This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Family of Pennyman of Ormesby At the beginning of the last century the neighbourhood was solely agricultural. The estate reached to the river Tees, a few miles from its mouth, and one of the farm-tenants had to pay, in the days when rents were paid partly in kind, two salmon fishes to his landlord. Four miles from Ormesby there was, according to Graves' History of Cleve land, published in 1808, a township or chapelry of Middlesbrough, which consists only of four farm houses. Now the iron trade has come. Middlesbrough is its capital, and has a population fast getting on for many of the villages in the district have become towns; the river is murky with smoke and resounds to the c'lang of machinery for miles of its course. Yet the little village of Ormesby has hardly changed. It still nestles among its trees, a pretty, peaceful spot for the busy worker from grimy Middlesbrough to cycle through on a summer's evening. Indeed if it were not for these cyclists and other traffic passing through the village, one might well fancy oneself in the depths of rural England. An afternoon's walk are the Cleveland hills, rising to heights of as much as feet. From some of their summits there are views of unusual diversity, stretching over other hills, over the sea, which is but eight miles from Ormesby, over the course of the Tees fringed with chimneys and furnaces, and over miles of level plain to the west. Book Tracing Your Northern Ancestors

Download or read book Tracing Your Northern Ancestors written by Keith Gregson and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The far north of England is a key site for family historians. Many researchers, seeking to trace their ancestry back through the generations, will find their trail leads to the north or through it. And yet, despite the burgeoning interest in genealogy and the importance of the region in so many life stories, no previous book has provided a guide to the documents and records that family historians can use in their search. In this accessible and informative introduction to the subject, Keith Gregson looks at the history and heritage of the region - of Northumberland, Tyneside, Durham, Wearside, Tees Valley and Cumbria - and gives a fascinating insight into the world in which our ancestors lived. He introduces the reader to the variety of records that are available for genealogical research, from legal and ecclesiastical archives, birth and death certificates to the records of local government, employers, institutions, clubs, societies and schools.

Book Slavery Family and Gentry Capitalism in the British Atlantic

Download or read book Slavery Family and Gentry Capitalism in the British Atlantic written by S. D. Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-seventeenth century to the 1830s, successful gentry capitalists created an extensive business empire centered on slavery in the West Indies, but inter-linked with North America, Africa, and Europe. S. D. Smith examines the formation of this British Atlantic World from the perspective of Yorkshire aristocratic families who invested in the West Indies. At the heart of the book lies a case study of the plantation-owning Lascelles and the commercial and cultural network they created with their associates. The Lascelles exhibited high levels of business innovation and were accomplished risk-takers, overcoming daunting obstacles to make fortunes out of the New World. Dr Smith shows how the family raised themselves first to super-merchant status and then to aristocratic pre-eminence. He also explores the tragic consequences for enslaved Africans with chapters devoted to the slave populations and interracial relations. This widely researched book sheds new light on the networks and the culture of imperialism.
