Book Resonance and Reciprocity

Download or read book Resonance and Reciprocity written by Jason Maratos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers, published between 1976 and 2003, traces the innovative connections which the eminent group analyst Dennis Brown made between medicine and psychoanalysis. They reveal his important insights into how the principles of group analysis can improve our understanding of philosophy and ethics, and trace the development of trans-cultural dimensions of group analysis. Beginning with Dennis’ early work in dermatology, the first section of Resonance and Reciprocity provides a fascinating overview of the insights gained into psychosomatic conditions through the application of psychoanalysis and group analysis. The second section builds on the tenet of group analysis that therapy should change the therapist as well as the client, addressing the changes that can take place in the therapeutic milieu, both in client and provider. The chapter on drowsiness, a modern classic, provides a significant contribution to our understanding of the emotional and physical changes that the therapist experiences during analysis, and its wider implications for our appreciation of how changes in mental and physical states are affected by a person’s emotional world. The final section reveals how Dennis Brown extended his interest and his activities beyond the individual, the small and the large group, and studied groups within and across cultures. This book provides not only a solid understanding of complex analytical notions but also opens the road for future development. It will appeal to students and professionals in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and group psychotherapy.

Book The Adaptive Function Of Empathy The Role Of Rave Suppression In Social Cohesion A Case Study In Malta

Download or read book The Adaptive Function Of Empathy The Role Of Rave Suppression In Social Cohesion A Case Study In Malta written by Nahna James and published by Nahna James. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the adaptive function of empathy and the role of rave suppression in promoting social cohesion within contemporary Maltese society. The relevance of adaptive empathy as a dynamic, feedback-based learning process, whereby empathic responses are chosen and modified on the basis of social feedback is explored. Drawing from insights in neuroscience, psychology, and social science this work investigates the mechanisms grounding accurate empathy and implications for relationship formation and maintenance. This study employs an original associative learning paradigm to measure adaptive empathy where participants choose between two empathic strategies; reappraisal or distraction to alleviate target person’s distress. Feedbacks on each strategy’ effects are used to build future decisions that show mentalizing abilities are part of adaptive empathy. On this note, it is worth pointing out that there was a positive correlation between traits cognitive empathy in relation to those involved in adaptive empathy since learning through social feedback increases accuracy for being empathetic. Further, the study also touches on cultural and social perspectives of rave culture in Malta among other things. This is achieved by reviewing the effects of raves’ events and efforts to abolish them on social ties. The paper is based on mixed research design that uses qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys to examine how communal activities affect collective empathy and social cohesion. It explores how a sense of belonging and comradeship are developed through rave culture as well as what happens when it ceases to operate that may lead to some alterations in social dynamics and solidarity. The main goal of this research was to illuminate the adaptive roles played by empathy within certain societal situations and wider implications for societal integration; hence, it provides an extensive understanding regarding relationships between empathy and social structure. These findings can be helpful to community leaders or policy makers who would want to foster resilience & harmony among different groups within modern societies.

Book The Contested Role of Education in Conflict and Fragility

Download or read book The Contested Role of Education in Conflict and Fragility written by Zehavit Gross and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book brings together new thinking on education’s complex and evolving role in conflict and fragility. The changing nature of conflict, from inter- to intra-state, and with shifting geopolitical power balances, demands a reconceptualization of where education is positioned. Claims that education on its own can be an agent of conflict transformation are disputed. Deliberate attempts at peace education are not without critics and controversies. This collection aims to generate new realism from empirical and reflective accounts in a variety of countries and political contexts, as well as provide innovative methodological approaches to the study of education and conflict. The particular distinctiveness of the volume is the emphasis on ‘contested’ – it includes the debates and disagreements on the many faces of education in conflict, as well as material on teaching controversial issues in fragile contexts. Crucially, it underscores how education itself exists within highly contested projects of state, nation and region building. As well as overview comparative chapters, the collection encompasses a range of specific contexts, geographically and educationally – Algeria, Canada, El Salvador, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Tunisia, UK and US, with settings that include schools, higher education and refugee camps. Focuses range from analyses of education in historical conflicts to contemporary issues such as post Arab Spring transformations. Perennial concerns about religion, colonialism, protest, integration, cohesion, emergencies, globalization and narrative are given new slants. Yet in spite of the debates, a cross-cutting consensus emerges as the crucial need for critical pedagogy and critical theory if education is to make any mark at all on conflict and fragility. "
