Book Conflict and Peace in Central Eurasia

Download or read book Conflict and Peace in Central Eurasia written by Babak Rezvani and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict and Peace in Central Eurasia combines theory with in-depth description and systematic analyses of ethnoterritorial conflict and coexistence in Central Eurasia. Central Eurasia is at the heart of the Eurasian continent around the Caspian Sea. Much of this macro-region is made up of the post-Soviet republics in Central Asia and the Caucasus, but it also covers other areas, such as parts of Russia and Iran. Central Eurasia is subject to a number of ethnoterritorial conflicts. Yet at the same time, a large number of ethnic groups, speaking different languages and following different religions, coexist peacefully in this macro-region. Babak Rezvani explains ethno-territorial conflicts not only by focusing on these conflicts but also by comparing all cases of conflict and coexistence in (post-)Soviet Central Asia, the Caucasus and Fereydan, the so-called Iranian little Caucasus. Aiming at formulating new theories, this book makes use of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), as well as case studies and statistical analyses. It provides an innovative and interesting contribution to Eurasian Studies and Conflict Analysis, and at the same time demonstrates a detailed knowledge of the relevant literature. Based on thorough research, the study offers a deep and insightful history of the areas and conflicts concerned.

Book The Journals of Susanna Moodie

Download or read book The Journals of Susanna Moodie written by Margaret Atwood and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Atwood's The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970), regarded by many as her most fully realized volume of poetry, is one of the great Canadian and feminist epics. In 1980, Margaret Atwood's longtime friend, the distinguished Canadian artist Charles Pachter, illustrated, designed, and published a handmade boxed portfolio edition of 120 copies of the poem with silkscreen prints, created as an act of homage to the poet. Atwood herself has said of Pachter's work, His is a sophisticated art which draws upon many techniques and evokes many echoes. The poem and the prints inspire one another. This is the first facsimile edition of the original, as well as the first one-volume American edition of the poem, with an introduction by Charles Pachter and a foreword by David Staines.

Download or read book The House of All Sorts written by Emily Carr and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Carr was primarily a painter, but she first gained recognition as an author for her seven books about her journeys to remote Native communities and stories about life as an artist, as a small child in Victoria at the turn of the last century—and as a reluctant landlady. Before winning recognition for her painting and writing, Carr built a small apartment building with four suites (she lived in one of them) that she hoped would earn her a living. But things turned out worse than expected, and in her forties, the gifted artist found herself shoveling coal and cleaning up after people for 23 years. The House of All Sorts is a collection of 41 stories of those hard-working days and the parade of tenants- young couples, widows, sad bachelors and rent evaders— all the tears and travails of being a landlady confronted with the startling foibles of humanity. Carr is at her most acerbic and rueful, but filled with energy and inextinguishable hope. Carr’s writing is vital and direct, aware and poignant, and as well regarded today as when The House of All Sorts was first published in 1944 to critical and popular acclaim. The book has been in print ever since.

Book Without Ceremony

    Book Details:
  • Author : Angela Carr
  • Publisher : Book*hug Press
  • Release : 2020-10-15
  • ISBN : 9781771666299
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Without Ceremony written by Angela Carr and published by Book*hug Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centred on the everyday, and crafted without preamble or pretension, the poems in Without Ceremony are a literary pastiche--a thematic mosaic not unlike tracks on an album. Amidst a timeless cast of characters from Lucretius and Eva Hesse, to Joan Mitchell and St. Augustine, Carr illuminates what it means to truly know something and questions how certain knowledge becomes valued over others. Without Ceremony spotlights the gendered division of ideas and the inherent strength of language to harm and oppress, as well as elevate. Within these pages, passing encounters become rare spectacles, and the ordinary, without ambitions of grandeur or ceremony, is celebrated, making Carr's new collection a clarifying elixir for our time. Praise for Angela Carr: "Angela Carr's words in Without Ceremony point their arrows toward a ledge where communication knows "both failure and perfection at once." Her poetry isn't invested in naming things (perhaps this is what is unceremonious) because things, even thingness, and their energies change so rapidly. Carr creates a field of verb-rich arriving where confessional exasperations are tried and transformed in pleasurable abstraction. She summons other women poets and artists (Hesse, Dickinson, Mitchell) not to revere them but to create a queer chorus of those who can bring us to see that what seems holy is simply ordinary." --Stacy Szymaszek, author of A Year From Today "Angela Carr's poems spark a startling immediacy directly to the heart of everyday encounters and how poems form "under the moment of language." Her work gives us the rare and complex gift of how to move out of the house of regret amidst the instability of the contemporary. Here in Without Ceremony are interior conversations with the likes of Lucretius, Dickinson, Moorman, that show how readers become writers and how words feel when put on us by others, which ones we choose to wear, which to strip off. Let Without Ceremony become one of those books "that are familiar as friends," always present to puncture through the space of the day to the intimacy we need to construct joy, a holding area for the moving moment." --Lee Ann Brown, author of Other Archer
