Book Dad s Best Memories and Recollections

Download or read book Dad s Best Memories and Recollections written by Charles J. Humber and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DAD’S BEST MEMORIES AND RECOLLECTIONS is Chazzz Humber’s epithaph casting a very long and sentimental shadow across North America and beyond. This 230-page volume is his granite monument, well-polished! It lavishly records 125 of his best memories over a life-span of nearly eighty years. The vignettes are serenaded with more than 400 illustrations. Those discovering this volume likely will find themselves wanting to record, in their own sunset years, their personal memories and recollections. And when they do, they are apt to recall what it was like to live in their fluctuating world dominated by a variety of personalities and cascading events. Mr. Humber vividly describes what it was like, in 1945, to travel in a 1930 Model A Ford from Toronto to Boston. With lively enthusiasm, he reports what it was like to live in post-World War II Boston, to cook a lobster for a former President of the United States or to sell a pair of elevator shoes to one of Hollywood’s shortest celebrities or to shine the shoes of a Derby-hatted father of a future President of the United States. It is not a remarkable achievement to reflect, to recall or to have memories that are treasured. But to tell them with literary aplomb, to recall the events that happened nearly seventy-five years ago with utmost clarity is definitely an admirable achievement and should be cherished not only by the kin who follow Mr. Humber but by those who might like to imitate what he has monumentally achieved in Dad’s Best Memories and Recollections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raised by her widowed mother in a Tamil village in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, "Sandy," born Pooranam Elayathamby, grew up in poverty with her five sisters. Married at sixteen, she had three children before twenty and was widowed by age thirty. In the middle of a frightening twenty-year civil war that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and left her family destitute, Sandy had no choice but to accept a housemaid job in the Middle East, working in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia for nearly fifteen years, to send money home. She was one of the thousands of Sri Lankan women who risked being bullied, humiliated, and beaten by joining the workforce serving Middle Eastern households. Mumkin Bukra -- Arabic for "perhaps tomorrow" -- recounts Sandy's struggle to save her family, her home, and herself through several decades shaped by poverty, severe cultural adversities, and the horrors of a frightening civil war. In this candid true story that will leave readers astounded by the human will, Sandy recounts the events that defined and shaped her life as a worker with little rights abroad. Hers is a story of courage, personal risk, and an unwavering faith and belief in herself and in God's help for those who choose to endure. It is also the story of a mother who does anything she can to support her children and improve their lives.

Book Native Memoirs from the War of 1812

Download or read book Native Memoirs from the War of 1812 written by Carl Benn and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare firsthand accounts from Native Americans who fought in the War of 1812. Native peoples played major roles in the War of 1812 as allies of both the United States and Great Britain, but few wrote about their conflict experiences. Two famously wrote down their stories: Black Hawk, the British-allied chief of the still-independent Sauks from the upper Mississippi, and American soldier William Apess, a Christian convert from the Pequots who lived on a reservation in Connecticut. Carl Benn explores the wartime passages of their autobiographies, in which they detail their decisions to take up arms, their experiences in the fighting, their broader lives within the context of native-newcomer relations, and their views on such critical issues as aboriginal independence. Scholars, students, and general readers interested in indigenous and military history in the early American republic will appreciate these important memoirs, along with Benn's helpful introductions and annotations.

Book Memories of the Enslaved

Download or read book Memories of the Enslaved written by Spencer R. Crew and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a first-person perspective on the institution of slavery in America, providing powerful, engaging interviews from the WPA slave narrative collection that enable readers to gain a true sense of the experience of enslavement. Today's students understandably have a hard time imagining what life for slaves more than 150 years ago was like. The best way to communicate what slaves experienced is to hear their words directly. The material in this concise single-volume work illuminates the lives of the last living generation of enslaved people in the United States—former slaves who were interviewed about their experiences in the 1930s. Based on more than 2,000 interviews, the transcriptions of these priceless interviews offer primary sources that tell a diverse and powerful picture of life under slavery. The book explores seven key topics—childhood, marriage, women, work, emancipation, runaways, and family. Through the examination of these subject areas, the interviews reveal the harsh realities of being a slave, such as how slave women were at the complete mercy of the men who operated the places where they lived, how nearly every enslaved person suffered a beating at some point in their lives, how enslaved families commonly lost relatives through sale, and how enslaved children were taken from their parents to care for the children of slaveholders. The thematic organizational format allows readers to easily access numerous excerpts about a specific topic quickly and enables comparisons between individuals in different locations or with different slaveholders to identify the commonalities and unique characteristics within the system of slavery.
