Book Recruiting and Retaining America s Finest

Download or read book Recruiting and Retaining America s Finest written by Jeremy M. Wilson and published by Rand Corporation Monograph. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Personnel management is a critical but oft neglected function of police organizations. While much attention is given to recruiting and retention, these are only tools for accomplishing a larger goal: achieving and maintaining the profile of officers by experience and rank that satisfies agency needs and officer career aspirations. Police agencies often have little ability to assess their organization and environment, and they receive little guidance on how best to build and maintain their workforces. In this monograph, the authors seek to fill the gap of information available to police agencies through a survey on their recruitment and retention practices. The survey, sent to every U.S. police agency with at least 300 sworn officers, sought to document such characteristics as authorized and actual strength by rank, officer work and qualifications, compensation, and recruiting efforts. The authors used these data to provide an overview of current recruitment and retention practices, to describe how they affected police recruitment and personnel profiles, and to identify future research needs. Findings include that police compensation, city size, and crime rates had statistically significant effects on police recruiting. Advertising and recruiting incentives had little effect on the number of recruits. Cohort sizes and structures highlighted current and future personnel management challenges. To facilitate comparative and longitudinal analyses of police staffing, the authors recommend ongoing national data collection."--P. [4] of cover.

Book Police Administration

Download or read book Police Administration written by Gary W. Cordner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This national best-selling text examines police administration from multiple perspectives: a systems perspective (emphasizing the interrelatedness among units and organizations); a traditional, structural perspective (administrative principles, management functions, and the importance of written guidelines); a human behavioral perspective (the human element in organizations); and a strategic management perspective (communications and information systems, performance evaluation, strategies and tactics, and prevailing and promising approaches to increasing effectiveness of police agencies). Coverage of management functions and organizational principles is streamlined while providing a stronger emphasis on diversity principles and on developing police agencies as learning organizations. A concluding chapter covers contemporary issues, including community engagement, collaboration, globalization, racial profiling, mass media, cybercrime, terrorism and homeland security. Case studies based on real-life events invite students to practice managing the conflicting circumstances, and Modern policing blog posts offer news and developments in the policing world.

Book Recruiting Retaining and Promoting Culturally Different Employees

Download or read book Recruiting Retaining and Promoting Culturally Different Employees written by Lionel Laroche and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-02-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USA and Canada welcomes every year significant numbers of immigrant professionals who have high levels of formal education (Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D.) as well as extensive experience; yet a significant fraction of these immigrants are unemployed or underemployed. The purpose of this book is to help US and Canadian organizations make full use of the significant human capital that immigrants represent. This book will help organizations: • Modify their recruitment and selection process to avoid rejecting culturally different candidates for reasons that are not related to their ability to do the job • Develop and promote culturally diverse employees to ensure that they retain and capitalize on the new ideas that these employees bring Highly- practical the book is divided into two parts:- • The first part focuses on the recruiting process. It takes readers through the recruiting process used by most organizations and examines why cultural differences can throw this process off . The discussion is framed by an introduction explaining what cultural differences are and a description of cross-cultural communication issues and suggested solutions. • The second part examines the retention and promotion of culturally different employees. The turnover of culturally different people is often higher than average and they are proportionately less represented in the higher echelons of large organizations. The work examines the root causes of these issues and proposes solutions that individuals and organizations can implement.
