Book Acceptance of post tensioning systems for cryogenic applications

Download or read book Acceptance of post tensioning systems for cryogenic applications written by FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete and published by FIB - International Federation for Structural Concrete. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second World War the demand of energy has undergone an exponential growth that has led to a sharp annual increase in the use of natural gas in both, cities and thermal power stations. Nowadays, the strategic relevance of natural gas as a main source of energy is evident with a contribution of more than 20% of the total world consumption. This development in increasing demand of natural gas has led for a need of suitable storage and transportation infrastructure. Various gases, especially hydrocarbons, are preferably stored in liquid form for transportation and storage since the phase transformation from gas to liquid comes with a significant reduction of the volume (e.g. up to 600 times). Gases can be liquefied by raising the pressure or by cooling to their boiling point, which for most gases is below 0°C. This is known as cryogenic storage. The term cryogenic is derived from two Greek words, namely kryos meaning icy-cold and genes which can be translated as shape. These fib recommendations are concerned about post-tensioning systems used in cryogenic tanks and have been formulated on the basis of actual available knowledge with the aim to reflect the current state of the art. Consequently, these recommendations have included a classification of the different cryogenic tanks typologies used in the past and nowadays, the associated different tendon types depending on their exposure to low temperature (e.g. never, only accidentally or during normal tank operation) and the testing regime required for acceptance of the materials and the post-tensioning system according to this document. An international working group comprising more than 20 experts from administrative authorities, universities, laboratories, owners, structural designers, suppliers of prestressing steels and post-tensioning systems suppliers have actively contributed in order to develop these recommendations. This text has been written to cover best construction practices around the world, and to provide material specifications which are considered to be the most advanced available at the time of preparing this text. For ease of use (for Owner, Designer and Post-tensioning System Supplier), the content has been arranged systematically according to the system components into chapters focusing on performance characteristics, requirements and acceptance criteria.

Book Recommendations for the design of flat slabs in post tension concrete using unbonded and bonded tendons

Download or read book Recommendations for the design of flat slabs in post tension concrete using unbonded and bonded tendons written by FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete and published by FIB - International Federation for Structural Concrete. This book was released on 1980-05-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These recommendations present a guide to the design of two-way spanning, post-tensioned concrete flat slabs using unbonded or bonded tendons. Recommendations purely related to the use of unbonded tendons are clearly marked. These recommendations are intended only for the design of post-tensioned flat slabs in buildings and do not include the use in bridges. Post-tensioned concrete construction can be defined as unbonded or bonded, depending on whether the tendon ducts are filled with a cement grout (in order to provide a bonded structure) or whether the tendons are suitably coated and wrapped or greased and plastic covered (unbonded). While in a number of countries, (e.g., United States and Canada) economic and construction considerations have resulted in the selection of unbonded tendons, in other countries the use of the traditional bonded tendons is favoured, (e.g., Australia). Some of the advantages claimed for the use of unbonded tendons can be summarized as follows: Extremely low friction values, tendons are fully protected against corrosion during construction, maximum possible tendon drape due to the small diameter of the tendon; this is of major importance in slender structures such as flat plates, simple and fast placement of the tendons, avoidance of grouting operations. When tendons are grouted after stressing the claimed advantages are particularly that the bond between the concrete structure and the tendons increases the ultimate strength and less reliance is placed on the long-term adequacy of the anchorage.

Book Durability of Post tensioning Tendons

Download or read book Durability of Post tensioning Tendons written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2006 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The durability of post-tensioning tendons depends undoubtedly on the durability of the materials used, but there are design concept specifics which are also of major importance: the post-tensioning layout and layers of protection such as concrete cover and selected materials in view of the aggressivity of the environment for instance. It is well known that sustainability principles guide the Engineer from the very beginning, at the project conception, during construction and the service life of a structure. Decisions made during conceptual and design stage have the largest influence on the durability and sustainability of post-tensioning tendons. fibBulletin 33 addresses the specifics for prestressed concrete structures: the durability of post-tensioning tendons. It should be noted that it does not repeat topics that have been addressed in other fib bulletins and which is common for both reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures. Pre-tensioning, which is used extensively in the precast industry, is not considered here, although conclusions and recommendations herein may, in many cases, also be applicable. This recommendation was prepared by Working Party 5.4.2, Durability specifics for prestressed concrete structures, in cooperation with fib Commission 9,Reinforcing and prestressing materials and systems. A preliminary version of this recommendation served as the basic document for the second workshop on "Durability of post-tensioning tendons", held on 11-12 October 2004 in Zurich. This workshop was a follow-up to the first workshop held in Ghent in 2001. Bulletin 33 includes revisions corresponding to the agreed results of the Zurich workshop.

Book Polymer duct systems for internal bonded post tensioning

Download or read book Polymer duct systems for internal bonded post tensioning written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this recommendation - fib Bulletin 75: Polymer-duct systems for internal bonded post-tensioning - is to update and amend fib Bulletin 7:Corrugated plastic ducts for internal bonded post-tensioning, a technical report published in 2000. fib Bulletin 75 is meant as a cornerstone for the technical approval of polymer (plastic) ducts for internal bonded post-tensioning and possibly for the test procedures of a future testing standard. The updated bulletin includes new information on the design and detailing of concrete structures containing tendons with polymer ducts. The recommendation provides detailed test specifications for polymer materials, duct components and duct systems. In addition, the report contains recommendations for approval testing and attestations of conformity for polymer-duct systems. Although the new generation of corrugated polymer ducts for bonded post-tensioning have now been around for approximately twenty years, products still differ in material properties, geometrical detail, installation procedures and on-site use. Unlike corrugated steel ducts or smooth polyethylene (PE) pipes, they have not yet become standardized. It is the opinion of fib Task Group 9.16 and Commission 9 that these plastic ducts should, therefore, still be subjected to a systems approval process. This recommendation offers information acquired from twenty years of experience as well as new specifications that will, hopefully, lead to the standardization of polymer-duct systems.

Book Post tensioning in Buildings

Download or read book Post tensioning in Buildings written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of prestressing technology has constituted one of the more important improvements in the fields of structural engineering and construction. Referring particularly to post-tensioning applications, it is generally recognized how it opens the possibility to improve economy, structural behaviour and aesthetic aspects in concrete solutions. In spite of the simplicity of its basic concepts and well-known advantages, the application extent of post-tensioning solutions cannot be considered harmonized in the different areas and structural applications. In fact, for various reasons, it appears that the potential offered by prestressing is far from being fully exploited, especially in building structures field. In many cases where post-tensioning would provide a visibly superior solution, it happens after all that a more conventional non-prestressed solution is often selected. The main objective of this fib Technical Report is therefore to show the benefits of using post-tensioning for the more common practical applications in concrete buildings. The document is mainly addressed to architects, contractors and owners. It is also drafted with the goal of motivating building designers to use post-tensioning: basic design aspects related to prestressing effects and design criteria are summarized and conceptual design aspects are emphasized. A set of practical examples is presented, showing the adopted solutions and their advantages when meeting the requirements of specific problems. The selected examples were precisely not chosen because they are outstanding structures. As a matter of fact, post-tensioning principles and technology can be used in any structure, independently of its importance, covering a wide range of building structural applications, improving the structure quality and promoting concrete as a structural material. The advantages of using post-tensioning, concerning structural behaviour, economy, detailing and constructive aspects, are illustrated by the presentation of several existing structures, most of them designed by Working Party members. General design calculations are not presented, but design results showing the improvement in structural behaviour are illustrated.
