Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of ancient marine environments is an important task of the Earth Sciences, of great interest to geology, pure and applied, to oceanography and climatology, as well as to such fields as ecology and evolution. In principle, such reconstructions are based on the actualistic approach of "the present is the key to the past." Since the deciphering of past environmental changes, either nat ural or man-made, has considerable bearing on planning, the past may provide a key to the future. Paleoenvironmental interpretations in the marine realm are based to a great extent on assemblages of fossils recovered from ancient sediments in outcrops and from land-based or submarine drillings. Observable lateral sequences of assemblages in contemporaneous strata, the known or assumed functional or adaptive significance of preserved skeletal struc tures, as well as their evolution through time and space, provide by themselves indications of ancient environmental settings. In some cases even present-day eco logical considerations may be derived from analysis of fossils.

Book Palynology and Human Ecology of Africa

Download or read book Palynology and Human Ecology of Africa written by Orijemie, Emuobosa Akpor and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa's environmental history and the complex interactions between humans and their environment remain poorly understood, creating a significant knowledge gap in this crucial field of study. Despite Africa's vital role in human evolution, biodiversity, and agricultural expansion, the long-term impact of environmental changes on African landscapes, vegetation communities, and human cultures lacks comprehensive research. This knowledge gap hampers efforts to tackle urgent challenges like climate change, global food production, resource management, and evidence-based policy formulation. Palynology and Human Ecology of Africa, edited by Emuobosa Orijemie and Sylvester Obigba, fills this void by bringing together experts from various disciplines such as archaeology, anthropology, palaeoecology, and palynology. This groundbreaking book offers a practical and theoretical framework for understanding Africa's environmental history and the intricate relationships between humans and their environment. It serves as a compendium of knowledge, providing empirical findings and exploring the application of palynology and innovative technologies in studying human ecology in Africa. By shedding light on topics like environmental changes, vegetation dynamics, human culture, and technological innovations, the book equips readers with valuable insights into the dynamics of the environment and their impact on the people of Africa. It becomes an indispensable resource for students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of human ecology, palaeoecology, and palynology, offering essential tools to address pressing environmental challenges and formulate evidence-based policies. With its multidisciplinary approach and evidence-driven insights, this book paves the way for a sustainable future rooted in a profound understanding of human-environment interactions in Africa and beyond.

Download or read book Biomineralization written by Patricia M. Dove and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 54 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry focuses upon the various processes by which organisms direct the formation of minerals. Our framework of examining biominerals from the viewpoints of major mineralization strategies distinguishes this volume from most previous reviews. The review begins by introducing the reader to over-arching principles that are needed to investigate biomineralization phenomena and shows the current state of knowledge regarding the major approaches to mineralization that organisms have developed over the course of Earth history. By exploring the complexities that underlie the "synthesis" of biogenic materials, and therefore the basis for how compositions and structures of biominerals are mediated (or not), we believe this volume will be instrumental in propelling studies of biomineralization to a new level of research questions that are grounded in an understanding of the underlying biological phenomena.
