Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 5

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 5 written by Dorairaj Prabhakaran and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

The editors have brought together a talented group of international stroke researchers and clinicians to contribute to this volume, which is written for students, researchers and physicians in biotechnology, neurosciences, neurology, neuroradiology and neurosurgery. Throughout the world, stroke is still a leading cause of mortality and morbidity; there are 152,000 strokes in the United Kingdom, 62,000 in Canada, and approximately 15 million people worldwide. Large communities of stroke survivors are eagerly awaiting scientific advances in translational stroke research related to regeneration and recovery of function that would offer new therapeutics for rehabilitation and regeneration utilizing novel stem cell and molecular-based approaches. This volume will allow the reader to undersnd the future of stroke treatment from its inception in the laboratory through to clinical trial design. The reader will learn about the recent advances made in these areas related to basic and applied stroke research and their translational potential. Dr. Paul A. Lapchak is Professor of Neurology and Director of Translational Research in the Departments of Neurology & Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles CA, USA. Dr. Lapchak is an internationally recognized expert conducting translational drug development research for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Dr. John H. Book Stroke Genetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hugh S. Markus
  • Publisher : Oxford Medical Publications
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0198515863
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book Stroke Genetics written by Hugh S. Markus and published by Oxford Medical Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is a major cause of death and the major cause of adult neurological disability in most of the world. Despite its importance on a population basis, research into the genetics of stroke has lagged behind that of many other disorders. However, the situation is now changing. Anincreasing number of single gene disorders causing stroke are being described, and there is growing evidence that polygenic factors are important in the risk of apparently "sporadic" stroke.Stroke Genetics provides an up-to-date review of the area, suitable for clinicians treating stroke patients, and both clinical and non-clinical researchers in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The full range of monogenic stroke disorders causing cerebrovascular disease, including ischaemicstroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, are covered. For each, clinical features, diagnosis, and genetics are described. Increasing evidence suggest that genetic factors are also important for the much more common multifactorial stroke; this evidence isreviewed along with the results of genetic studies in this area. Optimal and novel strategies for investigating multifactorial stroke, including the use of intermediate phenotypes such as intima-media thickness and MRI detected small vessel disease are reviewed. The book concludes by describing apractical approach to investigating patients with stroke for underlying genetic disorders. Also included is a list of useful websites.

Book New Trends in Diagnosis and Management of Stroke

Download or read book New Trends in Diagnosis and Management of Stroke written by Klaus Poeck and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It might appear bold to publish the proceedings of yet another sym posium on the diagnosis and management of stroke. However, I hope in selecting topics to reflect 'new trends' and in inviting speakers to discuss these trends and the related concepts and results, that we have been suc cessful in attaining a high level of scholarship as well as in appealing to a wide readership. The central issues here derive from a new typology of strokes that should replace the obsolete distinction based on purely temporal param eters so aptly criticized by Caplan. A classification of strokes on the basis of pathogenesis requires a synopsis of information gained from history, neurological and cardiovascular findings, ultrasound studies (ex tracranial as well as transcranial), correctly timed CT scan investigation and, if necessary, from selective angiography. Only the recognition of the role of pathogenetic events for a patient permits the application of a ra tional therapy regimen.

Book Neuroprotective Therapy for Stroke and Ischemic Disease

Download or read book Neuroprotective Therapy for Stroke and Ischemic Disease written by Paul A. Lapchak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical and comprehensive look at current state-of-the-art scientific and translational research being conducted internationally, in academia and industry, to address new ways to provide effective treatment to victims of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and other ischemic diseases. Book New Developments in Stroke Research

Download or read book New Developments in Stroke Research written by Garret D. Ruper and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the part of the brain is suddenly interrupted (ischemic) or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into the spaces surrounding the brain cells (haemorrhagic). Generally, there are three treatment stages for stroke: prevention, therapy immediately after stroke, and post-stroke rehabilitation. Therapies to prevent stroke are based on treating an individual's underlying risk factors. This book includes within its scope the prevention, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of stroke. Leading-edge scientific research from throughout the world is presented.
