in middle-income countries, on average. Waste management is often under the jurisdiction of local authorities facing competing priorities and limited resources and capacities in planning, contract management, and operational monitoring. These factors make sustainable waste management a complicated proposition; most low- and middle-income countries, and their respective cities, are struggling to address these challenges. Waste management data are critical to creating policy and planning for local contexts. Understanding how much waste is generated—especially with rapid urbanization and population growth—as well as the types of waste generated helps local governments to select appropriate management methods and plan for future demand. It allows governments to design a system with a suitable number of vehicles, establish efficient routes, set targets for diversion of waste, track progress, and adapt as consumption patterns change. With accurate data, governments can realistically allocate resources, assess relevant technologies, and consider strategic partners for service provision, such as the private sector or nongovernmental organizations. What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050 provides the most up-to-date information available to empower citizens and governments around the world to effectively address the pressing global crisis of waste. Book Pierre Huyghe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pierre Huyghe
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book Pierre Huyghe written by Pierre Huyghe and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Huyghe's reputation in the international contemporary art scene is based on installations, films, and collaborative projects that probe our collective imagination. His works tend to generate a sense of instability by imposing unusual strategies of perception on the narrative structures through which it is constructed. They engage the observers, causing their own stock of visual images and individual memories to interact with the artificial memory of the media. The experience often underlines the rift that is produced between the real and its representation, especially in the means of communication used by the entertainment industry. Castello di Rivoli has organized an ambitious Huyghe retrospective and this catalogue-with a special pop up insert-presents all aspects of his oeuvre, including Blance-Neige Lucie, No Ghost Just a Shell, Sleeptalking, and a new work, Float, created for the show. The catalog includes a broad selection of Huyghe's own writings as well as extracts by other contemporary artists and critics, including a major essay by Carolyn Christov-Barkargiev, and a complete bio-bibliography.

Book Recycler l urbain

Download or read book Recycler l urbain written by Sabah Abouessalam and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
