Book excerpt: A solvent-extraction system was tested in a continuous counter-current trial to evaluate its extraction efficiency for nickel and cobalt and its relative selectivity for these metals over calcium. The aqueous feed solution was a bioleach leach liquor containing 6.65 g/L nickel, 0.5 g/L calcium, 0.22 g/L cobalt, 1.0 g/L magnesium, and trace amounts of manganese. The extractant tested contained 0.51M versatic acid in a synergistic mixture with 0.52M 4-nonylpyridine. 10 vol. % iso-decanol was added as a phase modified and an aliphatic hydrocarbon diluent (C12 - C13 n-paraffin) was used.^L^LThe operation of four counter-current extraction stages each with a residence time of 5 minutes in the mixers and an operating pH of 5.8 - 6.0, produced a raffinate containing 0.1 g/L nickel (98% extraction) and 0.02 g/L cobalt (90% extraction). The nickel loading on the organic phase was 8.5 - 9.5 g/L. The co-extraction of calcium and magnesium was negligible (1%) while copper was quantitatively extracted. Sodium hydroxide consumption was 1.45 kg per kg of nickel extracted, approximately 22% in excess of the stoichiometric requirement.^L^LThe loaded organic phase was stripped in one stage with solution containing 60 g/L nickel and 50 g/L sulphuric acid. Nickel stripping efficiency was 92%, giving a nickel across the strip circuit of approximately 30 g/L. The stripping of nickel was not quantitative as the pH in the loaded strip liquor was controlled at 2 - 2.5 to minimise the protonation of the synergist.
