Book The Mathematical Writings of variste Galois

Download or read book The Mathematical Writings of variste Galois written by Évariste Galois and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2011 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before he died at the age of twenty, shot in a mysterious early-morning duel at the end of May 1832, Evariste Galois created mathematics that changed the direction of algebra. This book contains English translations of almost all the Galois material. The translations are presented alongside a new transcription of the original French and are enhanced by three levels of commentary. An introduction explains the context of Galois' work, the various publications in which it appears, and the vagaries of his manuscripts. Then there is a chapter in which the five mathematical articles published in his lifetime are reprinted. After that come the testamentary letter and the first memoir (in which Galois expounded on the ideas that led to Galois Theory), which are the most famous of the manuscripts. These are followed by the second memoir and other lesser known manuscripts. This book makes available to a wide mathematical and historical readership some of the most exciting mathematics of the first half of the nineteenth century, presented in its original form. The primary aim is to establish a text of what Galois wrote. The details of what he did, the proper evidence of his genius, deserve to be well understood and appreciated by mathematicians as well as historians of mathematics.

Book Introduction to Analytic and Probabilistic Number Theory

Download or read book Introduction to Analytic and Probabilistic Number Theory written by G. Tenenbaum and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a self-contained introduction to analytic methods in number theory, assuming on the part of the reader only what is typically learned in a standard undergraduate degree course. It offers to students and those beginning research a systematic and consistent account of the subject but will also be a convenient resource and reference for more experienced mathematicians. These aspects are aided by the inclusion at the end of each chapter a section of bibliographic notes and detailed exercises.

Book The Distribution of Prime Numbers

Download or read book The Distribution of Prime Numbers written by Albert Edward Ingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-09-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1934, this volume presents the theory of the distribution of the prime numbers in the series of natural numbers. Despite being long out of print, it remains unsurpassed as an introduction to the field.

Book The Shaping of Arithmetic after C F Gauss s Disquisitiones Arithmeticae

Download or read book The Shaping of Arithmetic after C F Gauss s Disquisitiones Arithmeticae written by Catherine Goldstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-02-03 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication, C.F. Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (1801) has acquired an almost mythical reputation, standing as an ideal of exposition in notation, problems and methods; as a model of organisation and theory building; and as a source of mathematical inspiration. Eighteen authors - mathematicians, historians, philosophers - have collaborated in this volume to assess the impact of the Disquisitiones, in the two centuries since its publication.

Book Introduction to Analytic Number Theory

Download or read book Introduction to Analytic Number Theory written by Tom M. Apostol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the first volume of a two-volume textbook for undergraduates and is indeed the crystallization of a course offered by the author at the California Institute of Technology to undergraduates without any previous knowledge of number theory. For this reason, the book starts with the most elementary properties of the natural integers. Nevertheless, the text succeeds in presenting an enormous amount of material in little more than 300 pages."-—MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

Book Asymptopia

  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Asymptopia written by Joel Spencer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymptotics in one form or another are part of the landscape for every mathematician. The objective of this book is to present the ideas of how to approach asymptotic problems that arise in discrete mathematics, analysis of algorithms, and number theory. A broad range of topics is covered, including distribution of prime integers, Erdős Magic, random graphs, Ramsey numbers, and asymptotic geometry. The author is a disciple of Paul Erdős, who taught him about Asymptopia. Primes less than , graphs with vertices, random walks of steps--Erdős was fascinated by the limiting behavior as the variables approached, but never reached, infinity. Asymptotics is very much an art. The various functions , , , , all have distinct personalities. Erdős knew these functions as personal friends. It is the author's hope that these insights may be passed on, that the reader may similarly feel which function has the right temperament for a given task. This book is aimed at strong undergraduates, though it is also suitable for particularly good high school students or for graduates wanting to learn some basic techniques. Asymptopia is a beautiful world. Enjoy!

Book Tauberian Theory

  • Author : Jacob Korevaar
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 3662102250
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Tauberian Theory written by Jacob Korevaar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tauberian theory compares summability methods for series and integrals, helps to decide when there is convergence, and provides asymptotic and remainder estimates. The author shows the development of the theory from the beginning and his expert commentary evokes the excitement surrounding the early results. He shows the fascination of the difficult Hardy-Littlewood theorems and of an unexpected simple proof, and extolls Wiener's breakthrough based on Fourier theory. There are the spectacular "high-indices" theorems and Karamata's "regular variation", which permeates probability theory. The author presents Gelfand's elegant algebraic treatment of Wiener theory and his own distributional approach. There is also a new unified theory for Borel and "circle" methods. The text describes many Tauberian ways to the prime number theorem. A large bibliography and a substantial index round out the book.

Book Geometry of Polynomials

  • Author : Morris Marden
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 1949-12-31
  • ISBN : 0821815032
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Geometry of Polynomials written by Morris Marden and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1949-12-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years since the first edition of this well-known monograph appeared, the subject (the geometry of the zeros of a complex polynomial) has continued to display the same outstanding vitality as it did in the first 150 years of its history, beginning with the contributions of Cauchy and Gauss. Thus, the number of entries in the bibliography of this edition had to be increased from about 300 to about 600 and the book enlarged by one third. It now includes a more extensive treatment of Hurwitz polynomials and other topics. The new material on infrapolynomials, abstract polynomials, and matrix methods is of particular interest.
