Book Reclaiming Populism

Download or read book Reclaiming Populism written by Eric Protzer and published by Polity. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of populism is usually attributed by commentators to either income inequality or culture wars. We are witnessing, they argue, either the displaced anger of the 99% or the revenge of the ‘deplorables’ against the ‘liberal elite’. They are wrong. In this forensic book, Eric Protzer and Paul Summerville argue that populism is actually a response to a profound sense that many of the world’s leading economies are unfair. They show that in meritocratic countries, such as Australia, Canada, Portugal, and Japan, populism has not taken root. In contrast, the countries that have been hit by the worst populist upheavals - like the US, UK, France, and Italy – have low social mobility. The way to address populism is to restore the connection between contribution and reward and craft a politics that reclaims the reasonable grievances that drive populism while discarding its false diagnoses and toxic ‘solutions’. Reclaiming Populism is a must-read for policy-makers, scholars and citizens who want to understand the crises of our age and bring disenchanted populist voters back into the fold of liberal democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis of the neoliberal order has resuscitated a political idea widely believed to be consigned to the dustbin of history. Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and the neo-nationalist, anti-globalisation and anti-establishment backlash engulfing the West all involve a yearning for a relic of the past: national sovereignty. In response to these challenging times, economist William Mitchell and political theorist Thomas Fazi reconceptualise the nation state as a vehicle for progressive change. They show how despite the ravages of neoliberalism, the state still contains resources for democratic control of a nation's economy and finances. The populist turn provides an opening to develop an ambitious but feasible left political strategy.Reclaiming the State offers an urgent, provocative and prescient political analysis of our current predicament, and lays out a comprehensive strategy for revitalising progressive economics in the 21st century.

Book Reclaiming Public Ownership

Download or read book Reclaiming Public Ownership written by Professor Andrew Cumbers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** Winner of the Myrdal Prize for Evolutionary Political Economy *** The last few years have seen the spectacular failure of market fundamentalism in Europe and the US, with a seemingly never-ending spate of corporate scandals and financial crises. As the environmental limits and socially destructive tendencies of the current profit-driven economic model become daily more self-evident, there is a growing demand for a fairer economic alternative, as evidenced by the mounting campaigns against global finance and the politics of austerity. Reclaiming Public Ownership tackles these issues head on, going beyond traditional leftist arguments about the relative merits of free markets and central planning to present a radical new conception of public ownership, framed around economic democracy and public participation in economic decision-making. Cumbers argues that a reconstituted public ownership is central to the creation of a more just and sustainable society. This book is a timely reconsideration of a long-standing but essential topic.

Book Reclaiming Radical Ideas in Schools

Download or read book Reclaiming Radical Ideas in Schools written by Andrew Moffat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming Radical Ideas in Schools provides support for every primary school in the provision of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC), the teaching of British values and preparation for life in modern Britain. Providing practical and tried-and-tested strategies, this resource will help primary schools work together to create an inclusive environment that focuses on reducing radicalisation and radical ideas. It will support schools in creating an ethos for young children where their questions about the world are explored and answered without fear or discrimination. Moffat is the author of No Outsiders in Our School: Teaching the Equality Act in Primary Schools which provides teachers with a curriculum that promotes equality for all sections of the community. Using the ‘No Outsiders’ model as a foundation, this new book complements it by putting emphasis on engaging parent communities in the school ethos. The resource includes 13 lesson plans to deliver with children and their parents in school-based workshops, with homework activities to follow. Each lesson is based around a picture book and includes fun activities alongside discussion of issues on individual differences; including race, gender and sexuality. The resource also provides guidance on how to deliver assemblies that support the ‘No Outsiders’ ethos and how to approach discussing terrorism with children. This is an invaluable resource for anyone working in a primary school setting, as well as trainee teachers, ITT providers and educational advisors. The aim is to extend the successful ‘No Outsiders’ ethos beyond the school gates to the community to ensure that we are working together to develop a safe and cohesive British society.

  • Author : Barbara J. Keys Keys
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2014-02-17
  • ISBN : 0674726030

Download or read book Reclaiming American Virtue written by Barbara J. Keys Keys and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American commitment to promoting human rights abroad emerged in the 1970s as a surprising response to national trauma. In this provocative history, Barbara Keys situates this novel enthusiasm as a reaction to the profound challenge of the Vietnam War and its aftermath. Instead of looking inward for renewal, Americans on the right and the left looked outward for ways to restore America's moral leadership. Conservatives took up the language of Soviet dissidents to resuscitate the Cold War, while liberals sought to dissociate from brutally repressive allies like Chile and South Korea. When Jimmy Carter in 1977 made human rights a central tenet of American foreign policy, his administration struggled to reconcile these conflicting visions. Yet liberals and conservatives both saw human rights as a way of moving from guilt to pride. Less a critique of American power than a rehabilitation of it, human rights functioned for Americans as a sleight of hand that occluded from view much of America's recent past and confined the lessons of Vietnam to narrow parameters. From world's judge to world's policeman was a small step, and American intervention in the name of human rights would be a cause both liberals and conservatives could embrace.

Book A Sociolinguistics of Diaspora

Download or read book A Sociolinguistics of Diaspora written by Rosina Márquez Reiter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together scholars in sociolinguistics and the sociology of new media and mobile technologies who are working on different social and communicative aspects of the Latino diaspora. There is new interest in the ways in which migrants negotiate and renegotiate identities through their continued interactions with their own culture back home, in the host country, in similar diaspora elsewhere, and with the various "new" cultures of the receiving country. This collection focuses on two broad political and social contexts: the established Latino communities in urban settings in North America and newer Latin American communities in Europe and the Middle East. It explores the role of migration/diaspora in transforming linguistic practices, ideologies, and identities.

Book Love it or Loathe it

Download or read book Love it or Loathe it written by Mascha K. Brichta and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular newspapers like the British »The Sun« and the German »Bild« regularly invite controversy over their morals and methods, power and responsibility, political and social impact. At best, their reporting is rejected as trivial, vulgar and tasteless; at worst, it is deemed hazardous to the workings of democratic society. Yet, the papers are able to attract large audiences, and contribute significantly to the daily lives of millions of readers. This book looks at popular newspapers from an audience point of view. Examining the crucial relationship between news and entertainment, it provides timely empirical evidence for the values tabloids really have for readers and modern day Britain and Germany. Contradicting common myths and stereotypes, the book calls for fresh perspectives on the popular media and their audiences. With a foreword by Peter Dahlgren, Lund University, Sweden.
