Book Reconstructive Surgery of the Middle Ear

Download or read book Reconstructive Surgery of the Middle Ear written by Jun'ichi Suzuki and published by Elsevier Science Health Science Division. This book was released on 1999 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be a companion for the surgeon performing tympanoplasty. Tympanoplasty is a unique operation which half a century ago appeared as the first functional surgery under microscopy in the history of medicine. There are several different surgical approaches to any case of chronic ear disease, and in each case, the best method of tympanoplasty should be used. The success rate of tympanoplasty should be high enough to be able to operate when there is only one hearing ear and a success rate of 100% is required. Hence, the objective of training ear surgeons is to obtain 100% confidence in their tympanoplasty. Most ear surgeons would agree, that 'closed method tympanoplasty' is the best method, of which two techniques can be chosen, 'closed method, intact posterior canal wall technique' which requires more skills because of a limited visual field, and the 'closed method, posterior canal wall reconstruction method'. The latter is recommended in this book and is shown in detail, from basic knowledge and information to expert advice. The book shows some "secrets" for those who want to be independent surgeons and good enough to dare to operate on the only hearing ear. The book is richly illustrated. In addition it has the unique aspect of many "Box" articles. Important issues appear again in "Boxes" where they are summarized. Several "Box" articles on special subjects are contributed by colleagues who previously worked or studied in the authors' hospital.

Book Microtia and Atresia Combined Approach by Plastic and Otologic Surgery

Download or read book Microtia and Atresia Combined Approach by Plastic and Otologic Surgery written by K. Kaga and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable progress in the development of new concepts and techniques used in reconstructive surgery of microtia/atresia of the external auditory canal (EAC) has been made since the beginning of the 21st century. Helical computed tomography has made a three-dimensional reconstruction of the soft tissue of the temporal bone surface and the cranium possible, and has laid the groundwork for a collaboration between plastic surgeons and otologists. This book presents the latest findings on reconstructive surgery performed jointly by plastic surgeons and otologists. Based on this concept, information on diagnosis, surgical procedures, outcomes, long-term results and psychology is discussed. Collaborative surgery offers advantages not only in terms of a better reconstruction of morphology and function, but also in terms of the lower number of surgical procedures required which reduces the psychological pressure and economic burden on patients.

Book Aesthetics and Functionality in Ear Reconstruction

Download or read book Aesthetics and Functionality in Ear Reconstruction written by Rainer Staudenmaier and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ear reconstruction has developed from the sole plastic reconstruction of the auricle to a more complex procedure that includes the functional rehabilitation of hearing. For the patient's benefit the number of surgeries could be reduced to two or three while still maintaining excellent results. This development is due to improvements in surgical procedures as well as technical developments such as bone-anchored hearing aids or cochlear implants. The authors of this volume have considered different aspects of reconstruction of severe ear malformation. Developments in surgery and the choice of prosthetic materials are closely examined, and the benefits of alloplastic materials in comparison to autologous cartilage are discussed. Cosmetic outcomes are not described in isolation, but with reference to improvements in patients' hearing, particularly in the context of bone-anchored and implantable hearing aids. Related fields, such as tissue engineering, hold vast untapped potential for this area. The impact they will have in the future is discussed in detail, helping to paint a picture of treatment options that will become available to professionals. This volume is an indispensable review that will be of interest to otorhinolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons and pediatricians
