Book Common Bean Improvement in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Common Bean Improvement in the Twenty First Century written by S.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ) is the most important pulse crop in the world. It is an important source of calories, proteins, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins for millions of people in both developing and developed countries worldwide. It complements cereals and other carbohydrate-rich foods in providing near-perfect nutrition to people of all ages. Moreover, a regular intake ofbeans helps lower cholesterol and cancer risks. Despite the fact that per capita consumption of common bean in some developed countries (e. g. , the U. S. A. ) has been increasing over the last several years, in general, the average global per capita consumption is declining because production is unable to keep up with the population growth. Moreover, increasing demand for pesticide-free food products, concern for natural resources conservation, and the need to reduce production costs offer daunting challenges to the twenty-first century policy makers, bean growers, and researchers alike. High yielding, high quality bean cultivars that require less water, fertilizers, pesticides, and manual labor combined with integrated management of abiotic and biotic stresses will have to be developed. Eminent bean researchers were invited to contemplate these issues, prepare a state-of-the-art account on most relevant topics, and offer their insight into research directions into the twenty-first century. Four excellent books have been published covering various aspects ofthe common bean since 1980. These books are: I) Bean Production Problems nd in the Tropics (l SI ed. 1980, 2 ed. 1989), H. F. Schwartz & M. A.

Book Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans

Download or read book Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans written by Paul Gepts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period following the second world war has witnessed an expanding commitment to incr~ased food production in tropical countries. Public and private initiatives at the national and international levels have led to the creation of programs geared specifically towards the improvement of food crops in tropical conditions. Examples of this increased commitment are the network of international agricultural research centers and numerous bilateral aid projects. As a consequence, crop improvement has become a truly worldwide endeavor, relying on an international network of institutions and collaborators. This holds also for Phaseolus beans. Following the discovery of the Americas, Phaseolus beans became distributed on all six continents. Yet, until not so long ago, most of the research on Phaseolus improvement took place in developed countries. In recognition of the nutritional importance of Phaseolus beans in developing countries, this has changed considerably in the last years, principally perhaps through the activities of the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) and the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR). Consequently, the scope of the research on Phaseolus has broadened considerably and the number of Phaseolus researchers is larger than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations on seed proteins have been intensively carried out during the past two decades. This is valid with regard to both their chemical composition as well as their nutritive value. The development of new biochemical and physical methods has resulted in obtaining deep insights into the structures of seed proteins and their mutual interactions. Intensive exchange of information between the scientists participating in national and international research programmes has given strong impulses for intensifying the research in this field. For the quantitative and quali tative investigations of seed proteins, not only some model plants were used; on the contrary, they were carried out on a large number of different crops important for different regions of the earth. In this way, a level of knowledge has been reached which could not be expected in this diversity within such a short period. This holds not only true for biochemical but also for physiological characters of the species of the limiting amino acids studied. With regard to nutritional aspects, the problem was of special interest, but also seed proteins acting as antinutritional factors were analysed in detail. Based on the knowledge of seed protein structures, it was possible to perform investigations on the genetic basis of their synthesis. This was done under two different aspects: The basic knowledge on the genes involved should be widened; moreover, it should be tried to improve the seed proteins quantitatively and qualitatively under the influence of mutant genes.

Book Recurrent Selection for Increased Seed Yield in Two Soybean Populations with Distinct Genetic Backgrounds

Download or read book Recurrent Selection for Increased Seed Yield in Two Soybean Populations with Distinct Genetic Backgrounds written by Luis Posadas and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean is the second major world oil seed and the leading source of high quality vegetable protein. Recurrent selection (RS) is a cyclic breeding method that improves population performance for quantitative traits. The UP2Y population was developed from seven unimproved plant introductions (PIs) selected on their high seed protein concentration and diverse geographical origin. The UP3Y population was developed from eight elite cultivars and experimental lines adapted to North America with diverse pedigrees selected on their high grain yield and above-average seed protein concentration. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of RS for increased grain yield on major agronomic traits of the soybean UP2Y and UP3Y populations. Response to selection was measured by evaluating the 10 highest-yielding lines selected at the end of each cycle. The seven founders of the UP2Y and seven of the eight founders of the UP3Y populations were evaluated along with 10 parental lines of each of three (Cycle 1, Cycle 2 and Cycle 3) and two (Cycle 1 and Cycle 3) cycles of the UP2Y and UP3Y populations, respectively, in randomized complete block designs across eight environments with three replications. After three cycles of RS in the UP2Y population, grain yield increased significantly from a mean of 3070 kg ha-1 for Cycle 0 (C0) to a mean of 5037 kg ha-1 for Cycle 3 (C3), averaging a significant gain of 673 kg ha-1 cycle-1. Seed protein concentration decreased an average of 16 g kg-1 cycle-1. Seed oil concentration increased an average of 8.7 g kg-1 cycle -1. Results of the UP3Y evaluation showed that after three cycles of RS grain yield increased significantly from a mean of 4200 kg ha-1 for C0 to a mean of 4499 kg ha-1 for C3, averaging a significant gain of 101 kg ha-1 cycle-1. Seed protein concentration decreased an average of 2.8 g kg-1 cycle-1 while seed oil concentration increased an average of 0.8 g kg-1 cycle -1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant breeding, the domestication and systematic improvement of crop species, is the basis of past and present agriculture. Our so called primitive progenitors selected practically all our present-day crop plants, and the improvement wrought through millenia of selection has so changed some of them that in many cases their links to the past have been obliterated. There is no doubt that this ranks among the greatest of human achievements. Although plant breeding has been a continuous empirical activity for as long as humans have forsaken the vagaries and thrill of hunting for the security and toil of agriculture, genetic crop improvement is now very much of a twentieth-century discipline. Its scientific underpinnings date to the beginning of this century with the discovery of Gregor Mendel's classic 1865 paper on the inheritance of seven characters in the garden pea. If any science can be traced to single event, the best example is surely found in the conception of modern genetics that appears in this single creative work. The relationship of plant breeding progress to advances in genetics has become closely entwined. Mendel himself was concerned with crop improvement and worked on schemes for apple and pear breeding. Plant breeding also has claims on other scientific and agricultural disci plines-botany, plant pathology, biochemistry, statistics, taxonomy, entomology, and cytology, to name a few-and has also impinged on our social, ethical, economic, and political consciousness.
