Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glances Back Through Seventy Years, Vol. 1 of 2: Autobiographical and Other Reminiscences The public will be the best judges whether the author of the following pages was well or ill-advised by partial friends to pen these rambling reminiscences of an active, if not an exciting career, covering well-nigh three reigns. The chapters that form a contribution to the history of Pictorial journalism, and the recollections of Mr. Thackeray and a few other notable men, French as well as English, may possibly have a certain value, mixed up though they be with notices of men and things which the world, in its peremptory way, has made up its mind to forget. Yet readers, on the whole, may find the writer's reminder of such matters not uninteresting, and the volumes generally neither prosy nor dull. This is the utmost the writer pretends to claim for them, and in this spirit he commends the book to his brethren of the press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections After Fifty Years This album is my contribution to the semi-centennial celebration held this year. It was here that I launched out in business for myself and I owe much to the pioneers who helped me to find myself. Sometimes I wish that I had spent fifty years here instead of five. By remaining here I would have gathered less of material things and less of stress and heartbreak. Several hundred copies of this little work have been printed for free distribution and I trust that these pictures from a memory extending into the dim past may find a place among your cherished souvenirs. Download or read book Five for Freedom written by Eugene L. Meyer and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 16, 1859, John Brown and his band of eighteen raiders descended on Harpers Ferry. In an ill-fated attempt to incite a slave insurrection, they seized the federal arsenal, took hostages, and retreated to a fire engine house where they barricaded themselves until a contingent of US Marines battered their way in on October 18. The raiders were routed, and several were captured. Soon after, they were tried, convicted, and hanged. Among Brown's fighters were five African American men—John Copeland, Shields Green, Dangerfield Newby, Lewis Leary, and Osborne Perry Anderson—whose lives and deaths have long been overshadowed by their martyred leader and who, even today, are little remembered. Only Anderson survived, later publishing the lone insider account of the event that, most historians agree, was a catalyst to the catastrophic American Civil War that followed. Five for Freedom is the story of these five brave men, the circumstances in which they were born and raised, how they came together at this fateful time and place, and the legacies they left behind. It is an American story that continues to resonate.

Book Reminiscences Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 Material of such a character makes my duty in one respect an easy one. I have not to relate Mr. Carlyle's history, or describe his character. He is his own biographer, and paints his own portrait. But another difficulty arises from the extent of the resources thrown open to me. His own letters are as full of matter as the richest of his published works. His friends were not common men, and in writing to him they wrote their best. Of the many thousand letters in my possession, there is hardly one which, either on its special merits or through its connec tion with something which concerned him, does not deserve to be printed. Selection is indispensable; a middle way must be struck between too much and too little. I have been guided largely, however, by Carlyle's personal directions to me, and such a way will, I trust, be discovered.
