Book Canadian Economic History

Download or read book Canadian Economic History written by M.H. Watkins and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary methodologies include the "cliometric" style of historical analysis, econometrics, labour and regional study, and the changing parameters of government spending and public finance. The juxtaposition of classic theoretical statements with works by "outsiders" such as G.S. Kealey, B.D. Palmer, R.T. Naylor, R.E Ommer, among others, makes this a solid yet innovative record of the progress in economics over the last forty years. Canadian Economic History remains an essential classroom text.

Book Eli Heckscher International Trade and Economic History

Download or read book Eli Heckscher International Trade and Economic History written by Ronald Findlay and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The contributors first discuss Heckscher's efforts to forge the discipline of economic history by combining both the historian's careful evaluation of sources and the economist's rigorous models. The Heckscher-Ohlin theory of factor proportions is described and tested empirically. Contributors then apply the theory to historical material, including Mediterranean trade in Biblical times, the economic effects of two periods of plague eight centuries apart, and tariff policy in 35 countries from 1870 to 1938. Heckscher's masterly work on mercantilism, the Continental Blockade, and Swedish economic history is also described and appraised in light of recent historical research."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Agrarian History of Sweden

Download or read book The Agrarian History of Sweden written by Janken Myrdal and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive account in English of the agrarian history of Sweden from Neolithic times up to the present. It focuses on the men and women who cultivated the land, the technologies they developed and the way they farmed. What was produced and what quality of life did the farmers have? This book is written by the leading specialists in the field who have brought their profound knowledge and enthusiasm to the rich descriptions of crops, landscapes, animals, and farms in different regions and periods. With a chronological approach, the authors investigate the relationships and interactions between different groups in society: the bonds between landowners, peasants and labourers, the distribution of work and responsibilities between men and women, the livelihood of the Sami people, and the interdependence between agriculture and other industries in Sweden. The authors draw a wide range of international comparisons, and place the specifics of Swedish agriculture in an international context. The book is useful and inspiring reading for students, scholars, and indeed for anyone with an interest in Swedish history.

Book Peasants Into Farmers

Download or read book Peasants Into Farmers written by P. C. M. Hoppenbrouwers and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his first article in 1976 the American historian Robert P. Brenner has tried to come to terms with an issue first raised two centuries ago: how can we explain the differences in growth-patterns of North Western European countries in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. In a frontal attack on both the '(homeostatic) demographic' and 'commercialisation' models, Brenner traced the roots of the divergent evolutions back to rural and feudal 'social-property relations'. In the debate that immediately followed Brenner's first article, and in subsequent exchanges, the Low Countries were significantly neglected, although areas such as Flanders and Holland played a decisive role in the economic development of Europe. This was partly because of too few publications in international languages on the relevant Dutch rural history. This important book, edited by two of the most respected Dutch rural historians, and with contributions by several distinguished historians, seeks to fill this lacuna. It draws upon substantial research, and confronts the Brenner thesis with new results and hypotheses; and it contains a powerful and detailed response by Brenner himself.
