Book Recruiting Retention and Future Levels of Military Personnel

Download or read book Recruiting Retention and Future Levels of Military Personnel written by Emmanuel D. Chapman and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the U.S. military's ability to maintain the force levels required for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan which rests on recruiting and retaining service members. Some military analysts and policymakers have expressed concern that the ongoing operations could detrimentally affect both recruiting and retention. The proportion of youth who say that they may join the military increased after September 11, 2001, but according to the Department of Defense (DoD) survey of parents and other adults who influence youths' decisions, a majority in 2005 said that they were less likely to recommend military service because of the war in Iraq. In this study, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) examines the recruiting and retention rates for enlisted personnel within each of the military components, the factors that may influence enlistment and reenlistment, and the implications of changes in each component's success in recruiting and retaining service members. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth

Download or read book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting an all-volunteer military is a formidable task. To successfully enlist one eligible recruit, the Army must contact approximately 120 young people. The National Research Council explores the various factors that will determine whether the military can realistically expect to recruit an adequate fighting force-one that will meet its upcoming needs. It also assesses the military's expected manpower needs and projects the numbers of youth who are likely to be available over the next 20 years to meet these needs. With clearly written text and useful graphics, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth offers an overview of important issues for military recruiters, touching on a number of important topics including: sex and race, education and aptitude, physical and moral attributes, and military life and working conditions. In addition, the book looks at how a potential recruit would approach the decision to enlist, considering personal, family, and social values, and the options for other employment or college. Building on the need to increase young Americans' "propensity to enlist," this book offers useful recommendations for increasing educational opportunities while in the service and for developing advertising strategies that include concepts of patriotism and duty to country. Of primary value to military policymakers, recruitment officers, and analysts, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth will also interest social scientists and policy makers interested in youth trends.

Book excerpt: "The aim of the Armed Forces of the NATO nations is to be fully operational while undergoing a constant process of change. To achieve this goal, it is important to be able to recruit qualified personnel and retain those who have accumulated critical military experience. Thus, the objective of this study is to foster a true understanding of the mechanisms that influence recruitment and retention outcomes. The outcome of this study is composed of three deliverables - a final report, a R & R-workshop, which was held in order to disseminate the results of the study and a R & R Literature Database of the research used by the Task Group."--Introductory screen.

Book The Effects of Pay and Benefits on Recruiting and Retention in the US Army

Download or read book The Effects of Pay and Benefits on Recruiting and Retention in the US Army written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last several years there has been a growing concern over the increasing gap between military and civilian pay. More recently, the relationship between retention and retirement benefits has been of increasing interest to Members of Congress and Military Personnel officials. Over the last 10 years, Military Pay and Retirement Benefits did not significantly influence recruiting, but they become significant factors in the retention of soldiers beyond the initial enlistment. This report argues that there is no pay gap as it is currently defined. Comparison of military and civilian compensation as it relates to pay growth is not a true measure of any gap. Analysis of the data indicates that as the pay gap has increased, there has been a slight increase in recruiting and retention. This trend, while it negates part of my thesis, does not truly explain the total relationship between pay and recruiting/retention. There are other factors, such as stop loss, which during the early 1990's prevented soldiers from leaving the service due to specialty shortages and the Gulf War; and the drawdown that have artificially inflated enlisted reenlistment rates and officer retention. Additionally, recruiting percentages are not an accurate reflection of the impact of pay on attracting today s young men and women. As Youth Attitudes Tracking Surveys (YATS) indicate, the dominant buying motives for the last eight years are training and education. Additional factors that outweigh the current pay gap debate and that need serious study are troop morale; health care; family care; housing, and other quality of life issues. These issues upon further study may indicate the true nature of the Army s retention problem and provide the answers we seek.
