Book The Ordeal of a Diplomat Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ordeal of a Diplomat Classic Reprint written by C. NABOKOFF and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ordeal of a Diplomat I do not believe in the wisdom of writing several hundreds of pages of memoirs. Even great men, in my opinion, make a mistake in writing too much. Whatever interest at taches to these pages is due to the fact that unkind fate had placed me in a prominent position during the greatest crisis in history. The reader may accuse me of speaking too often in the first person. It is, however, the inherent feature of all personal recollections. Since the Bolsheviks have published the diplo matic correspondence of Russian representa tives, I do not consider it an indiscretion to reproduce some of these documents. I have also quoted a few letters and telegrams sent to Omsk from the Embassy. They are like wise but temporary secrets, and it is my firm belief that to withhold their publication is to deprive the public of the best means of forming a judgment on the activities of a diplomat. Book Recollections of a Foreign Minister Memoirs of Alexander Iswolsky Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of a Foreign Minister Memoirs of Alexander Iswolsky Classic Reprint written by Charles Louis Seeger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Foreign Minister (Memoirs of Alexander Iswolsky) This is but a fragment of the work that the author had planned, covering the period Of his activities as Minister Of Foreign Affairs (1906-1910) and Ambassador to France (1910 It was to consist of three volumes, the first treating Of the events following the granting Of a constitutional charter to Russia the second revealing many unpublished details Of the negotiations between Russia and Austria in relation to the annexation Of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ensuing formation Of the Triple Entente. The third was to deal with the Balkan Wars and finally the Great War and the causes which led to it. The year of illness and anxiety for the future Of his beloved country, preceding his death in August last, interfered with his literary work and prevented the completion of even the first volume. The consequent loss to history is difficult to estimate, but a careful reading Of these memoirs, as far as they go, will give some measure of what that loss means, for every page testifies to the honesty, exactitude and insight with which he records the important events and portrays the characters Of the men who figured in them, during the period covered by these few chapters. Book My Mission to Russia and Other Diplomatic Memories Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Mission to Russia and Other Diplomatic Memories Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by George Buchanan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Mission to Russia and Other Diplomatic Memories, Vol. 2 Meanwhile tlie Emperor at the beginning of February had parted with Goremykin and appointed Stiirmer President of the Council. Stiirmer's grand father had been Austrian Commissary at St. Helena during Napoleon's residence on that island, and he had himself successively held the posts Of Director of the Ceremonies at the Russian Court and of Governor of Jaroslav. With but a second-rate intelligence, without any experience of affairs, a sycophant, bent solely on the advancement of his own interests and extremely ambitious, he owed his new appointment to the fact that he was a friend of Rasputin and that he was backed by the Empress's camarilla. I shall have more to say about him later on, but I may mention, as showing the sort Of man that he was, that he chose as his chef de cabinet a former agent of the okhmna (secret police), Manouiloff by name, who was a few months afterwards arrested and tried for blackmailing a bank.
