Book Recovery Beyond Psychiatry

Download or read book Recovery Beyond Psychiatry written by David Whitwell and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Whitwell's thesis is that it is not conventional psychiatric treatment that is key to recovery, but non-specific aspects of care such as support, safety, general health, good relationships. The author's conclusion is that recovery should be adopted as the goal of mental health services. Treatment then becomes just one option that can be used in certain situations. For example, acute psychiatry becomes a particular set of procedures for dealing with essentially urgent and dangerous situations-as a special kind of first aid which needs to be fitted into the individual's long-term recovery plan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on true events, I offer details of my own life, my struggles with mental illness, substance abuse, and recovery. Offered is a unique perspective of America’s broken mental healthcare system and the cruel treatment of patients dealing with addiction, providing real solutions supported by research. America’s fragmented mental healthcare system and treatment of addiction promotes an outdated cure that is often far worse than the disease it supposedly treats. This is a treatment that exacerbates addictive behaviors, mental illness, and increases average substance misuse. If mental illness and addictive behaviors are to be combatted, reduced, or eliminated, the core foundation of societal values, as well as beliefs about addiction recovery and our mental health ecosystem, must be rebuilt from the ground up.

Book The Roots of the Recovery Movement in Psychiatry

Download or read book The Roots of the Recovery Movement in Psychiatry written by Larry Davidson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global psychiatric community enters a new era of transformation, this book explores lessons learned from previous efforts with the goal of “getting it right” this time. In response to the common refrain that we know about and ‘do’ recovery already, the authors set the recovery movement within the conceptual framework of major thinkers and achievers in the history of psychiatry, such as Philippe Pinel, Dorothea Dix, Adolf Meyer, Harry Stack Sullivan, and Franco Basaglia. The book reaches beyond the usual boundaries of psychiatry to incorporate lessons from related fields, such as psychology, sociology, social welfare, philosophy, political economic theory, and civil rights. From Jane Addams and the Settlement House movement to Martin Luther King, Jr., and Gilles Deleuze, this book identifies the less well-known and less visible dimensions of the recovery concept and movement that underlie concrete clinical practice. In addition, the authors highlight the limitations of previous efforts to reform and transform mental health practice, such as the de-institutionalization movement begun in the 1950s, in the hope that the field will not have to repeat these same mistakes. Their thoughtful analysis and valuable advice will benefit people in recovery, their loved ones, the practitioners who serve them, and society at large. Foreword by Fred Frese, Founder of the Community and State Hospital Section of the American Psychological Association and past president of the National Mental Health Consumers' Association

BPD affects a significant percentage of the population. It is a disorder of relationships, one whose symptoms occur most in interpersonal contexts—and thus impact any number of interpersonal connections in life. When people have BPD, they may struggle to manage their emotions on a daily basis, and have to deal with fears of abandonment, anger issues, self-injury, and even suicidality—all of which can lead to even more instability in relationships. In Beyond Borderline, two internationally acclaimed experts on BPD—including Perry Hoffman, cofounder and president of the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEA-BPD)—team up to present a rare glimpse into the lives and recovery of people affected by BPD. This powerful compilation of stories reveals the deeply personal, firsthand perspectives of people who suffer with BPD, explores the numerous ways in which this disorder has affected their lives, and outlines the most debilitating and misunderstood symptoms of BPD (the most tragic being suicide). Beyond Borderline delves into the many ways the disorder can present—as well as the many paths to recovery—using evidence-based tools from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness meditation, mentalization-based therapy (MBT), and more. BPD is a challenging disorder that impacts people’s lives and relationships in countless ways. With this book—full of intimate accounts that reflect the myriad ways BPD presents and how it affects not just those afflicted, but also their loved ones—you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the disorder and learn how to move forward on the path toward healing while dealing with BPD.

Book A Practical Guide to Recovery Oriented Practice Tools for Transforming Mental Health Care

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Recovery Oriented Practice Tools for Transforming Mental Health Care written by Larry Davidson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a lofty vision of "recovery" and of "a life in the community" for every adult with a serious mental illness promised by the U.S. President's 2003 New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and shows the reader what is entailed in making this vision a reality. Beginning with the historical context of the recovery movement and its recent emergence on the center stage of mental health policy around the world, the authors then clarify various definitions of mental health recovery and address the most common misconceptions of recovery held by skeptical practitioners and worried families. With this framework in place, the authors suggest fundamental principles for recovery-oriented care, a set of concrete practice guidelines developed in and for the field, a recovery guide model of practice as an alternative to clinical case management, and tools to self-assess the recovery orientation of practices and practitioners. In doing so, this volume represents the first book to go beyond the rhetoric of recovery to its implementation in everyday practice. Much of this work was developed with the State of Connecticut's Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, helping the state to win a #1 ranking in the recent NAMI report card on state mental health authorities. Since initial development of these principles, guidelines, and tools in Connecticut, the authors have become increasingly involved in refining and tailoring this approach for other systems of care around the globe as more and more governments, ministry leaders, system managers, practitioners, and people with serious mental illnesses and their families embrace the need to transform mental health services to promote recovery and community inclusion. If you've wondered what all of the recent to-do has been about with the notion of "recovery" in mental health, this book explains it. In addition, it gives you an insider's view of the challenges and strategies involved in transforming to recovery and a road map to follow on the first few steps down this exciting, promising, and perhaps long overdue path.

Book Learning Bodies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Coffey
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-02-03
  • ISBN : 9811003068
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Learning Bodies written by Julia Coffey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Learning Bodies’ addresses the lack of attention paid to the body in youth and childhood studies. Whilst a significant range of work on this area has explored gender, class, race and ethnicity, and sexualities – all of which have bodily dimensions – the body is generally studied indirectly, rather than being the central focus. This collection of papers brings together a scholarly range of international, interdisciplinary work on youth, with a specific focus on the body. The authors engage with conceptual, empirical and pedagogical approaches which counteract perspectives that view young people’s bodies primarily as ‘problems’ to be managed, or as sites of risk or deviance. The authors demonstrate that a focus on the body allows us to explore a range of additional dimensions in seeking to understand the experiences of young people. The research is situated across a range of sites in Australia, North America, Britain, Canada, Asia and Africa, drawing on a range of disciplines including sociology, education and cultural studies in the process. This collection aims to demonstrate – theoretically, empirically and pedagogically – the implications that emerge from a reframed approach to understanding children and youth by focusing on the body and embodiment.
